Forge World Newsflash - Praetor Sneak Peek and Weekender Details

As always all the important bits below:

=========================================

Horus Heresy
Hi there, As you read this, we’ll be busy transforming the Nottingham Belfry Hotel into a Horus Heresy sanctum. In the meantime, we’ve got a few snippets to reveal in today’s newsflash about the event, as well as news of a Horus Heresy gaming weekend which will be held at Warhammer World later this year.

The Ultimate Horus Heresy Getaway is Almost Upon Us
This weekend, Forge World, Black Library and hundreds of Horus Heresy fans will descend upon the Nottingham Belfry Hotel for the Horus Heresy Weekender.

Please note that all tickets for this event have now sold out.
Not only will the new Event Only Davinite Serpent Lodge Priest model be available for the first time, but Weekender attendees will also have the first opportunity in the world to buy our second incredible Primarch miniature. This is the third of our collectable Horus Heresy Character Series: Simon Egan’s incredible Fulgrim the Illuminator, Primarch of the Emperor’s Children Legion.
We also expect to have small numbers of Edgar Skomorowski’s detailed Praetor Set (pictured left), and Stuart Williamson’s imposing Legion Glaive Super-Heavy Tank on sale at the event.

Around the venue, you’ll also see twenty fantastic Legion art prints, such as the one pictured left. These 200cm x 80cm prints have been exclusively produced for the Weekender, all eighteen Legions are represented (some more than once) and each is available to buy (stand not included).

We’ve also got some more fantastic event only items up our sleeves, including Loyalist and Traitor Legion posters, four different designs of Horus Heresy t-shirts and if that weren’t enough, every attendee will receive an exclusive Weekender backpack.
With seminars, Q&A’s, art showcases, signings, modelling and painting demos, open gaming and participation games, there’s almost too much to do on each day – not to mention the Horus Heresy Pub Quiz and the Zone Mortalis Last Man Standing challenge on Saturday evening.
We’re also excited to announce that Alan Bligh will be hosting an exclusive Author Death Match in the Practice Cages on Saturday afternoon, when Black Library’s John French and Aaron Dembski-Bowden take to the field of battle to play the exclusive scenario you’ll find in your programme. This is a face-off that’s not to be missed!

Horus Heresy Weekender Reservation Orders
If you’ve placed a reservation order for the Horus Heresy Weekender, you’ll now have received your confirmation e-mail. You must bring a copy of this with you to collect your order, as it is your proof of payment. Reservation orders will be available for collection from the Sales stand after 12:00 on Saturday, and we look forward to seeing you there.
Warhammer World Horus Heresy Betrayal Gaming Weekend – 24th-25th August
This weekend is quite unlike any other, where for the first time you can bring legendary heroes like Garviel Loken or even Primarchs such as Horus the Warmaster to battle. You will experience the opening parts of Horus’ ambitions to overthrow the Emperor and set the galaxy ablaze.
Over the weekend, you’ll play four games recreating the exciting and tense battles covered in Forge World’s The Horus Heresy Book One - Betrayal. You will use the Legiones Astartes army list and appendices, allowing you to field exotic weaponry, titanic war machines and unyielding Primarchs across three games on Saturday and Sunday, culminating in a massive Doubles game on Sunday afternoon. Your ticket includes lunch on both days, plus an evening meal on the Saturday, followed by a Heresy-themed quiz.
Also on the Saturday, Black Library will be joining us to showcase their millions-selling Horus Heresy books. We can also announce that on the Sunday, the author of Betrayal, Alan Bligh will be in attendance, giving you the opportunity to have your Horus Heresy tomes signed and talk about the finer points of the book.
So, Legionary, will you fight for the Emperor of Mankind or the Warmaster Horus? Tickets are available now.
Thanks,

Forge World Newsletter #338 - Necron Emplacements, Fulgrim Model and Davinite lodge priest

As always all the important bits below:

