In Gowan Ring x 4

"This is one of only a few recent releases that might genuinely be called inspired. As a songwriter and musician B'eirth is easily the equal of psychedelic folk legends Robin Williamson (Incredible String Band) or the late Nick Drake. Comparisons to virtually any other musicians exploring similar territory would simply not do this justice." - Joshua Buckley for TYR Journal

"A unique synthesis of folk, mediaeval and psychedelia that could only be In Gowan Ring. Listening to this album is like sliding into a warm bath infused with oils and perfumes. Mellow and beautiful, B'eirth's gentle voice and music are a delight. The lyrics are obscure, but still suggestive and a source of inspiration and contemplation for those who make the effort to listen to them." -RIK for Flux Europa

"There is a depth to these songs that is revealed only upon repeated listens. It is this natural gift for creating multi-layered compositions that is so attractive about In Gowan Ring's work in general and Hazel Steps through a Weathered Home in particular. Quite simply, one of the half dozen or so best releases of the year." -Jeff Penczak for FakeJazz.com

"It's been worth the wait everyone. This album is B's best work, and my words, plain as the farmboy I am, can not do it justice. B', you've mastered the art of song my friend. My heart swells and my head swirls! I'm in awe." - Tim Renner, Some Dark Holler

"In Gowan Ring's "The Glinting Spade" is as beautiful as any psych-folk album can be without completely materializing. "Hazel Steps Through A Weathered Home" as a whole, is a more stripped down effort. However, that doesn't really diminish the album's preternatural feel. The songs are much starker and darker than on "The Glinting Spade", but they also have more gravity and substance. It can easily ensnare the unsuspecting listener in its magical folds."-J. M. for Opuszine

"The music of In Gowan Ring is rather timeless, archaic perhaps but not from a clearly-defined period. The lyrics are rather introspective but most images evoked by the texts are quite clear. The songs are really a pleasure to listen to and the album as a (very coherent) whole is very moving, solemn and melancholic, but it does not make me sad - I get the feeling that spring must be near... Really a recommended album." - HD for FunProx.com

"Very poetic release of intimate mystic songs, more minimal as earlier releases, sparsely arranged, towards the core of an essential expression. The album has the richness and calmness of an introspective vision. The style is minimal without being repetitive with a rich sound through its poetic vision. The whole album is beautiful and recommended." -Gerald for Van Hett PSYCH FOLK

-Glinting Spade (1999)
Though arguably the best In Gowan Ring experience is live -- B'eirth plays the medieval troubadour quite well and mysteriously, but doesn't forget humor or the fact that the Industrial Revolution has in fact happened -- The Glinting Spade is quite a lovely listen indeed. Anyone captivated by folk that either consciously explores its very early roots or the acid folk approach that psychedelia let in will find something to like here; B'eirth's approach suggests Edward Ka-Spel as much as it does the mythical figure of Ossian, say. His generally acoustic bent is more carefully seasoned by low-key experimentation throughout The Glinting Spade -- extended tones, strange echoes, and buried sounds expand the palette of his work to an intriguing degree, with "In the Dream of the Queen" being an especially striking example. That said, the choice of instruments tends to be tried and true -- everything from church organ to zither is credited, along with more esoteric choices of fire, chalice, bow and arrow, even oats! Quite what the role of everything is meant to be is unclear, but if the effect is to create a sense of a shadowy ritual out of time past, In Gowan Ring succeeds quite well. B'eirth isn't one to shout or scream -- what's the point, after all? -- and his style of singing is very, very restrained, avoiding the sometimes tiresome drama of similarly minded revivalists who apparently think they really are about to summon up the Horned King and the Great Hunt. Songs like "To Thrum a Glassy Stem" and "Bow Star" are quiet beauties, while the lusher approach of "Cipher's String on the Tree" suggests a great lord's minstrels performing a late-night service. ~ Ned Raggett, All Music Guide

In Gowan Ring - From the land of little Osmonds, comes this nomadic bunch of sprites and pot-headed pixies, led by the enigmatic B'eirth and wielding such modern day contraptions as sackbut, cornetto, cittern, psaltry, zither, timbrel, whistles, bells, gongs and tons of other weird sounding shit too numerous to mention. Epic lengthed drones are nestled comfortably amidst some of the finest acid/psych/wyrdfolk on this (or any other) planet.

"Am I the only one here who has these moments where you've fallen asleep in the chair, and when you "wake up" you feel like you've got no control over your body but you can watch while your limbs move & haul you around the room and? Really? Well anyway that's what the finer moments of this disc feel like ... as the tree ears sprout from between my toes and I keep whispering, "it's only a cd-r, it's only a cd-r". "

"The songs have a somber feel, as though the innkeeper let the lyre player have a little too much mead, and now the whole room is treated to his many laments on nature and love." -Brainwashed

Micro-East Collective x2

On the surface the exagerate philanthropists slip, cause the coalition of fail exploratory, his malajusted curiosity mutant is kept almost perpetual in the tuning in of the musical dictation to the back of the galaxy, strange labyrinths with key elements forgotten in the soil find the third eye to return to the calmness, and I appear of coming, you know that everything is false, the light damages of white what you believe to sow the tree while it grows to his slow time, increasingly highly, there they were putting his backs, to see the exit, only that this time any change, my old father now plays in the horizon with the machines of the time and thinks about her, thank you, for the life.

