Machinator248 Chimera Conversion Kit - Product Review

Time for the blogs very first product review, I hope you all like and if you have any thoughts or suggestions please let me know. Each Section is marked out of 10 and then the marks fiddled about to give an overall mark for the item and seller, hope its of use. Enjoy:

The Machinator248 Pegasus Chimera Conversion Kit

Product Name: Pegasus Chimera Conversion Kit
Production Company: Machinator248 (ebay seller)

Price: £15gbp (at time of purchase)

General Summary:
The Pegusus Chimera Conversion kit is as suggested by the name a converion kit for the standard Imperial Guard Chimera Tank, this kit allows you to convert you Chimara to have a smaller troop area and set back turret, as well as an option to use a hi-tech looking turret, combine with a Standard GW Chimera this gives your tanks a unique look on the battlefield.

Review

Purchasing and Delivery:
Purchasing of the item was somewhat unusual, this kit was origionally availible online but after the usual shanninigans with non GW kits the only place to obtain this kit is via direct mail on Ebay. This email was quick, courteous and straightforward, at no point during the email did I feel like Machinator248 was going to run off with my money and all comms were asking me if everything was satisfactory. Payment was as expect via paypal and again everything was followed up in a timely manner.
Delivery was quick, around a week but considering it had to get to the UK this is often better then most GW/FW/BL packages.
SIDE NOTE: check out machinator248 on ebay for some very cool baneblade/shadowsword components amongst other things.
Result: 8/10

Packaging and Presentation:
The model was shipped in a nice padded envelope which initially I was worried about but on opening discovered that additional packagin material was included and this helped protect the model in transit. Personally I would have prefered a small card box or similar but i appreciate that this is not a business as such and is a side venture so I underrstand the need to keep costs down.
Prentationwise I wasnt expecting huge boxes or patterened bags, i was please however that every component had its own individual ziplock bag so everything had that extra bit of protection.
Result: 7/10

Quality of Materials and Manufacture:
Being a resin based conversion kit I was initially concerned with the quality of the models, both in terms of air bubbles, overcast and casting stalks. As you can see from the pics this need not have been the case:

There were no miscasts in the kit i recieved, casting points only had small lumps and for the most part all edges were sharp. The inclusion of a hatch to cover the hole in the lower hull was also a nice touch.
The details on the body are great, the rivets scale well with the Chimera ones and the large hatch is good as well. I am however not the biggest fan of the turret but have converted mine as a spare.
Result: 9/10

Ease of use and Scale:
As you can see from the above pictures the model needs little clean up and other then the usually wash for resin is workable straight away.
The kit is a great add-on for the current Chimera and really does add to the look, if you are starting an army this would be a great place to start for looking at alternatives, as I have an exsisitng for with Chimeras I choose this kit to add something familiar but different for my Inquisitors ride. One caveat the kit came with was that FW turrets dont fit, it has since turned out that this is not the case and as you can see from the pics below this kit works well with the chosen base tank:

As you can see a great model that works well with current GW Imperial Gaurd products and one that looks like it should have come from FW.
Result: 8/10

Value for money:
Most definately good value for money, given a similar kit from FW would cost at least £20-25gbp I personally cant fault it and feel it is worth the money, just because of the time it saves converting your own chimeras.
When you also factor in that you can buy the Imperial Guard Chimera Chasis sprue from Let the Dice Decide for £10 this makes the complete conversion only marginally more expensive then the standard Chimera.
Result: 8/10

Overall Rating and Final Thoughts
Overall a great kit and one that I am please I picked up, whilst it is only WIP so far I hope to feature the model more on the blog as it gets further on in its progression. The kit however is a great buy and would recommend it to anyone who is new to converting, resin and just wants something different with little to no hassle. A good solid product.
Result: 8/10

heres this weeks 5 find, sorry for not posting these for a week or two hopefully this lot will make up for it:

1. Independent Painters have a very sweet NMM Blood Angels Standard bearer up this week, one of the best NMMs for a while.
2. Mordian 7th has an Awesome inquistional Storm raven posted up, looks neat with some very simple but effective conversions.
3. Musings of a metal mind has a great Space Marine commission force up, the Angels of flame.
4. Jawaballs over at The Blood Angels blog has some neat little objective or as he refers to them loot markers posted up.
5. Over on Sanguine sons we have a neat little guide on how to paint hair. Looks good and will certainly come in useful for me.

