Mitch Leigh recorded an original cast album in the hopes of finding a record company to press and distribute it.  Tapes of this recording were distributed to the members of the Tony Nominating committee to enhance the show's chances of being nominated.  The show was still passed over.

CHU CHEN was originally written and produced in 1966. It closed during pre-Broadway tryouts in Philadelphia.

The plot of the 1966 version, as described in William Torbert Leonard's "Broadway Bound: A Guide to Shows That Died Aborning":

Chu Chem, a wandering Jewish scholar, accompanied by his wife and daughter, is searching for a lost tribe of Jews in 11th century China. Prince Eagle, ruler of the Ming province of Kaifeng Fu, falls in love with Chem's daughter, Lotte, calling her "the woman of the future."  Mongol villain, Lord Hoo Hah, has dire predictions about the future of the province long cursed by a devastating draught.  Chu Chem puts on his prayer shawl to pray and there is suddenly rain from heaven.
