Today's Post Is Brought to You by the Letter....

Simon over at Stuck in a Book has thrown out a small challenge to fellow bloggers.  A chain-meme revolving around the letters of the alphabet.  Here's what Simon has to say:

Here's something that should be fun - and do get involved in the comment section! - I'm going to kick off a meme where we say our favourite book, author, song, film, and object beginning with a particular letter. And that letter will be randomly assigned to you by me, via random.org. If you'd like to join in, comment in the comment section and I'll tell you your letter! (And then, of course, the chain can keep going on your blog.)

He kicked things off with his post on the letter M.  And has now given me my letter

And here are my choices.

Favorite Book:
Bodies in a Bookshop by R. T. Campbell. At the time I first discovered this book, I'd never heard of R. T. Campbell and the Dover edition that the public library carried was new to me too. I'd never seen these slim reprints anywhere else. But how could I resist a mystery with a title like that? A mystery and a bookshop? I was sold even before I read the synopsis.

Favorite Author:

Oooh. This is difficult.  With "B" we've got Ray Bradbury, Julian Barnes, Josephine Bell, Nicholas Blake, Christianna Brand, Leo Bruce, and Octavia Butler...good writers all. But...if I must choose one, then I'm going to go with Ray Bradbury. Bradbury was one of my earliest loves in science fiction. I love Bradbury's use of language and his way of using SF situations to describe the emotions of now. Whether that "now" be when the stories were actually written or the now of 2014. He absolutely captures the human condition whether he's showing the future humans on Earth or humans on Mars or humans in space.

 Favorite Song:

"Best of My Love" by the Eagles (love me some Eagles music)

Favorite Film:

Another difficult one...hmmm.  Do I want to go comedy (Bringing Up Baby) or more serious (The Bridge on the River Kwai) or maybe a little Hitchcock (The Birds).  I'm feeling like a comedy today...so, let's say Bringing Up Baby. I love the mad, comic combination of Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant.

Favorite Object:

This one is so easy....I have to wonder whether this is a trick question.  My favorite object that starts with a B?  I wonder....

Books!  Books! Glorious books!  I know--way too easy.  And we've already done favorite book.  But I don't care.  Books are still my favorite.

But if I have to choose just one book to represent them all....then I'll go with this one,  Thomas Moore's Complete Poetical Works:

It was published in 1895, so it's really old, and it's got this interesting, puffy, off-white cover that just called my name every time I stepped into the used bookstore. When I finally got my hands on it, I didn't really go through it page-by-page but I I did try to read it. Well, let's just say it's flowery, 19th-C poetry at its best (or worst, depending on your point of view) and I never made it past about 20 pages or so. Not the all-time best book as far as content. But one of my closest friends gave it to me and....it led to my very own Believe It or Not Moment two years ago (click for my post on the subject).

Now...if you'd like to play along, just comment below and I'll give you a letter through a random letter generator....Or feel free to go visit Simon and have him give you a letter (visit him anyway!).

I'm From. An Autobiography

into her book by Rick Beerhorst
I'm from good old fashioned Midwestern roots which means I'm a mixed bag.  I'm from Sweden and England and France and few odd bits that we're not sure about.  (But I'm also from not being Swedish enough [according to the hubby's side of the family] because I don't like pickled herring.) I'm from a down-to-earth upbringing--of do unto others and mean what you say.  I'm from a promise is a promise and you make it right when it's not.  I'm from family comes first and loyalty means something.  I'm from respect your elders and love your friends and being there for each other.  I'm from working hard for what you want and working to be the best.  I'm from competitive stock--from competing with my dad at board games to keeping up with the boys to wanting to be the best academically.  I'm from hating to lose and hating to give up--but knowing when I have and I have to and being a good loser.  I'm from owning my mistakes and doing my best to learn from them.  I'm from having no regrets--except for the things I haven't done.