=========================================
Hi there, This week we turn our attention back to the Necrons of the sinister Maynarkh Dynasty, with two more fantastic new kits available to pre-order now. We’ve also got some exciting events news, concerning the Horus Heresy Weekender.
Necron Sentry Pylons
The stasis-tombs of the Necrons are vast and shadowy edifices, and many an Imperial Explorator expedition has made planetfall on a dead world only to vanish without trace; slain at the hands of the unliving guardian-constructs that watch over their slumbering masters.
Among these defences are automated weapons platforms of strange design known as Pylons. Some of these are huge, cyclopean constructs, but Imperial logisticians have codified smaller, tactical variants as Sentry Pylons. These powerful devices are arcs of glittering metal equipped with a weapons array that can strike with power so great as to be almost beyond comprehension. Some are outfitted with Heat Cannons; thermal energy weapons of extraordinary power, others bear Focussed Death Rays, which emit coruscating beams of force that can slice through ranks of infantry and armoured war machines with contemptuous ease.
Stuart Williamson has designed two more Sentry Pylons, armed with a Heat Cannon and a Focussed Death Ray respectively. Each is a multi-part resin kit that stands almost 6" (150mm) tall, and these two Sentry Pylons are available to pre-order now for despatch from Friday 10th May. The Sentry Pylon’s cruciform arc profile is packed with detail, making each a fantastic painting project as well as a potent battlefield unit. These two new options can be fielded in artillery units alongside the Sentry Pylon with Gauss Exterminator. Full rules for all our new Necron kits can be found in Imperial Armour Volume Twelve – The Fall of Orpheus.
Forge World Events News
Horus Heresy Weekender 2013 Exclusives and Pre-releases Unveiled

As you may have seen in a newsletter earlier this week, we’ve unveiled two of the exciting releases that we’ll have available at the Forge World and Black Library Horus Heresy Weekender. If you missed it, here’s a couple more pictures:

Fulgrim the Illuminator, Primarch of the Emperor’s Children
The second Primarch to receive a jaw-dropping model and the third of Forge World’s Horus Heresy Character Series is Fulgrim. Simon Egan’s incredible miniature depicts the Master of the Emperor’s Children in the thick of furious combat, and Weekender attendees will be the first in the world to get their hands on him.
Fulgrim the Illuminator Primarch of the Emperor's Children
Event Only Davinite Lodge Priest
A third addition to our range of 2013 Event Only models is Mark Bedford’s Davinite Serpent Lodge Priest. This detailed miniature will be available for the first time at the Horus Heresy Weekender.

Horus Heresy Weekender Reservation Orders
If you’ve got your tickets for the Horus Heresy Weekender (and there's not many left if you haven’t), we are still accepting reservation orders for this event. This is the best way to ensure we have the exact product you want, packed up and waiting for you at the show. Our sales stand will primarily be carrying the Forge World Horus Heresy range of miniatures and books, but you can reserve any Forge World or Warhammer Forge models that you wish.
As with all our UK shows, Horus Heresy Weekender reservation orders are pre-paid to make the collection process quicker and easier, leaving you with more time to enjoy the rest of the event.
Please telephone the Customer Service team on 0115 900 4995 to place a reservation order. We will require your name, a contact telephone number and e-mail address, along with the list of products you wish to reserve, and you will also need your card details to hand too. We’ll process the payment while you are on the phone, and in the week before the event you’ll receive a confirmation e-mail containing your order number. This is your proof of payment and you must bring this e-mail with you to claim your order. We must receive Horus Heresy Weekender reservations by Monday 13th May

Necron Night Shroud Bomber and Necron Terrain

As always all the important bits below:

