Notes: The music of the musical 'Belles de nuit' transports us back to 1946 and the twilight of France's infamous 'houses of prostitution', tolerated but now threatened with closure by the Marthe Richard Act . The songs here are poetic and full of tenderness and mischievousness in their portraits of the prostitutes, madams and pimps who made up this nocturnal underworld. Both lyrics and music are by composer, actor, singer and director Jonathan Kerr, who also plays an invaluable role in the musical. This album is driven by the songwriting and by these remarkable singers and musicians, all of whom show incredible precision in the way the authenticity of the French "chanson" genre blends with swing jazz.