I'm from family camping caravans--trips to Mackinac Island and South Dakota and wading in the headwaters of the Mississippi with Aunt Mable in her pantyhose. I'm from celebrating my 10th birthday at a campground in North Dakota where it was so windy that the pancake syruped plates in the morning were slapping us in the face and the candles on my cake in the evening wouldn't stay lit long enough for me to blow them out.   I'm from making it a point to camp at every state park in Indiana.  I'm from plastic patio lights hanging from the camper canopies and playing card games by their glow.  I'm from learning to do my first word puzzles from my second cousins underneath those canopies.  I'm from fishing for blue gill with my parents and grandparents and great-uncles.  I'm from roasting hotdogs over the campfire and sneaking bites to Blackie, Uncle Joe's dog.  I'm from having the best little pies ever--made with bread and ready-made pie filling in a special pie maker for over the fire. I'm from wrangling with my cousins over who got to walk Muff, Uncle Gene's Lhasa Apso, and who got to be partners with Uncle Gene for playing jarts.  And I'm from worshipping those same cousins--because I had no brothers and I thought they walked on water.

I'm from family get-togethers at my grandma's.  Sitting with the grownups discussing everything from politics to football to what Grandma heard at the hairdresser's last Saturday.  I'm from sitting around Grandma's tables (yes, plural) with about 10-15 of us at meal-time, eating Grandma's meatloaf and shellie beans with Boston cream pie or cherry delight for dessert.  And later sitting around those same tables playing bid euchre and watching my cousin Kevin get mad because he "shot the moon" and then couldn't make all of his tricks.  I'm from sitting around the smaller of those tables with Tim & Kevin, playing everything from tiddly-winks to bingo to Chinese checkers to Scooby-Doo Mystery Game and drinking Choc-ola and eating vanilla wafers.  I'm from sitting at that table at other times and helping Grandma cut out the homemade dumpling or noodles that she made so well.  And, then again, sitting up on that table while Grandma gave me my very first permanent.

I'm from parents who love me and support me no matter what.  Parents who believed I could do anything I wanted--and who made me believe it too and taught me that it never mattered that I was a girl.  I'm from climbing trees and playing with army men and Tonka dump trucks.  I'm from playing tackle football with the boys and getting angry when they thought we'd have to play flag football because I was girl.  I'm from never crying like they thought I would.  I'm from freeze tag and dodge ball and "ghosts in the graveyard."  I'm from catching lightning bugs in the cool June evenings.   I'm from Brownies and Girl Scouts and earning every badge offered in the early 80s but one.  I'm from softball and volleyball and basketball teams in elementary school and never playing organized sports again until the English Department's co-rec team over the last 5 1/2 years.

I'm from being a "Daddy's girl."  Not the over-protected, wrapped in cotton wool kind.  But the gotta be out doing what Dad's doing kind.  Digging post holes for the new fence? Let me at it.  Ice skating and sledding and even shoveling the driveway.  I'm right there.  I'm from shooting hoops and playing "horse."  I'm from trimming the trees and mowing the lawn.  I'm from let me build the fire and show me how to pitch a tent and "what are you building, Dad--can I help?"  But I'm also from being a Daddy's girl in taking after him--too much.  We're from a long line of stubborn on my dad's side of the family.  The Bunches are full of it.  And for the longest time, I was the only one in the line-up not too stubborn to admit I was stubborn.

I'm from Star Trek and Saturday morning cartoons--from the Bugs Bunny/Roadrunner hour to my favorite Scooby Doo.  I'm from watching all the good old television shows and movies on Saturday and Sundays--The Lone Ranger and The Cisco Kid; The Bowery Boys and Abbott and Costello; Shirley Temple and the Little Rascals; and Zorro and Superman (the old black & white version).  I'm from watching every western and war movie that John Wayne ever made to every comedy made by Martin & Lewis to every "Road to..." movie made by Crosby and Hope.  I'm from watching Rich Little do his impressions and the Bob Hope Specials and the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts.  I'm from everything from the Carol Burnett Show to the Muppet Show and Emergency! to Adam 12.