=========================================
Hi there, with the upcoming release of our new Imperial Armour book, this week’s newsletter has some great news for Necron players; a stunning new kit and a unique Realm of Battle tile are now available to pre-order. Read on for more!
Necron Night Shroud Bomber
The Night Shroud is a dedicated bomber that is larger than the more numerous Night Scythe and Doom Scythe craft, alongside which it operates, whose origins date back countless aeons to the lost battles of the War in Heaven.
The Night Shroud was built to carry a relic of that ancient and apocalyptic conflict, so-called Death Spheres, containment vessels that imprison the merest fragment of anti-matter. The Death Sphere's potent warhead is kept out of phase with the material universe until the sphere detonates, when it unleashes an energy blast capable of annihilating anything it touches.
The Necron Night Shroud Bomber, designed by Daren Parrwood, is an imposing battlefield presence. This complete resin and plastic kit is packed with detail, and its sinister, elongated profile makes for an impressive centrepiece or painting project for any Necrons collection. Full rules and background for this construct will be included in the forthcoming Imperial Armour Volume Twelve: The Fall of Orpheus.
Realm of Battle Necron Tomb Citadel
The stasis-crypts of the Necrons are protected by great defensive structures; near-impregnable fortifications designed to stand against the ravages of eternity, hostile action and deadly environments. Tomb Citadels often stand on the outermost borders of a wider complex. They act as watchtowers and outposts that are often the merest tip of the iceberg; the fathomless depths of silent galleries and stasis-chambers that make up the nameless cities of the Necrons extending far below them.
A Tomb Citadel is far more than an inert relic of strange aeons past, however. Each is a near-living war machine in its own right, and Imperial combat records record these brutish structures rising from the very earth, or phasing strangely into existence in the midst of a Necron assault. If not quickly destroyed, these dread ziggurats will form a beachhead from which the undying legions pour forth to destroy their foes.
The Realm of Battle Necron Tomb Citadel, designed by Blake Spence, is a 2' x 2' (609mm x 609mm) tile which can fit onto a Citadel Realm of Battle board. Packed with detail, the stepped levels of the Tomb Citadel allow infantry and vehicles to be placed and moved upon it, and multiple tiles can be fitted together to create larger fortifications and complexes. The narrow passages between the monolithic structures and the vantage points gained from the higher levels can make for a tense and exciting game.
Full rules and background for this construct will be included in the forthcoming Imperial Armour Volume Twelve: The Fall of Orpheus.
Both of these fantastic new releases are available to pre-order now for despatch from Friday 5th April.

Forge World Newsletter #311 - Necron Canoptek Acanthrites

As always all the important bits below:

=========================================

Hi there, In this week’s newsletter we’re excited to announce an addition to our Necron range: the sinister Canoptek Acanthrites are available to pre-order now. We’ve also got an events update for you, as we are now accepting reservation orders for both Games Day UK and Games Day Australia.

Necron Canoptek Acanthrites
Resembling monstrous, artificial insects enfolded in shadowed wings of tenebrous force that propel them through the skies, Canoptek Acanthrites are murderous Necron constructs created for a single purpose: the destruction of those who have dared to claim the worlds of the ancient Necron empire as their own.

Acanthrites' agile, coiling tails are tipped with hyper-phased voidblades and they are armed with high-powered thermal cutting beams, and this potent armament allows them to carve and dissemble solid matter with horrifying speed. Unsurprisingly, when these devastating weapons are turned upon frail flesh the results are terrible to behold.

Canoptek Acanthrites are often encountered in the vanguard of Necron assault spearheads and extermination campaigns, and their numbers vary from a mere handful to vast hosts of these abhorrent machine-locusts, capable of stripping a city down to rubble and slaughtering its inhabitants in a merciless tide of destruction.
The Necron Canoptek Acanthrites set, designed by Will Hayes, comprises three finely detailed multi-part resin models. Experimental rules for these rapacious constructs are available to download from our website, and this set is available to pre-order now for despatch from Friday 31st August.

New Flyers revealed in White Dwarf - Sneak Peeks

The latest White Dwarf has an absolute ton of pictures of the new Flyers - Some Awesome and some really not.
This isn't an exclusive on my part and thanks should go to Blood of Kittens for digging this one up.

