Moments in Paperback History: LANCECON 1991

What it was all about: Books.

And more books.

You get the idea.

The King of Paperbacks, also King of the Barbecue.

Frank Portwood with Jessica Rabbit
(she's not bad, she's just drawn that way).

Misters Napier and Tayor chew the fat.

Misters Paschelke and Tayor chew the fat.

Misters Wald and Taylor chew the fat.

A rare moment. Misters Philips and Wald chew the fat without Mister Taylor.

Inscription: Thanks for buying my book instead of Marcia's.

The Casebeer basement (or maybe the upstairs - they look the same).

The Casebeer upstairs (the window is the giveaway).

The Casebeer dining room, aka Marilyn shrine.

The Casebeer living room. What? No books?

Auctioneer Wald holds the audience in thrall.

The audience, in thrall.

Like dang near all the other LanceCons, this took place in Lance Casebeer's backyard here in once-beautiful (now trashed) Portland, Oregon. Thanks again to the man hiding behind the camera - Mr. Art Scott!

RAMBLE HOUSE Books by Francis M. Nevins

My friend Larry Paschelke (who, in case it slipped your mind, is our benefactor in our weekly EQMM presentations) has long been an admirer of the critical work of Francis M. Nevins, and Anthony Boucher, too. So when he saw these books on a list of Ramble House publications, he had to add them to his collection.

Larry ordered the hardcover editions, and I was privileged to examine and admire both. These are beautifully made books, far nicer than I would have expected, and the contents look swell, too. I encourage you to check out the impressive array of other books they have available at http://www.ramblehouse.com/

TOM CORBETT, SPACE CADET Comic Strip Week 7 (1951)

Cap'n Bob has been on the edge of his seat all week, and it was cruel of me to make him wait for this installment, but heck -- it was fun! Thanks once again to Larry Paschelke for the strips. You can read them from the beginning HERE

TOM CORBETT, SPACE CADET Comic Strip Week 4 (1951)

More strips clipped from Portland newspapers by young Larry Paschelke. According to online sources, the first six months of the Sunday strip did not follow the continuity of the the dailies. This first adventure, known as "The Mercurian Invasion," ran 14 weeks, so we won't see the dailies and Sundays integrated for awhile.

Catch up on the first four weeks HERE