I'm from Oldies music.  I may have grown up in the 80s, but I'm from the Beatles and the Beach Boys; the Temptations and the Supremes. I'm from 70s music playing in Dad's old red Nova and lying on the red, black, and white checkered back seat listening to "Jukebox Saturday Morning" on WOWO out of Ft. Wayne.  I'm from "Blinded by the Light" playing on the car radio while Dad set up the camper in the dark at Chain-o-Lakes State Park.  But as I've grown, I'm also from Southern Gospel Music and Celtic harp and blues and jazz and big band and classical with a bit of (selective) country thrown in for flavor.  I'm from watching Hee Haw to the Barbara Mandrell Show to the Donny & Marie Show to the Andy Williams Christmas Specials every year. And speaking of specials...I'm from the Charlie Brown specials.  I'm from "It's the Great Pumpkin...." to "It's the Easter Beagle" to "It's a Charlie Brown Christmas." The holidays just never would have been the same without the Peanuts gang.

I'm from spending the weekend at Grandma's.  I'm from riding with my great-grandpa in the early years--going to Osco to pick up the "funny papers" and riding with my Grandpa Ingols later on.  Doing the rounds with him to pick up prescriptions and the Sunday paper and stopping by the gas station so the owner could give me a candy bar.  I'm from Grandma making the perfect fried eggs and bacon with thin toast so crispy and buttered just right.  I'm from Grandma defending all her grandkids' behavior with "They're just going through a stage."  I'm from trips in Grandma's Gremlin (yes, that really was a car) to "Kmark" to pick up film for her "camry"--and, boy, could she get "infused" about that.  I'm from going to Dennison's (local market) with the first-ever kid-size grocery carts and being given miniature hot dogs to eat straight from the deli.  I'm from Grandma always putting family first and making sure her grandkids had what they needed.  I'm from loving Grandma for realizing that her granddaughter didn't want all those dollbabies for Christmas and buying my Tonka semi-truck.  And I'm from Grandpa never talking much, but with a sense of humor that could stun you when he chose to use it.

And you know I'm from books.  I'm from Where's the Bunny? (Aunt Helen and my earliest remembered book) and Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?  I'm from Mom's set of Nancy Drew books and The Four-Story Mistake and Ghosts Who Went to School. I'm from the Hardy Boys and Trixie Belden and all those collections of Hitchcock-chosen mystery short stories.  I'm from Sherlock Holmes and Edgar Allan Poe and Little Women and Gone With the Wind.  I'm from Emily Dickinson, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Rainer Maria Rilke.  I'm from Star Trek novels and Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Robert Silverberg, Harlan Ellison, Ursula K LeGuin, and James Tiptree, Jr.  I'm an eclectic mix of everything from mystery to science fiction to classic lit to historical fiction and biography.  I'm from the idea that "the girl's got to read" and there's no better place to spend your time and your money than a good used bookstore.

I'm from walking downtown on a weekly (or more often) basis--to visit the Wabash Carnegie Library and Mason's Rare & Used Bookstore.  I'm from cheerfully handing over my library card and/or my hard-earned allowance for the privilege of taking home all the books I could carry from each place.  I'm from losing myself for hours just browsing the shelves.  From sitting blissfully in Mason's, plopped down on the floor and propped up against the books, just checking to see what treasures I could find hidden on the shelves this week. I'm from going there with my friend Nikki and talking about how, if we had the money, we'd by the place from Mr. Mason.  I'm from thinking the best gift for most of my friends is a good book.

I'm from friends.  I'm from my first friend Nate--who I met when his mom was taking him to the park and my mom was taking me to the park.  And we were four years old.  And if you ever meet him and he tells the story, be warned: we get younger every time he tells it.  But that's one of the reasons I love him. I'm from friendly competition from him all through school. I'm from my first best friend Mistie who was every bit as much the tom-boy as I and more.  I'm from sleepovers at Mistie's and the slip and slide down her hill and heading over to Charley Creek to wade and look for crawdads.  I'm from my best, best friend Paula.  I'm from hating each other on sight and being sure that each was "too stuck up for" the other to finding the sister of my heart.  I'm from playing at being twins and being archeologists to bike riding across town to see each other to enduring separation and heartache and being reunited again.  I'm from it doesn't matter how far apart we are now and how little we see each other we're still t'hy'la and we know what that means.  I'm from my friend Nikki.  I'm from being so very alike in so many ways and so very different in so many others and it not mattering one bit--we'll always be friends.  I'm from sharing those experiences in high school College-bound English and trying to outdo each other on what ridiculous metaphor we could find in The Old Man and the Sea (and will Ms. Troop write that one on the board?).  I'm from doing Siddhartha together and making up that awesome poem. And, more recently, I'm from Richard who tells it like it is.  I'm from support when I was crumbling and straight, unpleasant truths; from shaking it up when it needed shaking and making me face things I'd rather not have faced.  I'm from "going off the cliff like Wile E Coyote" and being willing to take risks in the name of friendship.

