Planetary Empires/Mighty Empires: Expansions that Need to Return

Remember these sets?
I really really wish I had bought them back in the day. They cost an arm and a leg on Ebay now and no one is selling them really. Why? Because they are still infinitely useful and cool, so who would want to get rid of them?

If anything, they are more useful and cool now than every before. That is because each core game has 3 methods to play, one of which happens to be NARRATIVE. There is nothing more narrative than a well organized campaign, and a map based one at that. I really wish I could play in one. Add to that the Crusade system in 40k AND you are just begging for a reason to do campaigns.

And then there are specialist games too. Adeptus Titanicus and Aeronautica Imperialis both lend them selves well to a map based campaign system, Titanicus in particular. And then the big daddy of Horus Heresy itself. All of these games expansions ARE campaign books.

Heck, with some ingeniuty and clever hobbying, you could even make a great underhive map for Necromunda, allowing you to track gang territory and add some depth and realism to raids and the game as a whole.

The potential to work these into supplements, like they used to with WHFB with things like Blood in the Badlands, is incredibly high.

They would also make the perfect feature for a set of articles over the course of several issues of White Dwarf, and could cover multiple aspects of the hobby, from modeling your map to playing the campaign. And then these would be the perfect tool to utilize to introduce fun new narrative based rules, stratagems and mini campaign in both White Dward and Chapter Approved or the General's Handbook.  Environmental and Warzone type rules are the most obvious, giving in game effects for fighting in a jungle or a rad desert, ice wastes or an urban sprawl.

It would be even cooler if then there were faction specific or bonus tiles sold in specific kits. Special tile in a White Dwarf. Faction tile in a start collecting box. Manufactorum tiles in the 40k terrain kit. Civitas tile in Titanicus Terrain. Etc. Etc. You get the picture. Give people a reason and desire to get a full set of tiles in their Planetary/Mighty Empires expansion, and then reward people with those expansions for continuing to purchase GW kits and armies.

There is just a ton of reasons why this should happen and none why it shouldn't.

Now I understand there are plenty of 3d printing options out there for these, and that really is a great solution if you want a table. But in terms of full support it is lacking. I really believe the modern GW could really maximize their supplements with a tool like this, just flushing out campaign rules and providing even greater reasons to use things like the Crusade System.

And there is a PERFECT opportunity coming up for GW to bring this system back, as there is game coming with a locked map, with factions tied to specific regions, and the greatest potential for meaningful, impactful campaign play. I am of course talking about

Imagine setting up your Empire Map and fighting off the forces of Archaon coming from the North, or challenging other players for control of the Border Princes. Think of purging woodlands of Chaos Beastman or marching out to besiege a Dwarven hold.

C'mon GW. This is basically a money printer for you guys. Easy to produce cheaply, yet highly desirable and useable by many many hobbyists. The fact there are so many 3d printing options out there for it only reinforces that it is a desirable commodity. So what are you waiting for?

King of the Jungle- Old Blood on Carnosaur Showcase

I love Lizardmen. Note, Lizardmen, not Seraphon. The old lizard lore was so cool, and the way they worked before AoS way more interesting to me (if I wanted to play a summoning game, I would have picked Daemons). SO for me, that means my Lizard force is going to be built to WHFB 8th Edition, The Ninth Age and Kings of War. I may use them occasionally in AoS, but my opponent would have to be cool with Square Bases. My Tamurkhan's Horde army will be for AoS. My lizards are going to be for Rank and File battle games.

It has been a LONG TIME coming, but I am finally making this army.

With that said, I finally finished the my first complete Lizard of my own army. The Carnosaur kit is just such a cool kit, and I loved every minute of making this model.

Starting AoS: Tamurkhan's Horde First Steps

So I've decided to make the plunge. I am starting an AoS army. Why now? Well AoS 2.0 seemed to relaunch a lot of interest. I also move alot and have an active AoS community where I currently live. Figured having an army I could use would only be a good thing.

