Cangames 2026 - Random Table Shots

Howdy folks,

As has been tradition for myself for sometime now, the past weekend was attendance at Cangames time! A great way to pass the long weekend, and this year was no exception, in fact I think the Con was even better this year. Not only did I build up the courage (and fight procrastination) to run a game, it was fully attended and then some...more on that in a later post.

This post is all about the 'random' table shots that I was able to grab...the games and tables that I was able to fit in between the schedule. It felt like there was an increase in games overall, and the miniature table top was no different in that respect. There were some classic, some that I wasn't familiar with, and some new favourites.

Hope you enjoy the pics.

Force on Force (FoF) has become somewhat of a classic staple at Cangames, and there ware folks who travel from abroad to make it just for the FoF. Chris ran another scenario this year, I wasn't able to get in on the game, but this one looks like a different setting compared to years past. Chris runs his FoF in 20mm scale and always has a very dynamic scenario for players.

Ed and Andrew came in from the Maritimes for the day and topped it off with running a 15mm Rapid Fire Ost Front scenario. I tried this one out last year, and really liked the ruleset. I think this scenario is a similar Soviet push against German defenses, but in this case was a little more dynamic with added defense in depth that challenged both players to maximize resources and priorities - do the Sov's get bogged down in mop up or push for the objective prioritizing the threat; do the Germans commit all at once or whittle the Sov's down.

Michael Ball and The Face of Battle was a staple in my 'early' years of attending Cangames, and while he had taken a break from the Con, last year he returned with version 2 of his ruleset. His table is always a treat to look at. I believe he runs his games at 20mm, and in this case we're looking at D-Day-esque adventures.

Last year, Duncan had run a Korean War scenario with B-29's getting bounced hard by North Korean Migs...it was an excellent scenario, and he brought it back this year. The table was pretty straight forward and lots of top gun excitement by everyone. This is the Mig Alley expansion to Blood Red Skies by Warlord Games. The models are great, and hey...who doesn't love a good air combat game?

Chris also ran a couple of serials of The Walking Dead in 28mm. Again, a very popular setting and a lot of fun was had by folks.

Brian always runs a game or two at the Con. This year he had a Pirates inspired game, not sure the ruleset, but the minis looked excellent.

Painting Update - more 02 Hundred

Howdy folks,

I hope all is well on your respective fronts. I will admit the past month or so has been very busy and hasn't given me the chance to post as much as I had initially planned to, hopefully next month will be kinder with that.

Anywho, as the title says, this is a quick update on my painting progress with my 02 Hundred Hours purchases that I made at this years CanGames. I have already finished all of the SAS figures from the starter box, here, and I thought I would keep up with the other Allied troops that I bought. For this post, I present for you, a blister pack that looks to be an assortment from Artizan Miniatures range of WW2 British and Commonwealth.

These have been packaged up for Grey for Now, but looking at Artizan's website, the blister I bought is sourced from SWW115 and SWW118. These are meant for the North Africa expansion and are SAS reinforcements and when I saw them, I figured what the hell...I'll get them, try out the game, and probably pull the trigger on expansions later.

While the starter box and Wargames Atlantic contributions are plastic, these SAS reinforcement figures are metal...so the detail is there, but not as crisp as the plastic sculpts, but they do have some good weightiness to them.

Anyhow, inspired by some Osprey pics and Rogue Heroes stills, I painted them up in what I guess is somewhat classic look...I did not flock the bases as I had originally intended. After I had painted up the bases and added some wash, I thought they were strong enough on their own.

I hope you enjoy the pics.

Cangames - Random Stuff

Howdy folks,

I hope your May is going as desired. As you can see by the title of today's post, it is/was that time of year again when folk collect to Ottawa for CanGames!! While I made sure to register in advance, I was not as diligent with my game registrations…so I had to play that one from the hip…but more on games played in another post.

I thought I would post a selection of pictures I took of some random tables and games happening around me…admittedly I missed a number of tables, but here goes nonetheless.

Chris’s Force on Force, 20mm,  US Army and Iraqi insurgents

The Walking Dead, 28mm

Star Wars Legion (?)…not sure if it was themed with different ruleset or not…forgot to ask.

Cangames standard…Rubberboots game and I think they used Silver Bayonet.

Mike’s SAGA Game

And Mike’s Dead Man’s Hand game…

Painting Update - The Walking Dead

Howdy folks,

Hopefully all is well on your end. Over the summer, I tried to make an effort to get back to some figures that had been on the bench for quite some time, and Mantic TWD figures are some that have been waiting a while. Now it has been a while since I’ve gotten in a game of TWD, but I do have a few boxes of figs still waiting to be painted.

The thing that I really like about these figs is that as I have continued to branch out and see other rulesets and game settings, it is handy to have a bunch of non-military or historical figures that can fit into several genres. So one of the side benefits of these figs is that I have this vision of doing a progressive campaign for Zona Alfa and these figs will work well as noobs to the Zone…so a bit more on that to follow in the medium term.

Anywho, the figures themselves are solid…they paint up quite nicely and have some great expressions. Looking at the TWD graphic novels, they definitely follow the novel over the series. Not much else to say on these fellas except, hope you enjoy the pics.

The way I figure it, these figs will be great as introductory newbies to the zone, I have some nice plans for the gent with the long rifle and lens. Will also work really well for some rando armed civilians in a modern setting.

Painting Update - Terrain

Howdy folks,

I hope all is well on your side of the dice. I thought that I would share a quick post with you to show off some quick terrain items that I completed way back a month or two...maybe even three. Nothing much too special with the pieces, I painted up some crates for pretty much any genre or setting. These were pretty simple, just some primer, white highlight (or skip to white prime), contrast paints, and then paint in the slats. I bought the 'boxes' from the Dollar Store or Dollorama...can't remember which, but a few bucks get you about 20 of these little darlings.

These 3 pieces are courtesy of my buddy Duncan, his wonderful resin printer, and some STLs that he downloaded...it think they're from Modiphius...anywho, I went with some classic retro colour on the appliances as you can see if you have ever played Fallout 4. The tool box just screamed, "any other colour than red"...which isn't easy, cause all I can seem to remember is every metal toolbox being red.

Anyhow, I hope you enjoy the quick shots. Have a good one.

North Star Yakuza

Howdy folks,

For those with short memories like mine, in lead up to CanGames this year I was going to run a Force on Force game. If you check out the test run post you’ll see that we were looking to run a cops n robbers type scenario.

I happened to stumble upon the Yakut pack from North Star Figures that they release as part of their A Fistfull of Kung-fu line. I’ve had these figs kicking around for some time and to be honest, I had forgotten about them for awhile. So this crew was an obvious choice to help fill out the criminal element for the scenario. So, I figure the least I can do is share some pics of these figs, and see where the year takes us with the scenario.

Have a good one.

The crew, boss man in the middle, sumo-muscle and young hoods to the right. On the left of the boss, 3 x hitmen…

The young hoods (I can’t remember what North Star called them, lol). I tried my hand at drawing out a organized crime/Yakuz-y type tattoo for the hood in the yellow jersey.

The boss and his sumo…This is literally the only picture of the two of them that didn’t suck hard…I tried hand painting a stylized dragon the scabbard of his sword, looks nice and colorful at least.

The hitters…I really ended up enjoying these figs, they came up pretty quick and were much more fun than I expected
