Suspension bridge over the river Lematang between Pagar Batu and Lahat, Sumatra (Indonesia)

I stand in the stillness of twilight.
A gliding seagull skims the foam
While mangroves bow loose-dangling crowns
Over jellyfish bellying up with the tide.

The wind, returning, scoops the earth,
Raises golden spray as it buffets the bay,
Runs up to the lonely mountain peak
Then swings through the top of the forest.

"In the year 1225, in order to protect the capital from attacks, there was formerly a chain, stretched over the Musi River. This chain could be raised or lowered by an ingenious device. Late, after many years of peace, when the chain was no longer necessary, it was in deposited in the river bank where for a long time it was a veneration among the natives"