PICKING AN ARMY
I wanted something relatively small, but unique in the meta and fun on the table top and to hobby. When the Tamurkhan's Horde pdf for AoS dropped, I knew it was perfect for me. I wanted something that would be fun and quick to build and paint, and I've always had fun painting Nurgle units. The Horde is a very assault oriented army with a rapid movement forward (I am a Blood Angel's player at heart), and it is unique and gimmicky (like my horse army). It is a perfect opportunity for some conversions along side some sweet forgeworld models. Bonus, the army is relatively low model count and isn't super competitive, so I don't have to worry about changing it or keeping it optimal. Sometimes it will hit like a ton of bricks and break people. Other times it won't. And I'm okay with that. This army truly is purely for the fun of it.
To sum up, Tamurkhan's Horde checks all the boxes I was looking for, so I went with it. I am already working on a 9th Age/WHFB 8th Ed Lizardmen Army and endless summoning doesn't seem like my bag, so Seraphon was kinda out. Chaos Dwarves were just TOO Expensive, and Beast of Chaos didn't have a battletome... yet. More on that to come.

MAKING THE ARMY LIST
This list I finally settled on
So I started with one of the Battalions from the T-Horde pdf. But the most I thought about that the more I realized it stunk and was a waste of points. I know I said this army wasn't meant to be competitive, but I also don't want to intentionally make TERRIBLE choices when there are better options that are just as fluffy but way more useful AND have opportunities to be creative.

I knew I was going to include the Maggot Lord himself, Tamurkahn. What's the point of the army if you don't include him. Kazyk the Befould also seemed like a no-brainer, and I originally rounded them off with just a Sorceror.

I also knew I still wanted 18 Plague Ogors at the core with 3 Bile Troggoths. This is the basis of the battalion and seemed fun. Just the added battalion was useless. The debate came down to 3 units of 6 Ogors or a unit of 12 and a unit of 6. The first way gave me 3 battlelines, but fewer points to work with, while the 3rd method gave me only 2 battleline meaning I would need a 3rd, but saved me some significant points with the full unit discount.

Knowing that I started looking around for another battleline... which at first only left me with marauders and warriors. Neither of these choices ever really excited me. I really wanted plague monks, but they were only battle line for Clan Pestilens. BUT looking into them made me realize how WORTH IT a Plague Priest with Plague Censer was in my army, so my characters grew by one and left me with a measly 160 points.
Beastmen from the Throne of Chaos book
At NOVA I had already procured my Ogor models and I had at this point basically resigned myself to just doing 20 marauders and an endless spell for the remaining points. And then Beast of Chaos dropped. And while I couldn't get Nurgle Marked beasts or pestigors into that 160 point slot, I COULD fit 20 normal gors, and these instantly excited me more. One, I had been considering Beasts of Chaos BEFORE picking T-Horde. Two, they are fast and assaulty and fit PERFECT with the theme of the Horde, even if they aren't especially boosted by its abilities. BUT that was really a third part of the attraction. They make the perfect unit that can operate OUTSIDE the command influence of my characters and can serve as objective holders, speed bumps or tarpit. And they were exactly 160 points. All the more perfect. The only debate I still have out on them is do I go with 2 units of 10 or one large unit of all 20. I feel some playtesting is required there.

MAKING THE MODELS
I managed to snap up 18 Ogor bodies and some random bags of weapons bits for cheap at the NOVA Open from the Toledo Game Room (the bestest most amazing vendor on the planet). With that purchase made, some cool old chaos bits I had, and some green stuff, I went to town.
And now to start painting!
Still have a ways to go, but it is a start and pretty fun so far from a creativity perspective.

GW and the Summer of Oversaturation

Games Workshop has oversaturated us. Their stocks are skyrocketing. Their business is on the up and up. The product release train just won't stop. But if they are not careful, they will become Icarus, and fly too close to the sun, and I think a few games will suffer for it.
"What are you talking about Gothmog? This is a great time. So much cool stuff!"

Yes. But can you afford it? Most of us probably can't. And that's fine for a lot of people. But not for GW. And not for the business model they are pushing.

Lets break it down. This "Summer" we have seen

  • Idoneth Deepkin (really back in spring, but it was a rather large release I feel)
  • Age of Sigmar 2.0 and a new General's Handbook
  • Malign Sorcery
  • New Storm Cast Subfaction
  • Essentially a new Nighthaunt faction
  • Imperial Knights codex
  • Dominus Knights
  • Armiger Knights
  • Rerealease of Renegade
  • Kill team and all its releases
  • New Terrain for 40k
  • Chaos BB team,  a new SPIKE supplement, and more accessories
  • Dark Elf BB team, a new SPIKE supplement, and more accessories
  • Cawdor Gang, a new Gang War supplement, upgrade kits and more accessories

ANNOUNCED AND YET TO BE RELEASE

  • Titanicus (a whole new game)
  • LotR Relaunch w/ the Pellenor Feilds box set (might as well be a new game)
  • Space Wolves Codex
  • Orks Codex
  • Genestealer Cults Codex
  • Kill Team Rogue Trader

That's a lot. And I'm not convinced I didn't miss anything. I am sure I did and someone will say something in the comments.