I'm from being who you are...whatever that means...and accepting it.  And accepting others.  I'm from accepting the diversity that is so evidently part of the plan of life here on earth.  From getting over our petty little preconceived notions and prejudices and realizing how much good there is in all of us.  I'm from getting to the ideal of Star Trek--appreciating the "Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations."  I'm from working on being the best me and expecting the best of others and looking for it....and realizing that I'm not going to be perfect at that yet and I shouldn't expect others to be perfect either.  I'm still working on that...but let's all keep trying.  Shall we?

The idea for me to do this post came from Adam over at Roof Beam Reader who got the idea from Jillian’s “I’m From” over at A Room of One’s Own.  As Adam tell us: Jillian explains where she found it, and where the person from whom she found it, found it, etc. It's a nice little "Who I Am" post that I'd like to help keep going.  Let me know if you do it too.  I'd like to know a little bit more about where you're from.....

Tag! I'm It...Again

Earlier this month, I was swatted in a Blogger's Game of Tag. Today, I was Tagged by Freda at Freda's Voice. If you don't know Freda, then please pop over and check her blog out. It's one of my favorites! And now to the tagging nitty-gritty....

THE RULES

- You must post the rules.
- Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post and then create eleven new questions to ask the people you’ve tagged.
- Tag eleven people and link to them on your post.
- Let them know you’ve tagged them!

QUESTIONS (from Freda)

1. What was the last book that made you tear up/cry? Laugh out loud?
That Day in September by Artie Van Why Didn't quite have me in tears, but a very touching book about Van Why's experiences on and after 9/11.
Loose Cannons: Devastating Dish from the World's Wildest Women by Autumn Stephens. Very funny quotes from some very vocal women.

2. What new book are you most excited to read this year?
Titanic 2012 by Bill Walker. It's a mystery. About the Titanic! And it has an academic flair--a Harvard reunion! How could I not be excited?

3. If you could spend the evening with one author, living or dead, who would it be?
Dorothy L Sayers. I'd want to talk to her about mysteries and then when we got tired of that we could discuss her religious works. And anything else that came to mind.

4. If you could be reincarnated as one of your favorite characters, who would it be and why?
I'm not entirely sure that I'd want to be reincarnated as a character. But, if I must choose....then Phryne Fisher, Kerry Greenwood's grown-up Nancy Drew. Phryne is smart and witty and self-sufficient. She has enough money to do as she pleases, but she doesn't abuse her position.
5. If you could pick an author to write the story of your life, who would you choose?

Um. I dunno. How about Kerry Greenwood? Especially if she can make my life sound half as exciting as Phryne's. :-)

6. What’s your favorite cook book?

The one that has the recipe I want in it. (I don't really have a favorite.)
7. Edward vs. Jace. Who wins that fight?
I have no idea who Jace is. I'm assuming that Edward is from Twilight. Regardless, I don't know and I can't say that bothers me much.
8. Dumbledore vs. Gandalf. Who wins that fight?
Again, I'm sorry, but I don't particularly care. I've only read one Harry Potter book and I haven't read any of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

9. What is your favorite book to movie adaptation?
That's a hard one. I have a few. But if I have to choose just one, then I'm going to go with Rebecca (1940). Alfred Hitchcock certainly knew what he was doing with suspense. The casting is perfect. Dame Judith Anderson is wonderful as the woman you love to hate, Mrs. Danvers. I love the old classics.