Friday 5 Finds - 28.01.11

Hi Folks,
heres this weeks 5 find, sorry for the delay busy week with the family visiting after the bad weather cried christmas off and work but hopefully this lot will make up for it:

1. White Metal Games has a rather cool looking Defiler conversion for his slaanesh forces, ceraintly doesnt worry about LoS!
2. Mordian7th has another Defiler based conversion over on his blog, though this time not quite so chaotic!
3. Mike over at Constantly Risking Obscurity has his work on a Black Templars Dread from the AoBR box set dread.
4. Mr Black has posted up some pics of a really really cool looking Khorne Terminator Lord he has completed on commission.
5. Over on his blog Mart has posted some of the work on his Winter wargaming board, looks good so far cant wait til its finished.

Modelling News - Guard Weapons Questions & Bases update!

A fellow guardsman struggling with his weapons choices!

Well folks more progress today and a step backwards I'm afraid!

First up the step forward, today I finally took the step to order my bases for the force. I headed over to Secret Weapon Minis earlier and not only picked up a set of the Urban Beveled bases but decided to grab some of the small metal shell casings they sell. So I'm keeping an eye out for those and hope that once they arrive you guys don't mind a little review of all the bits I've ordered.

Now for the step backwards, I'm just placing an order on the old Forgeworld site for some of the Cadian Special Weapons Teams and it struck me I have no idea what weapons fits work in "todays" Guard Army. So folks I'm turning to you for advice on what works in what situation. To give you a bit more feedback locally I will mainly be facing Space Marines (of all flavours, both Imp and Chaos), Tau, Eldar and Orks, though obviously there are others out there. So my questions are what weapons fits are the best all rounders, both in general and for the following units:

• Command Squad
• Platton Command Squads
• Heavy Weapons Teams
• Guard Squads

In the case of all these I'd also really like to know do heavy weapons work in these squads or is it best just to run them light and just have special weapons?
Any advice on weapons fits would be appreciated as this one really has me stumped.

Friday 5 Finds - 21.01.11

Hi Folks
Once again apologies for the quite week from me, I've managed to get a few reviews up and have another due to go up soon and finally my order of Cadians arrives just in time to see the announcement from Forgeworld that they are planning some nice Cadian conversion kits so at the minute I'm back to a crawl but hopefully well get some work completed and some vehicles ordered soon to tie me over till the new releases! In the meantime here are this weeks 5 finds:

1. First up over on Black Matt's blog we have some pics from the GT and of one of the most amazing looking Tau forces I have seen in a while
2. Back to Dark Future games now for a bit of a throw down and some pics of a superbly painted space marine predator.

Friday 5 Finds - 14.01.11

Hi Folks
apologies for the quite week from me, i kind of got tied up reading every spare second this week and have read two very good books, will probably get something up about them on monday and possibly (assuming my order from Maelstrom arrives) get some modelling started. In the meantime here are this weeks 5 finds:

1. Dark Future Gaming have their return of the Artist of the week feature, this week its Bohun, some awesome models there.
2. over on AGGTG the sentinal squadron is complete and looking rather tasty, might have to borrow an idea or two :)
3. Independant painters has a rather heavily weathered Ultramarines rhino (not to mention a video from one of my favourite shows of all time - not to mention having worked with a chap who was there one I know a fair bit about) so worth a look
4. More Blue Smurfs....... I mean Ultramarine action from Hephesto's Forge, a nice model and hopefully we'll see some more.
5. Finally over at Mywargame some progress on the plan to reboot some old Salamanders, its not a big start in terms of numbers but its a nice bit of sculpting.

Hi Folk

Hello again folks,
Back again so soon, after all my excitement I thought I better get on and get these up before I loose momentum so here are this weeks Five Finds:

1. JP over on the Artic Templars Blog has created an awesome and intimidating looking Furioso Librarian Dreadnought that is well worth checking out here.
2. Next more updates on Les Bursley's spectacular Astorath WIP are up on Awesome Paint job, a must for any painting fan.
3. Black Matt over at his Black Legion Blog has a superb set of pics on his freehand painted Blood Angels Death Company Rhino/Razorback - the freehand on the RB is subtle but its there if you look.
4. b.smoove on A Gentleman's Ones has a great recipe and tutorial for painting black on large expanses of cloth.
5. Finally SC Mike has a frugal and unique take on creating your own Banewolf, an interesting and fun conversion using wholly recycled parts.

All your Base are belong to........... us? Part the second!

After asking the question and sticking up a poll to judge the mood and thoughts of those reading I thought this wouldn't get much action, oh boy was I wrong! not only in a few days did the poll get the most votes so far on any poll, but also the comments on the post were the most ever received, so a massive thanks to all those that contributed and commented.

