Sudanese Colonial Infantry

Last weekend I finished a second Sudanese unit which now joins my growing colonial British army.  The figures are by Barry Minot and were part of a large group of 25/30mm figures that I bought a couple of years ago:

These troops are wearing the brown woollen jumpers common to Sudanese troops on campaign. Not sure if the guy at the rear is taking a leak, or maybe just reloading!

Colonial British Infantry

Another unit completed. these are British infantry that I shall use alongside my recently painted Gurkhas and Screw Gun team in an Afghan setting.  The figures are by Barry Minot and must be going on 50 years old:

Update for the week

I have been quite busy finishing off some small projects.

First off, I have completed my colonial highland regiment, by adding another figure and an officer, bringing the total up to 12.  They are by Barry Minot. The new figures were kindly given to me by a very generous wargamer:

Also donated to the cause are these lovely rifle armed Zulus, also by Minot:

I have also completed a group of Hadendowah warriors. These came from Tradition and I believe they are from the original Stadden range:

And finally, just for fun, I felt the urge to paint some Airfix Union soldiers in the form of a kneeling firing line:

More Tribesmen

I have been experimenting a bit to see which tribesmen look the best by painting samples. First off are these Barry Minot Beja warriors.  They are nice figures, easy to paint, but I am not keen on this particular pose and so far I only have three figures by Minot. If I can find more I would use them:

Next, I have a handful of Minifigs Beja. Whilst I liked the riflemen recently painted, these figures just look wrong to me and I don't think I would bother painting any more:

Finally I have some Ansars and these are from Bicorne Miniatures, I believe originally Connoiseur Figures sculpted by Peter Gilder. I like these very much and I plan to produce two full units, with the second unit on the workbench right now:

What is interesting is that there are four or five base poses and variety has been created by adding different heads and weapons to the castings. These figures are still available from Bicorne Miniatures and I may add a few more to build up the numbers.

Sudanese Infantry

Continuing to build up my small colonial force, I have recently painted these Barry Minot Sudanese Infantry, in Egyptian service. Once again, these proved to be lovely figures to paint:

Barry Minot Colonial Painted Test Figures

Well it transpires that the Boers and Gurkhas are not Minot after all, but are by Charles Stadden. In a way this is good news as it means that I can add to the range because the figures are still available, sold by Tradition of London. I will certainly buy some command figures.

So, the Highlanders, Dervishers and Sudanese are certainly by Minot and my plan is to use these to create a small colonial force.  Numbers can be made up using Tradition figures.

With all that in mind I decided to paint some test figures. After some deliberation I settled on my gloss toy soldier style of painting, which I think suits these figures:

I shall have a go at the Dervish infantry next, although I only have three at the moment!

More Barry Minot Figures

I have managed to acquire a load more 30mm Colonial figures, which have been identified, by John Preece as by Barry Minot, for which I am most grateful.

I now have about 100 of these figures and I am trying to work out what they are. Here are some pictures of the various types. First off, I think these are Boer infantry, I only have about ten of these:

Next, we have some infantry that I am assuming are Sudanese, although the could be Egyptian. In all I must have about 50 in various poses:

Finally there are some British troops that look to me like Ghurkas:
Unfortunately there is only one command figure amongst the whole lot, so I will be on the lookout for some of those.  My plan is to paint these figures in slow tome and use them with the portable Colonial Wargames rules, when the book arrives.  So far I have painted 10 highlanders and three Dervish infantry.  I will put some pictures on my next entry.

Does anyone have the figure lists for this range as I would be interested to see the extent of it?