Space Marine StormTalon Gunship

Ork Flyers

Necron Flyers

As with what most people I really aren't a big fan of the model for the Space marine Stormtalon but the leaked rules certainly do look good, will have to see about some conversions using Land Speeders (such as the FW one).

The Ork flyer I love, I'm not generally an Ork fan but the model with its 3 variations is just Orks, they have captured them perfectly.

The Necron Doom Scythe and Night Scythe kit is OK, nothing unexpected but then again nothing exciting, still ties in well with the rest of the kit.

Overall nice to see some new models and would love to know your thoughts.

Hammer and Anvil - Book Review

Hammer and Anvil by James Swallow
The Sisters of Battle are the Emperor’s most devout worshippers, fierce warriors preaching the purity of the Imperium and scourging their enemies with bolter and flamer. On a distant world, the Ecclesiarchy outpost of Sanctuary 101, was wiped out by an implacable foe - the fearless, soulless necrons. Now, a mission of the Sisterhood has returned to reconsecrate the site - but the metallic nightmares still lurk in the darkness, guarding a secret that has lain dormant for millennia. A vicious battle will be fought - one that can only end in the total destruction of the unrelenting xenos, or the annihilation of the proud Sororitas.
This is the second Sisters of Battle title from James Swallow (third if you count the audio book) and one that keeps the reader attached to the members of the sisterhood that we first met back in 2006. Whilst this novel is set in a similar time to the previous, it does show that when an author takes a break from the characters it can often be quite hard to reacquire, let alone acquaint, themselves with them in quite the same manner. In this case this sadly leads to a book that leaves the reader wondering if they’d been short changed as the characters were completely different. In the case of this title, i think however luckily that hasn’t been an issue which, for me, was a huge relief as this book works well as a standalone rather then a sequel.

As a brief overview it has taken ten years for the Sisterhood to be able to return to Sanctuary 101 and reconsecrate the site. But as a result of politics, the Sisters are accompanied by Tegas of the Adeptus Mechanicus for some purpose of his own. And Canoness Sepherenia has some deeper purpose of her own, beyond the reconsecration of their convent and memorialising their fallen sisters. Strangely, the bodies of the sisters previously slain by the necron ten years before had previously been claimed by the Ordos Xenos. Things become that much murkier when the sisters find a strange, single metallic head. An alien artifact? The necron. To tell more would be a spoiler but suffice to say we get some fantastic action and some intriguing looks in to the Necron world.

As usual with James’ writing its crisp, to the point, no added frills and like the sisters, battle hardened to keep the blood and glory brigade happy. Add to this a battle with the Necrons, as well as facing off against the double dealing machinations of other parties and it’s a title that really does keep you glued from the first page to the last. I look forward to sharing more of the sisters exploits in future titles. My only real gripe with the whole book is that it was clearly written as a Necron codec release piece and in some cases takes showcasing the new range/models (albeit in a story form) more seriously then the action. Still for me as its a Sisters of Battle book its redeemed and gets a respectable three and a half out of five.

Fall of Damnos - Book Review

Fall of Damnos by Nick Kyme
When Damnos is hit by cataclysmic earthquakes, an ancient force is awakened. Deep beneath the earth, the necrons rise from their slumber to decimate the human populace. All appears lost until salvation comes from the heavens – the Ultramarines brave an orbital bombardment to deploy their forces on Damnos, led by two legendary warriors – Captain Cato Sicarius and Chief Librarian Tigurius.

They are the planet's last, great hope against the remorseless alien foes, but tensions within their ranks threaten to derail victory. As battle rages on Damnos, and the Ultramarines seek to defeat their soulless enemies, Tigurius receives a terrible vision – a vision telling of the death of a hero...
In the latest offering Nick Kyme, takes the reins in the latest installation of the Space Marine Battles Series and tackles the Ultramarines, not his normal chapter of choice but personally I think Nick did a fantastic job of keeping the Space Marines faithful to their natures as genetically modified super-warriors, created only to kill and bring glory to the Emperor,. he also as has been noted in the recent trend of the Black Library, manages to portray them as people with emotions. Ok, so those emotions and emotional responses might not be quite normal for a human. They are, after all, Adeptus Astartes and they may just be tempted to kill everything that offends them but they still have emotion.

