Relics: The Horror!!!! New C'thu Preview

Just a quick post from me today, Tor Gaming have released another art preview for the upcoming C'thu faction:

Now as a pack of squid-dogs go these look very funky, the name reminds me of the Hounds of Tindalos from Lovecrafts Cthulhu Mythos which could move through dimensions and come out of right angles to hunt their prey if memory serves... hopefully these will have some form of unique movement or deployment trait too :-D

Spotlight: The Lowdown on Tor Gaming

Big things are happening in the world of Relics, news of an exiting new project has gradually filtered out from Tor Towers! I have managed to prise owner Gavin Moorcroft away from the grindstone to give us the lowdown on what's going on:

Over the last 12 months we have seen many new projects coming out of Tor Towers including TGC
and gamingfunder, what has been the main drive behind such projects?

Ants in my pants I think! Seriously, my head is spinning with ideas for this and that. If I don’t explore them then I will likely go mad. On top of this, my business partner (Colin) is also a similar type chap and he likes to get his hands dirty and loves to code so it just makes perfect sense for us to explore these ideas. In addition, each of the projects is designed to bring in some residual revenue that goes to sustaining us and means we can put that money into other thing like Tor Gaming and other products. It means we won’t have to rely on solely Tor Gaming to support us which should, in theory make things easier for us....

The kickstarter campaign early last year was very successful, funding a lot of new releases for the four factions, how did you find the whole process?

It’s similar to any other project management situation – but with the added element that you have to be a lot more open about progress. Most projects that go on in companies are closed door events. The only progress the people outside the company see is what the company want them to see. With Crowd funding, you are really opening your doors to every one of the backers. This makes you think more about the decisions you make as you now have a whole load of people who can stand up and call bullshit on what you do! But, I actually find that a bonus not a boon as it means you can’t take the short cuts. I also like the fact I have a lot of people to provide feedback and really help guide the project because they have put their money on the table so why shouldn’t they?

How long do we have to for gamingfunder campaign? Will it be similar to the ks one in that each goal will fund a release for each faction?

The GamingFunder.com project is scheduled to go live on the 5th May 2014. We have set the initial target quiet low and it covers the Gaming Funder Exclusive Mercenary sculpt and the new Portal Terrain piece we are producing. Then, each stretch goal will add two new packs of models, with two factions getting one pack each from that stretch goal. The factions are paired as Britanan/Orcnar and Nuem/Vaettir. So, one stretch goal will provide a new pack for the Brits and Orcnar, and then the next stretch goal will cover the Nuem and Vaettir. Then back to the Brits and Orcnar. Rinse and repeat.

There has been plenty of talk and interest regarding new factions for Relics; the C'thu and the Ridend, are you planning to bring them to life with this campaign?

We did think about it be decided we didn’t want this project to get swapped with too much work for the sculptor. As such, we plan on running separate campaigns for them in the near future, with the Ridend up first. That way, those campaigns can be very focused and deliver 100% what the backers want with each and every stretch goal. We also felt it would do them an injustice to have them lumped in with the existing factions. The new boys deserve to have the spotlight all to themselves!

We have recently seen Christian's concepts and Kev's WIP of the "Banished Knight", the first mercenary model for Relics, he looks fantastic by the way, can we infer there will be more of them coming soon?

You can and there will. Relicia is a massive place, far larger than our own globe and as such the numbers of nations that inhabit it are countless. The current four nations, and the two to come are just a pebble dropped in an ocean when compared with the potential we can explore for new Relicia nations. But that costs money. Some nations can be as big as the current playable nations and number in hundreds of thousands (or even millions) in populace whilst some number just thousands and have no standing army.

Each time you develop a new nation (faction) for a game, you have to invest a lot of money, time and effort in the process and at the end of it there is no guarantee it will be received well by the players.

As such, the plan behind the Relics Mercs is for them to be a vehicle for us to try out some of these new nation ideas we have without having to spend the full cost of investment in time and money to do so. Each Merc will represent a new potential nation in the world of Relics. And any Mercs that are very popular with the players will be looked at with a possibility of having a fully playable force created for them. But, the long term behind the Mercs is for them to become a fully playable force themselves! Once we have enough options out for them, we will do some commander Mercs – turning the force into a playable army of it’s own!

What else can we expect from the campaign for the existing factions? Any new profiles on the
horizon?

The initial target of the project is to fund the production cost of the new Portal Terrain piece and to fund the project exclusive model. Then, if successful enough the project will fund ALL the remaining profiles from the existing book plus Lingering Effects pebble counters and Faction Objective Markers. If we manage that, we will then hit new, unseen profiles for all the four factions such as the Orcnar Shaman and the Nuem Brazen Bull. We have a good number of profiles in reserve so we should be fine if we busts through all the existing profiles!

How are plans going for another tournament?

It’s on the list but with the project about to kick off we aren’t rushing it!  One of the biggest issue we are facing with the idea of the next official run tournament is location. Since the last event, we asked for a lot of input about events and travel distance as we felt the previous location wasn’t best suited for good enough coverage of the UK. Seems we were right as a very large proportion of people weren’t willing to travel more than 2 hours max for an event. Although the limit of 2hours max did surprise us a little and that makes picking a location that suits the most people even harder.

