BLACKHAWK in (almost) 3-D (1952)

The 3-D craze didn't hit the movies until 1953, and comics quickly jumped in. Along with real 3-D, comic book publishers experimented with some cheesy 3-D without glasses techniques (some of which you may have seen on this blog) that never quite did the job. But here, a whole year earlier, is a piece with many panels that almost make the grade. Most issues of Blackhawk from this period featured stories by both Reed Crandall and Bill Ward (doing his best Crandall impression). This one is uncredited, but looks to me like one of the Wards.

Yeah, it's another Torchy adventure made possible by our friends at comicbookplus. The September 1946 issue of Modern Comics was uploaded to that site by a guy known as freddyfly.

Torchy's second comic book adventure comes to us from Doll Man Quarterly #9, Summer 1946. It was uploaded to the magnificent comicbookplus by Henry Peters. Words and pictures on this one are believed to be by Torchy's creator, Bill Ward.

INTRODUCING TORCHY by Bill Ward (1946)

This is Torchy's first comic book appearance, from Doll Man Quarterly #8, Spring 1946, uploaded to comicbookplus by Henry Peters (thanks Henry!). Art and story by Bill Ward, who created the character for an Army newspaper strip in 1944.