That's 4 or 5 "new games" (I'll explain), an expansion, 3 supplements, 9 new factions/subfactions and a several box sets costing over $100 USD (and a few near or over $200!)

Can your wallet handle it?

So while some of these are small, they sell to usually fanatics of their chosen game, and sell well. Necro and BB have tight but hardcore followings, and a lot of those players collect numerous teams/gangs. There are people that actually try (and accomplish!) to do all 24 teams in 24 tournaments for BB. Crazy right?!

Now for the Factions. New factions means new armies. Full, big, expensive, time intensive armies. And gone are the days of plain SM or simple skeletons. These things are gorgeous and full of detail. Which means they typically take longer to paint IMO. But the effort is besides the point. A new army just costs a lot. Especially when one of those armies is IMPERIAL KNIGHTS. These things are sweeping the meta in 40k. And they are available to more than just dedicated knight players. And with that release came 2 MAJORLY EXPENSIVE kits- the Dominus and Renegade. Now while Renegade is quite a savings if you are going to buy 2 knights (plus an awesome piece of terrain), it is still $195 USD MSRP. That's a pretty penny, even if you get it 20% off someplace. These are all large and expensive models and are going to put a dent in anyone's wallet who wants one (or 5).

Lets discuss. In this I see a few "new games". So really they aren't all "new". What I mean by this is a core release for a system designed to essentially build a player base from the ground up, or at least massively expand it. AoS 2.0, Kill Team, Titanicus, Pellenor Feilds and possibly Rogue Trader are ALL designed and intended to do this.
Lets start with a GW flagship. AOS 2.0, especially when combined with Malign Sorcery, really has seemed to energize a lot of new players and was designed and timed to bring A LOT of new blood into the game, particularly hobbyists that just hadn't dipped their toe in yet (I know I have an army planned now and am just waiting for NOVA to browse the amazing Toledo game room for conversion fuel). So you have a lot of people starting new Armies, and along with that there are 3 new fresh factions that even veteran AoS players are grabbing. Even more so with Stormcast players who really just expand with a whole new chamber. And on top of that everyone was/is picking up an $80 kit of bad ass spells (those jaws are so sweet).

Kinda a new game, kinda just 40k lite, we have Kill Team. And while you can just use your 40k models, what always sells with kill team is TERRAIN. LOTS OF IT. Beautiful BUT EXPENSIVE. And a lot of people always seems to start a new hobby project of a cool converted kill team (as they should).

I am unsure as of yet what Rogue Trader really is. Is it part of kill team? Is it it's own thing? IDK (thus 4 or 5 games) Is it just a board game with models to port into other games, like Execution Force, Burning for Prospero, Battle of Calth, Gorechosen, Space Hulk etc. etc. If so not to concerning for long term support, but still thats probably going to be a $150 USD game with a new faction for some other game (be it Kill team or 40k or both)
Another new game that isn't new but might as well be: LotR/Pellenor feilds. It is a really cool looking relaunch of the game and really seems aimed at getting a lot of people back into it. That core set is bait to get us to get MORE NEW FACTION, and I have seen a lot of hype for it. What is most exciting is it consolidates the plethora of source material for the game out there and makes that weird distinction between LotR and Hobbit go away. Its all just "Middle Earth" now, and that is great.

Last but not least, Titanicus. At a whopping $290 for the Grandmaster Edition starter, this is a LARGE investment. A Titanic one if you mind the pun. And its a whole new game, at a whole new scale, so there will only be MORE releases to come AND it requires its own, uniquely scaled terrain.

So as you can see, that's a lot. And really, its a lot of $$$. A LOT.

The problem as I see it is 3 fold

  • GW has crammed too many flashy new releases too close together, giving us little time to get past the hype of one and into the hype of the next. Ideally, you would wait for the hype of a new flashy release to start dying off and then BAM hit us with a new one. But if people are still playing and excited by the new Kill Team, why are they going to bother with Titanicus or Pelenor Feilds?

  • Too many EXPENSIVE releases too close together. Some of these kits are MASSIVELY expensive. You may get great savings in them, but still, a new Start Collecting box, malign sorcery, Renegade and a Dominus knight, kill team and some new terrain and now you are a already over $500+ dollars. And that is BEFORE Titanicus and Pellenor fields even release, 2 new games intended to draw in ENTIRELY NEW PLAYER BASES.
  • AND THEY DID IT ALL DURING THE SUMMER! Summer is already super expensive. I have to pay for increased electricity bills (AC ain't cheap), activities for the kids, vacation, buying back to school supplies for the kids. There is just a lot of REAL WORLD demands on people's finances this time of year. In the end, if people can't afford to dive into what GW's peddling while the hype is still there, people probably won't play it.

My ultimate point here- If there is too much to buy, something won't be bought. And that means a release will FAIL. And you do not want new GAMES to fail. Their business model is centered around games being SUSTAINABLE

To me, this hurts Titanicus the most, and to a lesser extent LotR. The advantage LotR has is 90% of the catalog of models for the game ALREADY EXISTS. There is already a playerbase (small yes, but enthusiastic for sure). And it has a hook for people NOT already in the Hobby, and can share terrain with other games (AoS, historicals, other fantasy games, and even sci-fi games like 40k). However, it is following EVERYTHING and people are going to be stretched thin and may just not have the money to buy it. And if it has a poor launch, that ultimately hurts longevity.

Titanicus DOES NOT have ANY of those advantages that LotR has though. It is 100% new. New scale. New terrain. New models. New playerbase. On top of that, its kinda ticked off some hardcore vets by being a  new scale, set solely in Horus Heresy (so no Xenos in the foreseeable future) and thereby incompatible with old Epic players or people not interested in Imperial Pattern God Machines. As a 40k/30k port, it really doesn't hold the attraction to people outside the hobby that Lord of the Rings has. So it is banking off and existing base of enthusiastic hobbyists diving in...

At a $290 price point.
GW... as I pointed out people have already spent over $500 this summer on your stuff. Where do you think $300 FOR A STARTER is coming from. Its an instant turn off for A LOT OF PEOPLE. Especially when they know they will need MORE UPGRADES (as there is only 1 weapons loadout) and MORE TITANS (Warhounds haven't even been previewed). And this means even FEWER players. Oh, and there is the fact I need MORE TERRAIN and can't cross it with anything else really (maybe some obscure games like polyversal. Maybe dropzone. But overall, nothing really. Not nearly the utility of all the other games).

Lastly, people are just DYING for the last of the 40k codicies at this point. There are indicators that we will see the first of them (Orks? Fingers crossed) by the end of the month. There are people that are just going to hold off COMPLETELY on current purchases hoping that their faction will release soon.

What, in my own humble opinion, should have been done differently OVERALL

  • The AoS 2.0 release is fine. Started the summer with a bang. Good Deal.
  • Imperial Knights should have been followed up with CODEX ORKS and GSC. Give the XENOS players something to celebrate too. Invigorate the whole 40k community/meta. Plus give us 2 more codicies closer to completion
  • There are a lot of rumours involving Leman Russ returning surrounding the release of the SW codex. If that's true, that should have been lined up to be the end of summer release.

  • Release Kill teams in the wake of ALL the 40k codicies. All the factions (SoB excepting, but we know to be patient for them not) would be out, people would be interested in doing one for their faction, and be looking for terrain for their now COMPLETE EDITION OF THE GAME (minus sisters, yes, but as I said, we get it).
  • Chaos BB was fine. I would have waited a little longer for Dark Elves myself.
  • Why was Cawdor and Gand WarIV released RIGHT ON THE BACK OF KILL TEAM? Doesn't make a lick of sense. They are competing skirmish games. If GW was hoping to snag more necromunda players with a new Gang, they were all distracted by Kill Team and adding onto factions they already own. The two should have been distanced by at least a month IMO. Probably more. And I would have done Cawdor and Gang War first personally. Snag more necro players. Get them pumped about Skirmish. Then hit them with Kill team.
  • As much as its been hyped, TITANICUS and LotR should have been saved for the Fall. I would have done LotR first, sometime Mid-fall (early Oct-ish) after everyone has recouped from the summer and all the hype of all that new stuff from AoS and 40k has trailed off.

  • TITANICUS should have been the BIG Christmas Item. It is EXPENSIVE. Ride that excessive materialism time of year. People would be WILLING to spend $290 on it for a Christmas gift. You would get players who wouldn't buy it themselves, but WOULD ask for it.  FUTHERMORE the Horus Heresy novel that is tied in with it "Titandeath" releases in December! And the game has apparently had some production issues which is why there is no Warhound yet. Would have been nice to see that and more weapons options at release, which delaying could have allowed for.
  • There should be 2 Editions of the Game. The Grandmaster with 2 warlords. BUT there SHOULD have been a second set, with ALL THE SAME STUFF, except instead of 2 warlords, 2 REAVERS! What this would have done is set a lower price point for game entry. $290 is tough, no matter how good of a deal the box is over buying it individually. It is just A LOT OF MONEY. A $180-$210 starter with Reavers would have just been EASIER for people to manage, even if it is technically a lesser amount. FURTHERMORE people that want to go FULL ON into the game would have bought BOTH EDITIONS and have a full maniple RIGHT OFF THE BAT with enough terrain for a full game. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me.
  • GW should have made it MUCH CLEARER that the average game is only 3-4 titans (as Ive read in WD). I really don't see Titanicus being that big of an investment overall. You don't need alot to play. Just a really high start up cost. And a lot of people seemed to have missed that.

I really hope Titanicus and LotR do well in the long run. I would like to do both (but Forge World Dwarves are expensive too!) I can see Titanicus being a great game for Cons, and if you are worried about new players, get enough for you to always provide for 2 players (about 10 titans overall from what I've read) and just go to cons and play there. It will all be okay. BUT I think it is not as great as it COULD have been and it is all due to just too much too close together at too high of a cost.

Thoughts on Warhammer Adventures and why it upsets "Fans"

So Warhammer Adventures. Warhammer for kids. Specifically kids 8 to 12 years old.

Here is its pitch for 40k
And here is its pitch for AoS

Now I am not going to focus on fantasy, I'll really get to why I ignore it later, but fundamentally it comes down to the fact that in my opinion fantasy always has hope. The Grim-Dark Future does not.

Lets start with something you all are likely very familiar with: The intro of every 40k Black Library book.

"It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries The Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the Master of Mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die.

Yet even in his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the Warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever vigilant Inquisition and the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants - and worse.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods."

Now check this out. This is the Intro from Rogue Trader.
Very similar yes? Especially in the tone of it.

Really makes "Life is hard," in their pitch seem a wee bit of an understatement. I also don't get the vibe of "Adventure" to be had. More so "this is a nightmare you will not wake up from, sucks to be you." Definitely NOT the same tone and opportunity for adventure as presented in the Fantasy pitch.

But really I want to focus in on those last paragraphs in the BL and RT intros. You know, the ones that basically say you are no one. This is the worst of all possible worlds. There is no hope for a better tomorrow. Everything will only ever get worse.

And they that VERY last line in RT really adds something "But the Universe is a big place and, whatever happens, you will not be missed...."

To me THAT is Warhammer 40k. That IS THE GRIM DARK FUTURE. No. Hope.

I see a lot of people talking about the adult themes in Warhammer and whether those are appropriate or not for children. To me that is a non-issue. They obviously aren't going to delve into the depravity of Slaanesh for Pete's sake. And they don't need to. It is really easy to skirt around the most adult of content and still have a genuinely good and enriching Warhammer 40k story. Most of the current novels from Black Library do just that.
But none of them get around the despair of the universe. It is quintessential to the setting. It is a fundamental requirement. It is what gives everything the air of Grim Dark.

And to me this is what probably has a lot of people upset, even if they couldn't quite put their finger on it.