Best of luck for the campaign, I will be covering it heavily of course on the blog and my step son
and I will be backing it to expand our Orcnar and Nuem armies! Thanks for your time Gav cheers

Many thanks for taking the time to send in you questions! And many many more thanks for committing to back the project and help support us! We very much appreciate the support of the Relics fans much more than you may believe!

Thanks,

Gavin

Relics: Jacob's Orcnar

My stepson Jacob like's playing with little plastic n metal men just like me, he has armies for warpath and he bought himself an Orcnar starter set to learn to play Relics against my Nuem. I was involved in the kickstarter campaign and pledged a decent amount of money to help get the new models developed, and when the Ruina failed to unlock as some people pulled out, I used the money allocated for them to get him some reinforcements for his boys..... and he has finally finished painting them!

Commanders - Beorn and two Niwans

Docgas

Eiotan Rifans

Grymann

He has 3 more Unnmanns comin from Cymbeline games this week, when they arrive and painted he'll have a 400pt force! Nice one little man!

Tor Gaming Expo done and dusted!

Yesterday was the Tor Gaming Expo at Tabletop Nation, and many eager gamers turned up bright and early for opening and setting up. The tables were all laid out and Gav setup the studio minis and trophies for display:

Game 1 was against Kasper, a nice Danish champ using Britanans. Kasper had played about as many as i had so we made the best of it and muddled through! I got some early kills on his marksmen and lost a couple on paenitentiam, but the game turned when he fluffed his kings anger spell and the tormentas gacked his RAG in my next activation. the rest of the game was a bit of a mopping up as my heavy guns reaped a toll on his puppets.... the game ended with one wounded CSM left!

Game 2 versus Carl and his Britanans, one central objective that we scored points for holding each turn. Like my Game against Kasper, Carl's guns were unable to get through my armoured Nuem, only a few paens fell on the approach to the objective! At dice down on turn 6, i had reduced carl's force to 3 puppets and a CSM, having had much better dice when i needed them though out the entire game!

Game 3 was the decider against Tom, one of the early play testers for the game and his Vaettir. Tom was also undefeated at this stage so it was on this game that the tourney would be decided. Luckily for me the dice gods were shining on the Nuem and the thinly armoured fairies succomed to the guns hehe. I'd managed to clear the flanks but was held in the centre grinding my 4 dedicatus against 2 vistonins, both unable to finish off the other, and on turn 6 i was able to capture tom's objectives near his back field.

After the dust had cleared, Rob worked out the final points, and it was time to present some awards! Kasper got the spoon after 3 crushing defeats but he took it with good humor and grace... Gav offered him a starter box for any other faction to help improve his luck haha. Christine rightly won best painted armies and single model, the effects on her cloaks and armour were brilliant! Second place went to Carl after he crushed Christine's Nuem for some payback, learning quickly to snipe exposed Pueri's who glue the force together!

But first place flukely went to me after three cracking games and three hard fought victories! As well as my amazing trophy plaque i picked up a Britanan starter set and im eager to build them up and expand the force to a smiliar size as my Nuem.

My trophy plaque, to take pride of place in my new display cabinet, hopefully the first of many as i will definitely be back to defend my title at future events! Many thanks to Gav from Tor Gaming, and Rob from 4tkgaming for organising an awesome days gaming, cheers gents!

More Nuem!

Well one at least, a third Specialis Pueri, this will round my army out to 600pts when the rest of the kickstarter goodies come in a few months.

Im seriously tempted to add another unit of paenitentiam or two to my collection as jammers for large games a bit later one. I will have sufficient robots with the concursus and medicae to arrive, but some more cheap bodies to fill out the ranks would be good.

Hopefully Tor will do another kickstarter at the end of the year, or at least a preorder system to finance the Ruina, the Prefectus and Equities to finish off the faction... i want 2 Ruina, 2 Prefectus and 6 Equities as soon as possible!

Friends and Relics

Two updates today!

First is a new blog by a friend of mine, Steve August at www.canadastevesminis.blogspot.co.uk. Steve is an old mate of the Chelmsford Bunker and is a founder member of JustAboutGames, a games club based out of Tabletop Nation in Hockley.

Steve has just started in the world of commission painting so i wanted to give him a help along by sharing his blogsite with everyone who checks out mine. Its early days at the mo, but im sure he'll have lots of interesting minis and articles for us all in due time.

The guys at JAG play a wide variety of games, some well known favs and other more niche systems like Carnevale and Relics... Its their fault i have so many Nuem!!!

Speaking of Nuem, here's the latest additions to my force:

Metus Dedicatus

2013 so far

Its a quiet night so i figured i'd go through the blog and sort out a progress report of the year so far:

I started the year with 138 models unpainted, and ive only got 66 left on that list left to go which is awesome progress i think. Ive picked up odd bits here and there along the way but im making sure this total is decreasing all the time.

Im working on my Halodyne starter set for Godslayer at the mo, i need to get this completed this week as ive been asked to run a demo event at Tolehaven in Romford in a week or so. When these are done i can then start on my Ito and Nuem reinforcements, both needed for upcoming events!

My Blindwater army was sold on when i new i couldnt make the masters in may, a shame but the needs must, and im not sure i will be expanding my spartan fleets anytime soon as other games have my prority for the time being and i have my new battleboard coming soon that has eaten a large chunk of available funds hehe

So all in all its been a good start to the year hobbywise, i'll do another round up over the summer to check how ive got on :-D
