Wuhan First Yangtze Bridge over the Yangtze River in Wuhan, Hubei (China)

I often come here, the Hanyang Gate,
When I’m in deep despair
Having nowhere else to go
There're usually many people gathered
Under the bridge to watch the scene
Now as before, the big river flows east
The sound of the waves resonates in me
But few people can hear it

From the poem Spring Comes to Hangyang Gate
by Zhang Zhihao

Edward Rydz-Śmigły Marshall Bridge over the Vistula River in Wloclawek, Kuyavia (Poland)

One doesn't leave a soldier's grave with a broken soul. One doesn't leave with a sense of defeat and hopelessness, but with the unshakable conviction that a new spiritual value has emerged, a value not mine, not yours, but of us all—a value belonging to the entire nation. Their memory must endure and live on forever. In our schools, children should learn the names of those who died in their own community or town. This should be included in the curriculum and be the first lesson they learn about Poland...

Jacques Cartier Bridge over the Saint Lawrence River in Montreal, Quebec (Canada)

"The great river which flows through and waters the midst of these lands of yours, which is without comparison the largest river that is known to have ever been seen."

Jacques Cartier about St Lawrence River

Painting of the Railway Bridge over the Gaoping River between Kaoshiung and Pintung in Taiwan

Tailing the dusk
Quietly creeping up from behind to enfold me, wrap around me
An incomplete moon hangs lonely in the sky
Reflected in the reed-tangled bed of the stream
The surface of the stream as clear as the glass in a mirror
With now and then a floating wisp of white cloud
And the shadows of birds crying softly as they skim the water ….

From the poem Solitude
by taiwanese poet Chou Meng-tieh

DuSable Bridge or Michigan Avenue Bridge over the Chicago River in Chicago, Illinois (United States)

"Chicago would not be what it is today if it weren't for DuSable's decision to settle here at the site of this bridge. He is the founder of this city and his work jumpstarted a small trading post into a global metropolis"

Senator Dick Durbin
about renaming of Michigan Avenue bridge in 2010

Bridge over the Elbe River in Lauenburg, Schleswig-Holstein (Germany)

Wir hier an der Elbe
Sind zu Haus am selben Fluss
Fahrn hinauf, hinab
Fahren hin und her
Und er weiß, wohin er fließen muss
Ins große Meer
We here on the Elbe
Are at home on the same river
Drive up, down
Drive back and forth
And he knows where to flow
Into the big sea

Song by Rolf Zuckowski

Fujikawa Bridge over the Fuji River in the Shizuoka prefecture (Japan)

A summer river:
disdaining the bridge,
my horse gallops through water.

Vivekananda Setu or Bally Bridge crossing the Hugli River in Calcutta (India)

Warm noon's joy spreads under the big leaved trees
Beyond the garden hedge,
The honeysuckle waves in the grey wind
On the wrought iron gate.

And in my eyes this lovely picture goes
With me as I fare along the lane.
Piano-notes, unmindful on the wind
Fill the spring sky with pain.
Along a lane in South Calcutta.

Legions of Marshal Pisludski Bridge over the Vístula River in Plock, Mazovia (Poland)

Hey, long live our native tongue,
Our beautiful language,
Which, just like the eternal Wisła,
Flows from Kraków.

Pont Saint-Pierre over the Garonne River in Toulouse (France)

A force de regarder le ciel
nous faisons boiter
l'infini
qui ne s’arrête pas de marcher
comme un mendiant aveugle
La nuit lui donne parfois
sans nous
la monnaie d’une étoile
La beauté qui se perd
nous aime toujours
de nous
avoir perdu

Poeme from Serge Pey,
poet from Toulouse

Mactan-Mandaue Bridge over the Mactan Channel between the Cebu Island and the Mactan Island (Philippines)

It is said in the Mactan Island that Lapu-Lapu, the chieftain who resist the spanish invader, did not die or that at least nobody ever saw him die and the islanders believe he has been turned into a stone and is forever guarding the seas of Mactan. Fishermen in the island city point to a stone shaped like a man in the deep and they throw coins at it as a way of asking permission to fish in the chieftain’s seas.

Waibaidu Bridge crossing the Suzhou Creek in Shanghai (China)

Looking east, one could see the warehouses on the waterfront of Pootung like huge monsters crouching in the gloom, their lights twinkling like countless tiny eyes. To the west, one saw with a shock of wonder on the roof of a building a gigagntic neon sign in flaming red and phosphorescent green: LIGHT, HEAT, POWER.

Old Bridge over the Canal de la Robine in Narbonne, Pyrénées Orientales (France)

Personne ne me remarque,
Je passe en deux villes
Et soudain je débarque

Sur les barques tranquilles.
La rue du Pont m'accueille
Et, gentiment, me dit :
"Tu vois, les jours s'effeuillent,
Adieu, mon vieux petit !"

From Narbonne mon amie

Faidherbe Bridge across the Senegal River in Saint Louis (Senegal)

La Venise Africaine
et son vieux pont Faidherbe
M'ont remis sur les pas
des puissantes Signares
Ces métisses élégantes,
voluptueuses, superbes
Hantent encore les balcons
de leurs tendres regards.

Bridge over the Puerco River near Alburquerque, New Mexico (United States)

Well if you ever plan to motor west
Just take my way that's the highway that's the best
Get your kicks on Route 66
Well it winds from Chicago to L.A.
More than 2000 miles all the way
Get your kicks on Route 66

Song by Rolling Stones
