More Warrior Russians

To provide the correct forces for my Leibnitz game I had to paint an additional couple of Ruiisian units.  These are Wrrior figures, consisting of a grenadier battalion:

And an artillery battery:

Russian Napoleonic Foot Artillery

I recently purchased these figures along with some infantry.  They were well painted and just required some touching up and new bases.  They will make a useful addition to my growing Russian army.  The figures are Minifigs S range, 25mm:

Soviet Artillery and Air Support

As part of the preparation for my forthcoming WW2 mini-campaign, I have completed the artillery support of the Soviet forces, along with some aircraft.

The guns are metal and by Irregular Miniatures, from their Really Useful Guns range and are scaled at somewhere between 15 and 20mm. Exactly what I needed to go with my Roco tanks and vehicles. The crews are 20mm, but on the small side and work well with the Airfix Russians:

First there are two field gun units, equipped with 122mm guns:
Second, we have two units of heavier 152mm guns:
I have also created some air support, in the shape of 2 x IL-2 ground attack aircraft and two La-5 fighters:
The aircraft are 1/144 scale by Zvezda.

Russian Artillery - ESCI

I thought I would have a go at the other half of the ESCI Russian Crimean War set, which includes a couple of guns and crews. I have never been inspired to paint these before, however, I decided to do a head swap for the gunners and extend the coat of the officer. The results are OK and this set provides a useful and cheap source of Russian artillery:

Russian Artillery

Another Russian gun team takes to the field. these particular figures are by Tumbling Dice. They are very nicely animated, cleanly cast and are lovely to paint. The only slight drawback is that there is some assembly involved and I hope my super glue will keep all the bits in place:

I am working on some more Cossacks, also from Tumbling Dice and I may make some progress over the weekend.

Ehmar Russian Artillery

These plastic troops from Ehmar have been lurking in a cupboard since long before I began my Douglas Miniatures Crimean War project. So I decided to dig them out and see how they look painted to match the metal figures. Size wise they work pretty well and in their new colours they are not too bad and will make a useful addition to the Russian artillery capability.

Russian Artillery

The second part of my artillery project is now completed to match the British, also completed today. I have painted a second limber and added an artillery commander, a Strelets figure:

I have also painted a Strelets heavy gun, manned by a crew from the same company in a small defensive position. This was made from match sticks, cocktail sticks and DAS clay:

Next, back to painting Russian infantry!

Russian Cossack Horse Artillery

After a short break from painting, I have just completed one of the limber sets, which I featured in an earlier post. This has now been assembled and painted. It was a bit of a fiddle getting it all to go together, but got there in the end. Here is the new artillery team:

And deployed:

More on Artillery

Limbers and Artillery Teams

Douglas Miniatures produced limbers and horse teams for both sides. In fact the sets were identical apart from the outriders and the limbers themselves.

Russian Limber

This item comes in 7 parts:

R8 Russian Limber set, which includes a top for the limber.
A4 traces
A5 x 2 Wheels

The set also needs 4 horse, two each of

BH 2 Artillery Horse Saddled
BH 3 Artillery Horse Off Side
R28 Cossack Horse Artillery Outrider

British Limber

This item uses many common parts from the Russian limber, except for

A3 Limber Centre Pole

B20 RFA Outrider

And finally the British Gun:

"There my Lord is your enemy, there are your guns"

Russian Artillery

Douglas Miniatures produce a single Russian artillery piece, which is made up of four parts: A2 Gun Carriage with open trail and three other parts common to both the Russian and British guns, which are: A5 Wheel x 2 and A6 gun barrel. Here is a picture of the Russian version of the gun:

The artillerymen themselves depict Cossack horse artillery, but strangely there are two versions. R4, R5, R6 and R7 which are Cossack Horse Artillery in small fur cap, Officer, Gunner with Ramrod, Gunner with Spike and Gunner with Ball. Here they are:

The second version is made up from figures R24, R25, R26 and R27, which depict Cossack Horse Artillery in tall fur cap; again an officer, and gunners with ramrod, spike and ball. These are completely different castings from the short fur cap fellows, and I prefer them:

And just for fun, the Light Brigade has a go at taking them out:
