Kharn the Betrayer

Last week I did a Kharn the Betrayer commission for a friend of mine. Really a great kit to build and paint. My only complaint with it is the design of the legs. There is all this great detail, particularly the skulls on the knees, that look amazing and I spent alot of time on... for almost no reason. Because of the pose, they are pointed basically directly down, and he is on such a large base and at such an extreme angle, that even when you hold him upside down, you can't really see then.
Overall though, it is really well done kit. They have perfected dividing up sprues. Nearly every mold line is hidden along some glue point or by some detail. I still cleaned them all, but even if you miss one or it is imperfect, the chances of seeing it on the final product are extremely slim.

I also played with Focus Stacking photography last night (the black back ground picture). Probably what I am going to do from now on for EVERYTHING. That is once my new camera gets here Thursday!

Blood Bowl Ogre Team Complete

Here is a BB Ogre Team I did for Steve of the Podcast Both Down (Yes, THE BB Podcast Both Down).

I give you the Gnob Headz. Sorry for some rough photography. I was in a real rush to take these so I could get them mailed out before traveling...

Ugly model or ugliest model...
Okay, ugliest... and yes I painted that stain there on purpose...

Heroforge Miniatures Review - Schlemazal

I've been keeping an eye on Hero Forge Miniatures since their kickstarter went live. For those of you who haven't heard of them before, Hero Forge makes custom 3D-printed miniatures designed with a web interface where you can pick from libraries of parts (heads, torsos, limbs, weapons, armor, handheld items, etc) with options for fantasy, scifi, western, modern or east-asian genre styles and quite a few different poses.
A dwarven rogue I threw together using the Hero Forge interface.
Though their parts libraries aren't massive (yet), the concept always had me really interested, so when I was recently commissioned by a friend to paint a pair of Hero Forge minis, I figured it would be a good time to post my thoughts about the end product. Both miniatures were printed with their 'Ultra Detail Plastic' which boasts a good paintability and a high level of detail, but low durability (as opposed to their 'Strong Plastic', which is supposed to be much less detailed and rougher, but more durable. Also cheaper, though I haven't seen the end product).

Straight off the bat, I got to see that one-star durability in action. One miniature was posed with only one leg on the base, and it had snapped at the ankle in transit from the commissioner (I do want to stress this was not from the company, it was repackaged to send to me), requiring me to pin the leg. Later, a short tumble snapped the quarterstaff off, though some superglue easily repaired the problem. The detail held by the plastic was actually impressive, though the sculpts themselves are limited due to the fact that all the parts are meant to be modular and somewhat generic in their system. There was, however, definitely a rough surface texture to both models.

Spray primer worked just fine on the two, though a thinner layer is recommended or you start to lose what detail is present. Once primed, I had very little difficulty with painting. It was basically the same as working with any other wargaming miniature. The rough texture remained present throughout, though in the end I think the only place the models suffered for it were in the faces where a little roughness can make a huge difference in the final appearance.

Overall, I enjoyed working with these two miniatures. At $25 each, I think they're probably a bit too expensive for most applications - the rough surface, fragility, and the medium level of detail born of modular parts work against the customization for value. While Hero Forge has a cheaper plastic variant, given the roughness present in their higher end material, I'm not really sure I want to see what those look like. That being said, if you're looking for a miniature for an RPG character and can't find one that fits, or you need a specific set of weapons, gear and posing, Hero Forge is definitely a solid choice. Hopefully they'll continue to build their parts library and increase the level of detail they can manage.

I'll leave you here with some more pictures of the completed miniatures:
This is labeled as the 'Come at me bro' pose. Bonus points for style.
The bamboo flooring base was really well made

Commission up for sale: Chaos Daemons

If you want the soul grinder I did a while back as a commission for some one, well you can get it. The guy is selling all his daemons in favour of his Space wolves.

Nurgle Soul Grinder
Daemon Army

If you want some commission work done, email me at SepulchreofHeroes@gmail.com. I'll do conversion work easily, but don't have too much time for painting commissions (I am slow enough with my own stuff). I'll paint a handful, but preferably not much. Sorry. And I can only have a limited number of projects, so if you want it, don't wait.

Scabeiathrax (Forge World Great Unclean One) Commission

Well here is the finished painted Scabeiathrax (the Forge World Great Unclean One) for my friend. It needs some work around the base, but that will be taken care of when he decides what to base his Nurgle Demon army.

EDIT UPDATE WITH EDITED PICTURES!!!

What is really unique about this is I actually used a bunch of Walmart brand paints. I didn't have the paints I needed to do the skin, so the guy lent me his. Sage green mixed with a dark brown of some sort got the look I was going for, with a develan mud wash and a straight up sage green/sage green skull white blend for highlighting (drybrushing).

The Decaying areas where done by putting the same colour as the flesh tone in, then brown ink, then asurmen blue wash around the edge and golden/sunburst yellow drybrushing.

All in all he was fun to do and actually took maybe around a third of the time it took for me to do my banner for my blood angels. Large models I guess are just very forgiving that way.

Note, the very bright spot on his nose isn't actually there. That is just something weird in the photo. Sorry.

Necromunda: Spyrer Gang Commission, My Arbites List

So my club, the Wargamers at Georgia Tech, is starting up Necromunda this semester.

I am playing Arbites. My gang consists of the following:
All have Knives and Choke Gas Grenades
Leader: Power Maul and Suppression Shield
Handler: Power Maul and Suppression Shield
Heavy: Heavy Stubber, Bolt Pistol
Enforcer: Plasma Gun, Bolt Pistol
Enforcer: Power Maul and Suppression Shield
Enforcer: Power Maul and Suppression Shield
Enforcer: Shotgun, Bolt Pistol
Enforcer: Shotgun, Bolt Pistol
Enforcer: Shotgun, Bolt Pistol
Enforcer: Bolt Pistol, Melta Bomb, Photon Flash Flares
Cyber Mastiff

Next is the gang I was commissioned to do for another player.
I made the Spyrer gang for around $50 in parts, which is far less than if you just bought the GW models, which would come in at $85.

I used Eldar bodies (4 guardians and 1 dire avenger exarch) for their torsos. The two Orrus have modified SM legs (cut off the square butts). The others all have guardian legs.

The Orrus, Yeld and Malcadon all have SM Scout heads. The Jakara has an Eldar head made to look a little more feminine to match the female guardian body.

Orrus weapons are SM Powerfists with bolt pistol barrels underneath to represent the bolt launchers.

The Malcadon has SM Combat knives as the claws and guitar string as the power cables.

The Yeld utilizes a dire avenger exarch arm for its pistol (ammo clip removed). His wings are made from Dark Angels Ravenwing bike cowls. I used 2 sets, thinned them down and glued them back to back so both sides look like wings without being too thick.

The Jakara has a Dire Avenger Exarch sword and a terminator shoulder pauldron sheild for her mirror sheild.
See the GW ones here.