10. What book would you want to buy a special edition for?
That all depends on what you mean by "special edition." There are special editions that are movie-tie-ins, there are special editions that are illustrated or specially sized or bound. Or some other limited-edition thing. I'm not all that into those. NOW, if a special edition means a first edition copy of a Vintage Mystery (any Vintage Mystery, doesn't matter), then I'm all over that. And the WWII pocket sized editions of Vintage Mysteries? I absolutely love those.

11. What, if anything, do you snack on while you’re reading?
Depends...but I do love sunflower seeds and grapes.

Now to do some Tagging:Actually, I'm not going to tag anyone by name/blog. I tried that when I was tagged at the beginning of the month and that didn't seem to take off very well. SO....If you're reading this, then...TAG! You're It! Feel free to grab the questions below, answer them and let us know a bit more about yourself. I'd appreciate it if you'd post a comment letting me know and I'll be sure to stop by and check out your answers!

Here's my questions for those of you who accept the tagging challenge:
1. Favorite childhood book-related memory?
2. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go?
3. Best present you ever received?
4. A song that you could sing the lyrics to right NOW.
5. Who was your first friend? Are you still friends?
6. Do you collect anything? If so, what and what got you started?
7. What is the title of the book that is closest to you right now?
8. Are you a morning person or a night owl?
9. Do you live in the city, the suburbs or the country?
10. Have you ever met somebody famous? Who?
11. What would a perfect day be like for you?

TAG YOU'RE IT!

Tag! I'm It...

I've been tagged by GigiAnn over at Ann's Reading Corner.

All games have rules, so here are the rules for this game of tag:
THE RULES:
1. You must post the rules.
2. Post eleven fun facts about yourself on the blog post.
3. Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post, and then create eleven new questions to ask the people you've tagged.
4. Tag (eleven)--however, like GigiAnn, I tend to be a rule breaker, so I chose (Four) people-- and link them on your post.
5. Let them know you've tagged them!
On with the fun...

Eleven (Fun) Facts About Me:

1. I love snow. I hate other people driving in snow. Being an adult I have to put up with too much of the second part.
2. I am Classic Trek fan. I have dressed up as "Captain Bev" several times for Halloween. I own a phaser and a communicator and an Enterprise phone.
3. I have sung with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir--twice.
4. I have paddled through the Boundary Waters (between Minnesota & Canada) with the Boy Scouts.
5. When I was little, I loved to go to my Grandma's, sit around her kitchen table with my cousins, play Tiddly-winks and drink Choc-ola and eat vanilla wafers. Exciting times!
6. I wanted to be an Olympic figure skater when I was little. Unfortunately, I had two things against me....weak ankles and I cannot skate backwards for anything.
7. I have a life-long dream of visiting the British Isles. I've bookmarked a page that offers yearly mystery-lovers tours--now that would be perfect!
8. I have a black thumb. People should only give me plants they hate so I can kill them for them. I wonder how much I could make as a plant contract killer?
9. I don't watch cable TV at all (everything I watch is prerecorded). Gave it up years ago and don't miss it a bit. Don't ask me who got kicked off the island or who won the latest Dancing with the Stars. Haven't a clue.
10. Speaking of...Clue is my all-time favorite board game. Miss Scarlett. In the Library. With the Candlestick.
11. Have never broken a bone (knock on wood...), but did slash my foot open on the way to swimming lessons when I was about 7 (I have a nifty scar, I could show you)--see item one below about bare feet--it didn't cure me of the habit. Managed to talk my mom out of the doctor and stitches--we butterflied it up and I got out of swimming lessons for about two weeks (yea! I did not like swimming lessons--but I love to swim now).
Questions for Me from GigiAnn

1. What is your favorite footwear? Bare feet. I hate shoes. I would never wear them if I didn't have to (either for work or because of weather). If I actually have to choose footwear of some sort...then my "ballerina" style slippers. Almost as good as no shoes.

2. Describe one incident that shows your inner stubborn side. Um. I don't think I can choose just one. I'm stubborn from a long line of stubborn. My dad and my dad's mom (and all her brothers)...they're all stubborn. I'm the only one not too stubborn to admit that I'm stubborn.

3. What do you see when you really look at yourself in the face in the mirror? Someone who wonders how I got to be 40-ish already. Don't feel 40-ish. But--overall more comfortable with myself than I ever was when I was younger.

