Roman infantry Complete

So as part of the plan for re-fighting Zama, I had needed to add two more legions to the four I already had. I've taken advantage of the Bank holiday weekend and good weather to get all of the infantry done. Here is the last batch off the production line. Hastati and Princeps for the 5th legion and the Princeps for the 6th legion. The figures are mainly forged in battle with a few from Essex mixed in. I even used a couple of spare figures for another champion.

I just need the two bases of cavalry done for a Midgard unit to complete the Romans. I also had an update on my order for the remaining Numidians, hopefully here shortly and I can crack on with them before I start on some Iberians.

Here are the two new legions minus their cavalry.

15mm Republican Romans

Picking up some inspiration from a couple of recent games of Midgard, I completed the two bases of Hastati for the 2nd allied legion. This brings me up to four legions, two Roman and two allied/Latin legions. Each Legion is made up of two bases each of Hastati, Princeps and Velites, a single base each of Triarii and Cavalry. The two allied/Latin legions each have an extra base of cavalry.

Converting these to Midgard, generates three units of cavalry, two units of Triarii, four units each of Hastati, Princeps and Velites.

2nd allied/Latin legion

I can strengthen these with some Italiote troops if I want to fight larger battles against the Carthaginians,

More Romans and Britons

I now find myself in the unusual position of just painting up extra figures for Infamy, Infamy. All of my core forces are now complete, but it seems a shame to waste the  left over figures.

First up is a group of Caesarian legionaries. This time I removed the helmet plumes and went for plain black shields. I can see future Roman civil war games as I have enough figures for another unit.

After I had converted my German slingers I had 4 figures left over on the sprue. The 2 armoured figures will see use as leaders for my Britons. I had realised that all my commanders so far were unarmoured and this needed rectifying. To further distinguish them, I used heads and cloaks from Victrix.

This now gives me 5 leaders and a champion. At least I can replace casualties amongst my leaders. Now I just need to complete 2 more deployment points for the Britons.

Iberian Cavalry and a completed army

Now that feels good to get a full force for Infamy, Infamy completed. First up is a unit of Iberian cavalry to complete one of the starter forces. These are plastic figures from Victrix. I ended up keeping the shields simple i.e. slightly romanized.

I was pleased to get these finished as I was starting to get a little stale painting ancients. Still at least the army is finished.

So far the force is as follows:-

  • 4 groups of legionaries
  • 2 groups of Caetrati
  • 1 group of tribal slingers
  • 1 group of Numidian javelinmen
  • 1 group of Gallic Noble cavalry
  • 1 group of Spanish cavalry
  • 1 group of Numidian cavalry
I also have a few different commanders to act as leaders for the whole force. Now just need lockdown to end to get a game.

Roman allies

The beauty of using a Caesarian Roman army is that you can use all sorts of native troops as allies / mercenaries. So I set to on naking some additions.

The first unit is some Spanish Caetrati. These will cover the role of light infantry. The figures are from Victrix with the addition of some LBMS shield transfers. Pleased I have another unit of these to paint up.

The second unit is some Gallic Noble heavy cavalry. I still need to add a commader for these. Again the figures are from Victrix, nice but the horses are very large compared to others in my collection. I also used LBMS transfers for the shields.

Pretty happy with how this army has turned out. I do still have a few extra Roman Infantry to paint up. I would like to get a better figure for my Centurian, possibly the Vorenus figure from Warlord.

The army so far

I can concentrate on getting my Ancient Britons ready for the table top.

Caesarian Roman Levy legionaries

With receiving the PDF version of Infamy, Infamy today; I needed to push on and get my Caesarian Romans up to fighting strength. So here they are, a second group of unarmoured/levy legionaries.  Like the first group these are from 1st Corps. I deliberatly kept the shields plain white and different from the first group.

And now side by side with the first group. I may expand these in the future to a second Caesarian force to fight Caesar vs Pompey.

In addition to these I have some Balearic slingers which just need there bases finished. There will also be a unit of Spanish Caetrati and some Gallic cavalry. I have ordered an extra sprue to put together a second unit of Caetrati.

Caesarian Romans

With my German force completed it was time to crack on and get my Romans finished. First up was a 4th group of Legionaries.  Again these are the Warlord plastics. Very servicable figures

Ive also added an Optio to support the Centurian and a Standard. The head for tbe Optio was taken from a Victrix Carthaginian veteran I had spare.

So this brings me up to 4 units of armoured legionaries. I now need to expand their support options. I do have some Numidian cavalry,  but quite fancy adding the Spanish to get a hold of some Caetrati.

But in the meantime the 1st of two units of unarmoured legionaries. These can either be Italians or recruits. The figures are from 1st Corps. Slightly smaller than the Warlord figures, but will be fine in their own units.

I even had a go at painting a design on the shields. I deliberately kept it basic.

Now the whole force together so far.

Just need to get the last of the Italians done. I do have enough figures for 2 more groups of legionaries if I fancy any Civil War actions, Caesar vs Pompey.

For the Glory of Rome

With the Germans just about finished, I needed to make some progress on my Romans. These are the 3rd group of Legionaries and a Centurion to lead them. They are all Warlord plastics.

I've now got a 4th group with an Optio on the painting table.  Then I can start on a couple of groups of unarmoured legionaries and some Numidian cavalry. I've also made an attempt at a basic German house, following the instructions on one of the TFLs videos. Hopefully get it finished tomorrow.