It is not that GW is trying to get kids interested in the Hobby at a younger age. It is that  they may be doing it at the expense of the setting, cheapening or distorting something they find so critical to that setting- hopelessness. This is why I personally don't mind the Age  of Sigmar Warhammer Adventures. I don't feel fantasy has ever been without hope. There has always seemed to be a promise of a better tomorrow, or a potential for improvement, or at least an ability to stave off inevitable doom. That promise now feels even closer than it did in the old world. Sigmar is a God! The Stormcast are Eternal! Its really embedded in the Fantasy genre IMO. The evil wizard is vanquished and tranquility is restored to the land. That may be grossly simplified, but the air of it is undeniably present in Fantasy. Things can get better. Its part of why fantasy is so great for escapism, particularly for young readers... say 8 to 12 years old.
See, to market a book to young readers like this they have to make it relatable so that escapism has the potential to occur, or the reader can at least empathize with the protagonists. Which is clearly what GW is attempting to do. I have no issue with the gender and racial diversity presented by their characters. It is a huge galaxy. It is going to be diverse. And everyone is clearly a teen or preteen as well. So clearly, they have attempted to go the route of "These characters could be you. Put yourself in their world."

And now we are to the crux of my argument.

We are asking 8 years old to step into a Galaxy where THEY DO NOT MATTER! Where you are less than nothing. Where everything is hopeless and YOU WILL DIE AND NO ONE WILL CARE!

And is that the message we want 8 years olds to get? The real world is hard enough. Childhood depression is a real thing. Hell, there are young kids that commit suicide. And sorry if that seems too harsh to say or you think its not relevant. I wish it didn't have to get mentioned, because no one should be committing suicide, let alone children. Buy it is real. And as such, hopelessness is the LAST thing you want to be presenting to kids, particularly since the hobby already tends to attract those of us with less social acumen and standing than others, the exact group most susceptible to depression. Some of these kids are already outcasts. Do we really want to have them escape to a world where what little meaning they have is actually nothing?

No. And I think GW/BL knows that. The Authors they have hired to write these books most certainty know that. Thank goodness. I honestly doubt the books WILL contain that message because it is so wholly inappropriate for children. I sure as heck hope they do not put the standard intro that talks about the laughter of the thirsting gods in it.

BUT that goes back to what I was saying, the universe is somewhat compromised without that message. SO in order to make the books socially acceptable and morally appropriate for kids, the setting must be modified.

And that is what is upsetting to some. GW says it won't affect anything. And sure, the main arc of characters we care about won't be affected at all. But the fact that a ray of sunshine, there is something RIGHT in the world at the end of the day DOES affect something. The universe is a little less grim. A little less dark. And while in reality that would be welcome, it is wholly against the core message of 40k: "In the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods."

All the above aside though, ultimately it doesn't affect us, the average hobbyist. We can simply ignore it the same way you ignore that one crap album from your favourite artist or the unsuccessful spin off from your favourite show. Cast it out as junk. We already do that with C.S. Goto novels.

Plus, she hates weapons? And can fix everything with learning?!?!? What in the name of the Emperor is this Heresy?!?!

Two final thoughts that weren't part of my initial drafts
1- Don't be one of the jerks out there harassing the Authors of these books. They are doing nothing more than the job they were hired to do. Until the books are released, I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they are treating the worlds we cherish so much with professionalism and dignity. I may disagree with the direction GW is taking by conceptually bringing forward children's books, but that has nothing to do with the authors. They aren't sitting is a chair laughing saying "TAKE THAT NECK BEARDS! I AM ACTIVELY TRYING TO RUIN YOUR HOBBY". In fact I am sure they are hoping for the exact opposite, where their stories enrich the universe, create new hobbyists, and are successful (which means more work for them. Of course they don't want to see a ruination of GW IP).
2- I personally don't see this lasting long or being too great a commercial success. There is too much competition out there and a little bit of googling by a savy parent will lead them to either discover this is a gateway drug to a super expensive hobby or a gateway to books not appropriate for their children. Even with no basis, how appealing is the title "WARHAMMER" to a parent?  In a world with Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Redwall, etc. etc., what hope does WA have to catch on? It is relying on already established fans to introduce it to their kids... kids we were already likely to introduce the hobby to. And if these books get put in the Sci-Fi section of a bookstore instead of the children's section... no hope.

What I want to see from GW in 2018

Just spitballing the biggest opportunities (as I see it) for GW to deliver some real winners this year.
1- Plastic Sisters of Battle: I think this is #1 on a lot of peoples lists. It just needs to happen already. Its 2018 GW. Just do it. The people want it. It will help your image. You can't get rid of them. Might as well upgrade them..

