Saturday Snapshot

West Metro Mommy Reads

Saturday Snapshot is hosted by West Metro Mommy Reads. To participate in Saturday Snapshot: post a photo that you (or a friend or family member) have taken then leave a direct link to your post in the Mister Linky below. Photos can be old or new, and be of any subject as long as they are clean and appropriate for all eyes to see. How much detail you give in the caption is entirely up to you. Please don’t post random photos that you find online.

As I mentioned on April 19 (last time I posted), I have been scanning pictures for a family heritage Facebook page. These are some of the finds in my mom and dad's collection of photos.

This is my Great-Grandma and Grandpa Bunch's wedding photo (circa 1912).

And an anniversary photo taken sometime in the 1960s.

I have been away from this meme for far too long. Long enough that I just discovered that Melinda had taken it on after Alyce. Hi, Melinda! It's nice to meet you!

I just recently started scanning in a lot of vintage pictures for our family heritage Facebook page. It seemed to me a good time to get back on the Saturday Snapshot bandwagon.

So, for my first entry of 2014, I'd like to share this picture of my Grandpa Ingols. April is his birth month and it seems appropriate to have him be the subject of the first photo shared. He passed away in 2011 at the age of 95. His birthday was April 28th and he's about 4 in this picture.

Saturday Snapshot & Secret Santa

Saturday Snapshot is a meme hosted by Alyce at At Home with Books. All she asks is that you don't just post random photos that you find online. (Click pictures for close-up).

This is the third year that I have participated in  The Broke and the Bookish Secret Santa--a lovely little gift exchange for the bookishly inclined.  Above you will see the goodies that Christina, my very own Secret Santa for 2012 sent my way this year.  Two books that have been on the wish list for a while and some wonderful chocolate snacks!  Thanks so much, Christina!

My Grandma Ingols with my dad, Phil, and his sister, Diana (1949-ish).  I'm not sure what my aunt has on her dress (or thinks she has on her dress).  Loving my dad's little hat, though.

Here's a blast from my past.  I've posted pictures before of my son as a Boy Scout.  Here is a picture of me and my Brownie Troop back in the late 70s.  I'm the shaggy-haired one second from the right in the back row.  And that's my mom as Scout Leader.

Brain stationed outside the public library.

Brain outside Trinity Episcopal Church .
From late-April to mid-October 2012, 22 large fiberglass brains have taken over the city of Bloomington and Indiana University's campus. The installations are part of the Brains Extravaganza, a project that brings city institutions together to promote "brain awareness, education, injury prevention, recovery, and the importance of movement on mental and physical health." This brain is stationed outside the public library.
My question when I first found out about this was: "But if there really is a zombie apocalypse...doesn't this kind of ensure that they'll hit Bloomington first?" Lol.

Here is a photo of my son, Troop 148's former Fire Master, with his apprentice.  It was taken on our last High Adventure trip with the troop--a canoeing and camping adventure in the Boundary Waters between Minnesota and Canada.  Although Kyle enjoyed many things about scouting, his favorite was fire-building.  It wasn't a REAL camp-out if there was no fire.  And a drenching rain would not stop him (sassafras will burn in a downpour...just ask him).

These beauties are tiger lilies that my mom gave me to plant in my garden about 10 years ago. This picture is from June 2009--unfortunately, due to the drought, there were no blooms this year.

I've been working all week on a tissue cover for my boss.  Her favorite colors are Orange (!), yellow, bright blues, and just about any other bright color you can name.  She's also a professor with an interest in drama....so, thus, the comedy/tragedy theme.

The bean in all its glory.

That's me with the camera.

Looking up at the bean from underneath.
Two weeks ago, I took a spur-of-the-moment trip to Chicago to get together with two college friends.  It was my first trip there since a sixth grade field trip that took us to the Field Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry.  One of the stops on this trip was to Millennium Park to take in a free concert.....and to get some cool reflective photos of the "bean" (aka the Cloud Gate sculpture).

These photos are from August of 2009.  A year when it actually rained enough to bring out the flowers.  My poor lilies got burned up this year...they valiantly tried to bloom, but just weren't up to the heat and dryness.

No, I don't want to look at the camera.

Yeah, I meant it.  No publicity shots today
Here are a few pictures that I got of a blue jay hiding in the green leaves of our maple tree.  This is back before everything got so dry and brown from lack of rain.  Hopefully, the rain today (and all weekend, please!) will green things back up again.

I missed two weeks worth of Saturday Snapshot due to vacation and recovery from same.  Those who follow the blog will know that the hubby and I took off on a road trip along the classic Route 66.  We followed it all the way to Stroud, Oklahoma and then turned around for home.  Here are a few highlights from the trip:

It was always a reassuring sight to see this sign...it meant we were still on target.

Garage area and a classic car at the Wagon Wheel Motel, a vintage Route 66 stop in Cuba, MO.  Holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously open motel on the Route.  We stayed there our first night out.

One of many murals throughout the town of Cuba.  Known as "Mural City."  This one depicts a scene from the Civil War.

Fairly new-built, classic-look Sinclair station (non-working) in Paris Springs, MO.  Lots of vintage cars and Route 66 memorabilia.

The oldest section of Route 66 that we traveled--pre-1937. Paved in 1922, but little of the asphalt remains.  This was the longest section of asphalt we saw--the rest was gravel on a concrete base.

Happy Burger, a cute little diner that's been on Route 66 for over 50 years.  Best tater tots ever!

In honor of Father's Day....a selection of pictures featuring my Dad.  I'm very blessed to still have Dad in my life.  In June of 1999, my dad had an on-the-job accident that resulted in severe head trauma.  He was a cable splicer for the local telephone company and fell from the ladder while working on cable lines.  We were given little hope for his survival, let alone recovery of any sort.  Thankfully, he came through much better than predicted.  Yes, there are challenges--some memory loss and aphasia (difficulty verbalizing exactly what he wants to say--particularly when upset or over-stimulated) among them--but I am very thankful that he's still here.

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there in the blogosphere!

Saturday Snapshots: Birds in December

For whatever reason, I seem to have the best luck with bird photos in December....when my parents come for a visit and we go for a walk on the trail near my house.  These were taken this past year and I was most proud of the cardinal pictures I took with my mom's camera.  Above is the best shot of the couple together.  And I was most surprised by the picture of the woodpecker--when I took it, I didn't think it was such a great shot (I had the camera on maximum zoom and he was just so far away).  But when Mom sent me the pictures I was pleased to see how he looks.  The Canadian geese were just strolling along with us over in the back yards of some homes along the trail.

Yesterday was my 21st Wedding Anniversary.  I've been angling for these blue orchids for quite a while now...ever since I first saw them on display at our local store.  Hubby earned bonus points for the anniversary by showing up with these lovely flowers.