After a rather decisive winner in the voting and some rather insightful posting in the comments section of the post from a few folks (albeit slightly biased but we can forgive that) I am happy to announce a clear winner, consensus or collective drooling - call it what you will. The results were:

As you can clearly see the winner by a Suffolk mile (bit like a country mile but with more cider!) are the Secret Weapons Bases. Personally after all the useful info Mr Justin provided in the comments sections, the recommendations he got and my own personal preference I am glad they won. For those of you still curious as to which bases these are here's another picture:

As you can see a good range, nice detail and looking at those pictures some pretty good casting. I will hopefully get an order in once the New Year has rocked up, but for those of you that are interested the bases can be bought from Mr Justin here:
 

SECRET WEAPON MINIATURES

 

Once I pick the bases up I intend to get some of the other exceptional bits and pieces, such as the bolter shells just for the hell of it. Once its available I fancy some of the Roman Numeral brass etch too, depending on the size. So once ordered and arrived expect a product review on those SWM items.

 

Also just so the fans of the other bases aren't too upset don't worry as I intend to use the other bases in a number of other smaller projects to tie them together with a coherent theme.

This week we have a fine selection of models from all over that there t'interweb! Including some rather unusual Space Marines. So are you sitting comfortably? Then let's begin:

1. John on Santa Cruz Warhammer has an update on his Amazing conversion of Belial of the Dark Angels, looking forward to the painting of this one!
2. Atreides over at Sons of Sanguinius has some rather interesting Imperial Guard Veteran conversions up on his blog, along with some force ideas!
3. Mordian 7th this week shows the first of the two Dark Eldar entries to appear in the list with his take on the Venom transport.
4. Over on Ricalopia we have some rather cool Dark Eldar conversions to represent those mythical creatures of the Eldar, The Harlequins.
5. Last but by no means least we have a Video post from Mike at Constantly Risking Obscurity of a whole slew of rather cool Lego Space Marines, including a dreadnought, speeder and a remote control Predator - Oh Yes Baby!!

Well folks after a few days trawling the web since I was originally given the links I have narrowed the choice of bases for the city fight based guard to the two selections show below.
I was wondering if anyone had experience of the two companies and what peoples preferences were towards the quality and style of the bases. so far I have found the following options:

Any ideas, comments, reviews or other comments would be appreciated. Cost wise the two work out very similar in price but the Dragon Forge bases seem to have a slightly larger range.

Obviously once they were received each base would have minor conversion detail like extra rubble, soil, bricks, weapons and body parts added on. When trying to decide on a theme I was considering just sticking with one range but would a mixture of the two work?

Any thoughts and ideas would be great, also feel free to vote in my short poll on the side for which is your preference.

Once again a day late, one of these days I will have a quiet friday at work where I can actually sit down and get the five finds up, until that time though I have found you some nice links this week, who knows one day the network will have a queit day where people realise I have important work elsewhere!

tanks, Tanks, TANKS, TAAAANKS!?! - Part 2

Finally after a week of Snow, Ice and conditions to make a Valhallan feel chilly in this neck of the woods the votes are finally in with regards to my Tank company. I must say I'm pleased with the results as they are very logical, the result are:

Looks like many of you fine Ladies and Gentlemen share my thought process and have picked my preferred option. So come next month, or maybe January, an order will be going in to Forgeworld for the first of many Tanks, Brass Etch sheets and Cadian bits (my god have mercy on my wallet) now just have to decide which Tank to pick up.

Friday 5 Finds - 05.11.10

Here are this weeks Five Finds, no rhyme or reason to them, no theme to them this week just links ive come across in the last week that i like:

1. Over at My Wargame.com we have an excellent article on reviving and remodelling the Adeptus Arbites using cadians and greenstuff. very nice and a good job of bringing the models back to life.
2. Master of the Forge has the start of an excellent "Artscale" chaos space marine squad, the parts are in and the first completed model looks awesome.
3. Massive Voodoo has some of his latest WIP projects, a spectacular nurgle marine and a larger scale saxon warrior, both very drool worthy!
4. On Chapter of the Iron Skull we have his almost completed Iron Skulls Captain Marcus looking rather clean and swanky.
5. Finally on Dark Future Games we have an outrageously over the top Salamander Fireborn conversion - its big, its metal and its mental!!

