Pont de la Corniche over the the Doubs River at Dole, Jura (France)

"We could have done it a little further by going to Choisey where there was less of a slope, but I think that would have been less of a problem for the town and we wanted to stay within the municipal territory. 100 meters from the current bridge, for example, there is the Château de Crissey and we would then have had to start thinking about it at the inter-municipal level."

Gilbert Barbier, major of Dole

Staadtbrücke (Town Bridge) over the Drava River in Villach, Carinthia (Austria)

Drifting – on the water flows,
Pacing – walking along the banks,
Racing – the mind wanders,
On what does ponder?
What time is there to reflect?
There is nothing left to contemplate,
save the very condition of the soul.

Stadtbrücke (City Bridge) over the Salzach River in Salzburg (Austria)

"As a reminder and warning. In Salzburg, more than 230 gipsys fell victim to the National Socialist racial policy. Imprisoned in the so-called "Maxglan Gypsy Camp", they were forced to do forced labor as part of the Glan Regulation. In the spring of 1943, they were deported to the extermination camps."

Xiazigou Bridge in the Houcheng county, Xinjiang (China)

"Robes of snow, crests of snow,
and beaks of azure jade,
they fish in shadowy streams.
Then startling up into
Flight, they leave emerald mountains for lit distances.
Pear blossoms, a tree-full, tumble in the evening wind."

Old chinese poem
translated by David Hinton

Schlossbrucke over the Ruhr River in Mulheim an der Ruhr, North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany)

May makes everything new,
Makes the soul fresh and free.
Leave the house, come out!
Wind a bouquet!
Sunshine shines all around,
The fields and groves are fragrant:
bird song, horn sound
Sounds along the forest

Lyrics from May makes everything new
from Hermann Adam von Kamp
poet from Mulheim

Pfaffendorfer Bridge over the Rhine River in Koblenz, Rhineland-Palatinate (Germany)

"The Pfaffendorf Bridge needs to be completely renovated, and in some cases even replaced. Otherwise, the bridge will be completely closed - that's the clear message from the civil engineering department...The Pfaffendorfer Bridge, one of the main traffic arteries in Koblenz and a historic bridge over the Rhine, is being rebuilt. The old bridge, which opened in 1953, will be demolished and replaced by a new one in an expected five-year construction period."

Slasko Dabrowski Bridge spanning the Vistula River in Warsaw (Poland)

... Some day, I will stop time.
Spread my wings like a bird.
I will fly like the wind
down to where my dreams
come true in Warsaw's multicolour streets

If you wish to see a Vistula dawn,
then come and ride along with us.
You will find out the glory that can be
a Warsaw day.

John F. Kennedy Bridge over the Meuse River in Maastricht (Netherlands)

The sky was clear, the morn was gay
In promise of a cloudless day.
Fresh flew the breeze, with whose light wing
Aspen and oak were quivering:
From flow’ret dank it dashed the dew,—
The harebell bent its blossom blue,—
And from the Meuse the mist-wreaths grey
That morning breeze had swept away,
Showing such scenes as well might seem
The fairy vision of a dream.
For changing still, and still as fair
Rock, wave, and wood were mingled there;
Peak over peak, fantastic ever,
The lofty crags deep chasms sever:

Bridge over the Oker Reservoir near Neu Schulenberg, Lower Saxony (Germany)

Spectacular discovery in the Harz Mountains! A long-forgotten village has now reappeared after almost 70 years - in the truest sense of the word! Because the village of Unterschulenberg in the Harz Mountains had to make way for the construction of the Okertalsperre in 1954 and disappeared under meters of water. Now it's back. In 1954, around 300 residents were resettled in Neu-Schulenberg, further up the hill, the village buildings were demolished down to the foundations, and the village was flooded with water. Nothing was to be seen of Unterschulenberg.

Europa Bridge over the Sill river near Innsbruck, Tyrol (Austria)

I'm so handsome,
I'm so great,
I'm Anton from Tirol
My giga-lean calves drive the girls crazy
My build is a wonder of nature.

I'm so strong
and wild, too.
I play it hot and ice cold,
when i wave my butt,
the snow bunnies scream SOS
and want Anton from Tirol.

Lyrics from Anton from Tyrol

Coronado Bay Bridge in San Diego, California (United States)

I can't sleep 'cause what if I dream
Of going back to San Diego?
We bought a one way ticket
So we could go see The Cure
And listen to our favorite songs in the parking lot
And think of every person I ever lost to San Diego

Tasman Bridge over the Derwent River in Hobart, Tasmania (Australia)

Hold me now, Oh hold me now
'Til this hour has gone around
And I'm gone on the rising tide
For to face Van Diemen's land

It's a bitter pill I swallow here
To be rent from one so dear
We fought for justice and not for gain
But the magistrate sent me away...

Lyrics from Van Diemen's Land

Wellington Viaduct in the Nilgiri Mountain Railway Lane near Ooty, Tamil Nadu (India)

The Mountain Railways of India are outstanding examples of hill railways. Opened between 1881 and 1908 they applied bold and ingenious engineering solutions to the problem of establishing an effective rail link across a mountainous terrain of great beauty. They are still fully operational as living examples of the engineering enterprise of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