2- A complete edition of 40k: This may ACTUALLY HAPPEN. For like the first time EVER. We are on track to get a codex for every existing major faction in the game, as well as several new factions/subfactions. I would not be surprised if by Q3 or Q4, every present range has an updated 40k codex for 8th edition.
3- An official list building app for 40k: This should have happened at release. Should have happened again after CA. IT NEEDS TO EXIST. I like battlescribe, don't get me wrong, but it is prone to errors due to the fact it is community made and run. A professional and official app would be much more accomodating. It would also provide a standard format for TOs to rally around EVERYWHERE!
4- Specialist Games Relaunches- GW Have been doing this and it has been AWESOME. I need to play more Blood Bowl
myself and still have to get Necromunda. But the models are AWESOME and people seem to really enjoy it. So the next ones I want to see are Mordheim and Battlefleet Gothic. I would TOTALLY jump in head first for both these games, and both the Video Games have been well received. Enough so even that BFG Armada is getting a sequel.

5- More Plastic Heresy- The Battle of Calth and Burning of Prospero kits are GREAT, but there still needs to be a few things to TRULY make 30k accessible. Namely, plastic Deimos Rhinos. I would really like to see plastic MkII and some other plastic vehicles (Fire Raptor, SM Super Heavies, etc. etc.) Plastic Solar Auxilia would also be AMAZING
6- Updated Characters- There are SOOOOOO many characters that still use SUPER outdated models. Eldar Pheonix Lords, Dark Angels, Blood Angels, and Space Wolves Characters. Tigurius. Thraka. Fabius Bile. Abaddon. Some of these are from 2nd Edition. DANTE- LORD COMMANDER OF THE BLOOD ANGELS AND REGENT OF IMPERIUM NIHILUS HAS A 2nd ED MODEL! Its time to upgrade these guys.

7- Weapon upgrade sprues- Kinda tired of each codex having fewer and fewer unit option because it didn't come in the box that unit as sold. Really REALLY cuts down on conversions AND tactical flexibility. And can kill potential thematic armies. Power lances are disappearing essentially. Its disheartenting. A way around this is just to simply sell a small $10 sprue of various power weapons and guns for us with a multitude of armies. A generic Space Marine one could be used by all Imperial SM factions, GK, CSM and all their subfactions AS SOLD. A more generic one could reach even wider.
8- Rogue Traders in 40k- With keyword and micro factions, I just think there is a GOLDEN opportunity to bring these SUPER ICONIC characters from the lore onto the tabletop. And so much potential for crazy rules associated with them.

9- Some love for "minor" 40k factions- Kinda in line with above. Keywords make anything possible. I wouldn't mind White Dwarf articles (eventually collected into Chapter Approved or an index of sorts) surrounding some classic minor factions. Feral Orks, Kroot Mercenaries, the Lost and the Damned. And a chance for some new ones even. A good way to port in Necromunda gangs or Arbites too.

10- Enforcers back in Necromunda- Speaking of the Boys in Blue, this one is purely personal as they are the Gang I have and love. The fact they aren't in Newcramunda is what has kept me out of that game thus far. Arbites/Enforcers are SUPER AWESOME and are easily placed in Necromunda AND 40k, so likely a kit that will sell well.

11- More Free Peoples stuff for AoS- I'm tired of seeing Sigmarines. There is so much more to humanity than just them. Plus Stormcast have to be recruited from somewhere. Great crossover for Mordheim with kits too.
12- More Ork Stuff- These too have tooooooooooo many old models. The Old Foe deserves more than GW has given them over the past several years. Its time they fix that. Everyone loves to see orks in the game and on the table. They need to reward the people who do bring them and encourage more to start. They are the greatest hobbyist army there is IMO.
13- Gue'la- Tau human auxilia. The Genestealer Cult upgrade set for Imperial Guard showed this is really possible. They have been in the lore for a while. It owuld be great to really see them on the battlefield alongside their fishface overlords.

Sorry there is not a lot of AoS stuff on the list. I am not tapped into that side of things enough to really say what I want or need. Really trying to work on my Lizardmen this year, but I am setting them up mostly to play WHFB 8th edition, 9th Age and KoW and not so much AoS. I really want to get Shadespire and the Warhammer Quest games, but that is for another day.