4. What is your favorite winter drink? Don't really have one. Guess I'll go for hot cocoa--but I don't really have it all that often.

5. When you take time for yourself what do you do? Read. Blog. Anybody surprised with those answers please raise your hands. Anybody? Anybody? I didn't think so. :-)

6. Is it easy for you to share your true self in your blog? Or are you more comfortable writing post about other people or events? What you see (read) is what you get. This IS the real me. Although, I suppose since I'm primarily a book-blogger you might say that I mostly blog about other people....

7. If you could choose to read or talk on the phone, which would you choose, and why? Read. Again, anybody surprised by this answer? I actually hate talking on the phone. Would rather talk to people in person. The only exception would be friends that I don't see often enough--then I can spend hours on the phone. I blame my hatred of the phone on my dad. He always made me make phone calls (either the responsible ones to take care of business or urging me to call friends to see about going out to play {he was worried about how much time I spent alone--reading}). I'm not saying it wasn't good for him to make me take responsibility...but I hate talking on the phone, especially to people I don't know.

8. Where was your profile picture taken? Um. In a campground. Somewhere. I'm thinking it's Brown County State Park here in Indiana, but I'm not 100% sure of that. {That's the pictures that show's up for most people. If you're seeing me dressed in a Captain Kirk shirt, then that was taken in my house.}

9. Who took your profile picture? If it's the campground picture, then probably my mom--she took most of the pictures when I was growing up. If it's the Captain Kirk picture, my husband.

10. Someone knocks on your window at 2:00 am, who do you want it to be? It better be the Publisher's Clearing House Prize Patrol to tell me I'm a winner (they're late because they got lost).

11. What items could you not go without during the day? Shower. Breakfast. Book. roughly in that order

Now, who should I tag? Hmmm? Let's go with:

Yvette at In So Many Words
srivalli at Valli's Book Den
Red at What Red Read
Jenners at Life...With Books
My Questions for the Tag-ees:

Meet Me on Monday (56)

Meet Me on Monday is a blogging meme hosted by Java at Never Growing Old. As she says: "Blogging is a funny thing...we tell our most intimate thoughts for all to read and yet most of the time I find myself wondering, "who is this person?" I know them...but yet I don't know them! I want to know who the person behind all those words is so I thought of a great way for all of us to "meet" each other!"

Every Sunday she will post four get to know you questions that we can copy and paste into our own Monday post and we can all learn a little more about each and every one of us. To play along click on her meme name and join up with the linky.

This Week's Questions:
1. Are you excited for the holidays or are you dreading them?

Closer to dreading than excited. The older I get the less excited I am. Putting up the decorations just seems like more and more work. And I love buying presents for those I care about...but it seems to get harder every year. Mom & Dad buy everything they need when they see they need it. And my son and husband are so specialized with what they want (games & audio/visual stuff) that it's hard to surprise them. And, then, there's the friend who decided we just shouldn't "do this present thing anymore." Takes a lot of the joy out of it.

2. Do you hit the snooze button or get right up?

Neither. I wake up to the radio. I lay there in a semi-doze and listen to a few songs until the news comes on. I listen to the news and weather and then get up. It's how I ease into the day.

3. Do you still have your tonsils?

Yep. I wanted them out when my cousins had theirs out (I was about 5 or 6). There were rumors of ice cream. The doctor said I didn't need them out. In fact, he was one of the old-fashioned types who believed that God gave you those parts for a reason and they weren't coming out unless it was absolutely necessary. Then when I was about 12, I had another bout of tonsillitis (I was prone to it) and he told me that if I had one more bout then the tonsils would come out. I told him I didn't want them out now. I didn't have any more tonsil problems for a good long while after that.

4. What was the last piece of candy that you ate?

Um. Not sure. It was at work on Friday and was either a plain Hersheys or a Dove dark chocolate. Or maybe an Almond Joy. I have all of those in a basket on my desk. Left-over fun sizes from Halloween.

5. Do you shop at thrift stores?

I have--and have found some great clothes. But I haven't done so lately.