The lead characters were varied and ranged from Marines, to Dreadnoughts and back down to humans and I enjoyed the concerns and doubt about the actions of the Captain, because the story also balanced it with reasons not to doubt him, this was a good plot device as it gave the story multiple perspective and it leave you the reader trying to decide ultimately which perspective is the correct one, a challenge often lacking from modern fiction. I, like other I have spoken too about the book, found myself rooting for the three lead sergeants, and to a degree the main characters in my eyes, and personally I'd love to read more about them as long as it wasn’t the pointless death that often seems to befall growing characters in the Black Library. The sergeants have such an interesting friendship (or even animosity at times) that watching them interact and play off one another was fascinating and helped fill the dead areas of the book.

I'm also a big fan of the way Kyme treats his Librarians. He doesn't make them ridiculously overpowered, but they are effective. Nor does he make a mess of the powers he does give them and what they can do seems clearly set out, rather than the hand-wavy and rather clumsy efforts of certain other writers. Though in this case he dealt with the powers of Tigurius well and did give him the definite edge he needed.

Only bad points in my eyes are that When Nick about personal combat, either in a duel style situation or as a side line in a major battle, it can be really easy to lose track of who's making what move and where all the individuals are (or even who they are). It's only a slight complaint, and it doesn't happen *too* often, but it was a little niggle that needs a touch of work. The other thing that bugged me was the nature of the Necrons, I don’t want to give too much away but suffice to say the normal lower order troops are as expected and do what necrons do, the issue I had was with the overall controlling lords, there was something there that didn’t sit right, I don’t know what it is, I can’t tell you what bugged me, there’s just something I can’t put my finger on and it made them seem off slightly.

The book give you the reader a lot of thing to look at and imagine, things such as meaningful interaction between humans and Space Marines that's not overly drawn out but will satisfy those who enjoy reading such comparisons (like me). Different perspectives on the nature of courage and bravado, and what makes a good leader of men. A nice introduction to the Ultramarines chapter. Space Marines with emotion that are not overly sentimental but will still slap each other if they get on each other’s nerves, in short believable Space Marines. In summary, I highly recommend this one for its interesting representation of a very strict Chapter, excellent action sequences and overall enjoyability. For me a good solid four stars for this one.

Dead Men Walking - Book Review

Dead Men Walking by Steve Lyons
When the necrons rise, a mining planet descends into a cauldron of war and the remorseless foes decimate the human defenders. Salvation comes in an unlikely form – the Death Korps of Kreig, a force as unfeeling as the Necrons themselves. When the two powers go to war, casualties are high and the magnitude of the destruction is unimaginable.

The latest release for the Imperial Guard from the Black Library is a bit of a Marmite novel! Love it or hate it though one thing’s for sure it certainly makes you think about the Death Korps and reveals much of their back ground and organisation.

The novel has a simple premise, Necrons, Guard, Civilians? Then game on. This though to my mind is somewhat over shadowed by the style of flitting between one character or the other. Linked to the fact that the book has action but its short, sharp and has little detail, to me not something that makes the book work as a combat novel.

The novel itself didn’t really impress me unfortunately but it was a good first look at the Death Korps, giving little bits of info away about the way they are “titled”, no names just numbers, designations and ranks. The ease with which they died and sacrificed themselves as well as the callousness of the commanders was good and really helped highlight the fatalistic nature of the korps.

Other interesting bits where how the novel showed the reaction of the local population to an almost alien unfeeling invader, and that’s just the Death Korps, and how it takes time to defend itself and almost accept the Korps. Yes, there are more aspects to the book but to go in to them more might spoil it but let’s just say not a great novel as far as stories go but when it comes to information and background a very good read. Over all then from me it’s a three and a half stars!