Friday 5 Finds - 29.10.10

Well folks, this weeks 5 finds has a slight Halloweeny feel to it! A lot of undead and mutant action in this week so enjoy this spooktacular (sorry) edition:

1. Bell of Lost Souls have some entertaining kill team style rules for zombie games! well worth a download and definitely something to get the modelling minds tingling with excitement.
2. More undead warriors now with Winterdynes awesome Forge world Chaplain dreadnought, some nice tips and tricks and a subtly different colour scheme.
3. Next we have Strictly Averages mutant Chaos Space Marines, though whilst I say Chaos who knows but the man himself, there are some nice conversions and good use of the various plastic parts out there.
4. Up now we have the hordes of the Imperial Guard with Admiral Drax converting a nice little Chimera run about for his forces.
5. Finally over on Path of the Exodite we have an excellent scratch built Eldar Fighter, its clean lines almost redeem your eyes from the undead action above!

Friday 5 finds - 15.10.10

A Day late and a dollar....extra??? Today I have your 5 finds plus a link to a chance to win some goodies! This week there is a mix of flavours, from the Emperors finest to the lap dogs of chaos, so enjoy!

This weeks Five Finds are from the past two weeks as I've been a little remiss of late.

1. Dave Taylor has put up some excellent and highly detailed pics of the Adeptus Custodes army he is selling off for charity. Dave is one of my favourite hobbyists and has inspired many of my projects and keep and eye for my homage to his guard in coming months.
2. From Ron over at From The Warp we have an excellent and highly detailed Dark Apostle conversion, Ron's step by step pics are something I would like to emulate in the future.
3. Heresy Workshop have this simple but effective converison of a Renegade Ogryn with a ripper gun, this shows well how a simple conversion can work.
4. Heresy Legions have some pics of their completed pre heresy Apothecary from their Rogue Trader homage.
5. Finally we have a link to the Wolf templars blog where they have some very cool conversions based on the new Forgeworld marks of armour. Very nice work.

The elite squadrons of the Imperial Navy struggle for dominance against the foul Xenos pilots of the Tau Empire and the brutal Skwadrons of the Orks in this high-speed game of aerial combat, which up-scales our popular Aeronautica Imperialis rules for use with the finely-detailed Warhammer 40,000-scale aircraft kits in the Forge World range. Chalk your kill tally up on the Dispersal board and shoot down your opponents to become the first Ace pilot in this dramatic game of high-altitude combat!

Both of these games can be found on your Games Day map. To play, simply turn up at any point over the day, and our dedicated team of volunteers will ensure that you are thrust straight into the action!

Forge World Studio Displays
As usual, our entire Studio Design Team will be present at Games Day, showing off work-in-progress projects as well as displays of their recent work, and answering your questions on anything from ‘wish list’ models that they’d love to sculpt to the process of creating our master models.


Will Hayes will be proudly displaying a large Eldar project that he has been working on for quite some time now – in fact it’s a very large Eldar project! Will has recently been responsible for many of the popular Space Marine Armour and Weapons packs that Forge World has released, as well as the Elysian Tauros and Tauros Venator assault vehicles.


Phil Stutcinskas has been deeply involved with our new range of Space Marine Armour and Weapons packs, and as well as offering tips and hints on the finer arts of painting and weathering Forge World models he will be displaying a work-in-progress Dreadnought model, along with some of the exquisitely painted kits featured in Imperial Armour Model Masterclass Volume I.


Stuart Williamson, whose recent work includes the Ork Stompa Upgrade kits and Battlewagon Lifta-Droppa, will be showcasing a forthcoming, brand new Land Raider variant as well as explaining the finer points of vehicle modelling.


Daren Parrwood, the talented designer behind the fantastic Grot Tanks and Caestus Assault Ram has recently been hard at work on another Eldar project that he will be unveiling exclusively at Games Day.

Imperial Armour Volume 9: The Badab War Part I Available to Pre-Order Now
Forge World can now proudly announce that the eagerly-anticipated new Imperial Armour Volume 9: The Badab War Part I is available to pre-order now for despatch in the week commencing October 4th and is priced at £45. This new Warhammer 40,000 expansion details the shadowed origins, terrible secrets and savage birth of Lugft Huron’s secession from the Imperium.

As usual, the first 500 copies of this 208-page tome will be signed by the writer, Alan Bligh, and Forge World’s book production team have done sterling work adding fantastic new depth to the Warhammer 40,000 universe in the form dozens of colour profiles, star maps and colour photographs. The book also contains a full colour, double sided poster of a detailed Badab Sector map by Sam Lamont and brand new Space Marine artwork by Paul Bonner, which can also be pre-ordered now.

In addition to full background histories for the nine Space Marine Chapters who played the most significant part in the early stages of the Badab War, the book also contains a full army list of the Tyrant’s Legion, a purpose-designed campaign system that includes five unique missions and a special Boarding Assault mini-expansion for Warhammer 40,000.