Meet Me on Monday (54)

Meet Me on Monday is a blogging meme hosted by Java at Never Growing Old. As she says: "Blogging is a funny thing...we tell our most intimate thoughts for all to read and yet most of the time I find myself wondering, "who is this person?" I know them...but yet I don't know them! I want to know who the person behind all those words is so I thought of a great way for all of us to "meet" each other!"

Every Sunday she will post four get to know you questions that we can copy and paste into our own Monday post and we can all learn a little more about each and every one of us. To play along click on her meme name and join up with the linky.

Scene of the Blog

Back in August, Cathy at Kittling Books, did me the very great honor of asking me to to participate in her feature Scene of the Blog. Did I want to? Heck, yeah! I'm so excited to be included in the very elite roll of bloggers that you'll find featured at her place over the course of time. Thanks so much for showing off my humble spaces, Cathy!

And now, Gentle Readers, I'd love it if you hop on over to Kittling Books to check out my blogging spaces. While you're there, take a tour of Cathy's virtual space. She's got some pretty cool blogging things going on.

I'm a Classic Dame...

Your result for The Classic Dames Test ...

Katharine Hepburn

You scored 14% grit, 29% wit, 52% flair, and 19% class!
{Flair, I've got flair!}
Katharine Hepburn
You are the fabulously quirky and independent woman of character. You go your own way, follow your own drummer, take your own lead. You stand head and shoulders next to your partner, but you are perfectly willing and able to stand alone. Others might be more classically beautiful or conventionally woman-like, but you possess a more fundamental common sense and off-kilter charm, making interesting men fall at your feet. You can pick them up or leave them there as you see fit. You share the screen with the likes of Spencer Tracy and Cary Grant, thinking men who like strong women.

Tag! I'm It

I've been tagged by Yvette over at In So Many Words. It must because it's so nice and spring-like outside (finally, after the deluge of rain we've been getting--maybe I can give up thinking maybe I need to build an ark). That splendid sunshine must bring out the playful side of bloggers and get us all ready for a game of tag. Once I answer these questions (below), I get to tag three other bloggers. Watch out. You may be "It" next....
Questions, questions...
1) If you could go back in time and relive one moment, what would it be? There are so many good moments....only ONE? I'd like to go back to any of the nights I spent reading to Kyle. It was almost magical sitting down with my son and a book and just enjoying the time together.
2) If you could go back in time and change one thing, what would it be? The year 2007. And, no, I'm not going to tell you why.
3) What movie/TV character do you most resemble in personality? Absolutely no clue. Is there a voracious reader anywhere in a movie/TV show that I'd want to be like?
4) If you could push one person off a cliff and get away with it, who would it be? Can I use that handy time machine? Then Hitler--before he came to power. Hands-down. If I'm supposed to pick someone current. Then, like Yvette, I couldn't do it. Too much guilt.
5) Name one habit you would like to change in yourself. I'd like to be better at confrontations. Not more confrontational...just better at handling myself when they happen.
6) Describe yourself in one word. Reader. Yeah, I know that one's obvious. But that would have to be it.
7) Describe the person who named you in this meme in one word. Hyphenated words: terrific-and-well-spoken-blogger.
8) Why do you blog? Answer in one sentence. For personal pleasure--to keep a record of what I read and what I think about it.
Now that I've answered the questions I have to pick three bloggers to tag in return. Who will they be?
Birdie at Birdie's Nest
Sherrie at Just Books
Kavyen at Reading Between the Pages

Be A Star!

Cheryl over at CMash Loves to Read has recently started a new Sunday meme called Sunday's Shining Star. Cheryl is an absolutely lovely blogger whom I have been lucky enough to become virtual friends with over the course of my first year in blogging. And I don't just say that because she's decided to feature me as this week's shining star. Cheryl is a terrific lady with a wonderful sense of humor. She reads the books I'm too scared to read (all those thriller-type books). And she manages (with the help of Gina at Hott Books) to keep all of us Challenge Addicts in line.

So, hop on over to Cheryl's place and check out her beautiful blog. And while you're there...you just might read my little write-up too. 'Cause at least for today--I'm a star!

The Holiday Tag

Bookworm1858 has tagged everyone who reads her blog post in this little game of Holiday Tag. So, I'll do the same: If you are reading this, consider yourself tagged and fill it out! (Leave a link below if you want me to comment.)

1. When do you usually know and feel that it's finally the holidays?
Usually it's the weekend after Thanksgiving--when I get the tree and decorations up. I'm lagging this year. The tree went up late. Christmas cards got done late. And I'm still waiting for a full dose of Christmas spirit. Sat down and watched Patrick Stewart in The Christmas Carol tonight. That helped some...but needing more.

2. What do you want for Christmas this year?
Books! Books! And then some more books. That really doesn't change from year to year.

3. Do you go all out with decorations?
Not anymore. When my son was small, I put every single ornament we had on the tree. Lights blinking in all the windows. Clingy window decorations. The whole nine yards. This year I only put about a third of the ornaments on the tree (we seem to have about a million now), no lights in the windows, and we haven't done the clingy window things for a long time.

4. What are you doing Christmas eve?
Brad will probably be trying to convince me to open the presents....I'll be resisting his efforts.

5. What are you doing Christmas day?
I'm hoping to stay home. My mother-in-law, who I really do love, seems to think we need to be at her house multiple times. I'd prefer just to do the family gathering on Sunday the 26th, so I can have some down time at home.

5. It's Christmas time. What are you reading?
Christmas Stalkings, a collection of Christmas-themed mystery short stories collected by Charlotte MacLeod

6. Favorite movie to watch during the holidays?
White Christmas--that's what I need to do to get my spirit on, watch Danny & Bob dress up like dames and sing "Sisters"! I love that movie.

7. Favorite Christmas song?
"Good King Wenceslas" with "O Holy Night" as a close second.

8. Favorite holiday drink?
Can't say I have one.

9. How is your Christmas shopping going?

More than half done. It would be nice if all the packages that are "in the mail" according to the online stores would show up to be wrapped.

10. If you could spend Christmas day anywhere else, where would you spend it?
Um...nowhere else. I like spending it at home.

11. Any holiday traditions?
I have to hang my "Jingle Santa." He's a skinny little Santa Claus (about 12-15 inches long) with jingle bells hidden somewhere inside that I've had since I was about two. It's not Christmas if Jingle Santa is not hanging somewhere in the house.

12. Favorite thing about the Holidays?

Jesus. Christmas music. Family.

My Reader's Block Featured on The Mystery Bookshelf Blogger Interview

Thanks to Violette over at the The Mystery Bookshelf, I've now been featured in my very first blogger interview. I very much appreciate her thinking of me and taking the time to send me the questions and post them on her blog. If you have the time, head on over there...not just to read the interview (although it would be really cool if you did), but to check out her blog. She does a really nice job!

Meet Me On Monday

Meet Me On Monday is a blogging meme hosted by Never Growing Old, as she says: "Blogging is a funny thing...we tell our most intimate thoughts for all to read and yet most of the time I find myself sitting and wondering, "who is this person!?" I know them...but yet I don't know them! I want to know who the person is behind all those words so I thought of a great way for all of us to "meet" each other!

Every Sunday she will post five
get to know you questions that we can copy and paste into our own Monday post and we can all learn a little more about each and every one of us!!"

To play along click on her meme and join up with the linky.

Here are today's questions and my answers:

1. How many TV’s do you have in your home? Two. And I rarely use them. Everything I watch is pre-recorded, but there are so many other things I'd rather do. Like read. Or work on my own novel. Or scrapbook. Or read. Or listen to music. Or read...(you get the idea).

2. What is on your bedside table (nightstand)? Lamp. Clock/Radio/CD Player. Papers I need to take care of. TBR books--plus current read.

3. How many pair of shoes do you own? Without going to the closet to count? Hmmm. Possibly 12-15.

4. Can you change a flat tire? In theory, yes. My dad made me learn and demonstrate before I was allowed to drive on my own. In actuality...it's been so long since I used the skill, I don't know.

5. Do you prefer sweet treats or salty treats? Either and both...at the proper time. If I have to choose, then I lean towards sweet.