Roy Montgomery & Chris Heaphy - True [1999]

Experimental guitarist Roy Montgomery was born and raised in Christchurch, New Zealand, forming his first band, the teen garage combo the Psychedeliks, in 1971. After serving out the remainder of the decade in similarly obscure outfits including Compulsory Fun and Murder Strikes Pink, in late 1980 he co-founded the seminal Kiwi post-punk trio the Pin Group; their debut single "Ambivalence" was also the first record ever issued on the now-legendary indie label Flying Nun, its echoing, darkly melodic guitar sound foreshadowing the evocative sonic approach Montgomery would continue to pursue for the remainder of his career. After the Pin Group disbanded in 1982, a year later he received a $750 National Arts Council grant to form the Shallows, their lone 1985 single "Suzanne Said" further honing Montgomery's expansive drone aesthetic. However, he then spent the next five years largely removed from music, instead balancing his studies of Russian language and literature with his interests in cinema and avant-garde theater.

Montgomery returned to performing in 1990 after a chance meeting with fellow Pin Group alum Peter Stapleton led to an invitation to join the fledgling noise-pop band Dadamah. After a handful of releases the group splintered in 1993, with Montgomery resurfacing the following year with his first solo effort, Scenes from the South Island; with fellow guitarist Chris Heaphy, he also formed the duo Dissolve, issuing their LP That That Is...Is (Not) that same year. Montgomery then spent the next year and a half travelling through the U.S., England and Latin America, during that time recording a wealth of new material which found its way onto a series of singles for labels including Ajax, Siltbreeze and Drunken Fish. The full-length Temple IV followed on Kranky in 1996, while the following year he collaborated with the members of Bardo Pond in Hash Jar Tempo, issuing the album Well-Oiled; also in 1997, Montgomery appeared on the Flying Saucer Attack EP Goodbye. The solo And Now the Rain Sounds like Life Is Falling Down Through It appeared in 1998, trailed a year later by the singles compilation 324 E. 13th St. #7. Summer 2000 saw the release of Allegory of Hearing. Silver Wheel of Prayer followed a year later.

One Hour Painting (2-headed Monster Attacking Castle)

Oi! Shitty conversion. Just a quick one. I've been feeling real lethargic lately. I think I need a change. I might try to finish some unfinished paintings. I'd like to just do some vlogs, too.
Music is by Roy Montgomery.

The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs [BOX SET] (1999)

The Magnetic Fields are a bona fide band, but in most essential respects they are the project of studio wunderkind Stephin Merritt. Merritt writes, produces, and (generally) sings all of their material, as well as plays many of the instruments, concocting a sort of indie
pop synth rock. While the Magnetic Fields may draw upon the electronic textures of vintage acts like ABBA, Kraftwerk, Roxy Music with Eno, Joy Division, and Gary Numan, Merritt's vision is far more pointed toward the alternative rock underground. His songs are also far warmer and more pure pop-oriented than the above reference points might lead you to believe, sounding at times like late-20th century equivalents to Phil Spector or Brian Wilson.

Merritt had been recording on his own four-track from a very young age, but didn't issue the first Magnetic Fields album until 1990, when he was well into his twenties. The first pair of discs featured the choirgirl vocals of Susan Amway, and are probably the most accessible offerings for general listeners wary of electro-rock. On subsequent releases, Merritt handled the vocals himself in a deep croon not far removed from his European influences. The synth pop quotient also became heavier, although Merritt has always taken care to mix in quite a few natural instruments with the electronic ones, often with the help of Claudia Gonson (percussion) and Sam Davol (cello, flute). The emphasis has always remained on the pop hooks and eccentric, romantically reflective lyrics rather than the bedrock synthetic rhythms and textures.

In addition to his work with Magnetic Fields, Merritt has involved himself in several side projects, the most notable being the 6ths' Wasps' Nests album (1995). Merritt sang only one track himself on this disc, for which he acted as composer/producer/multi-instrumentalist, employing well-known alternative rock singers like Barbara Manning, Dean Wareham (Luna), Lou Barlow, Georgia Hubley (Yo La Tengo), Chris Knox, and Robert Scott (the Bats) to handle the lead vocals. After releasing 1997's New Despair as the Gothic Archies, Merritt finally returned to the Magnetic Fields aegis for 1999's 69 Love Songs, released as both a trio of separate discs as well as a limited edition three-CD box set. Merritt spent the next few years releasing more side projects, including records from the Gothic Archies, Future Bible Heroes, the 6ths, as well as numerous soundtracks. It wasn't until May 2004 that Merritt and his Magnetic Fields finally got around to making i, a collection of songs that begin with the aforementioned vowel.

Hash Jar Tempo - Under Glass [1999]

El Ritmo de Tarro de Picadillo era el nombre aplicado a las colaboraciones infrecuentes entre la roca espacial Psychedelphia combo Bardo la Charca y Nueva Zelanda - el guitarrista basado experimental Roy Montgomery. Hash Jar Tempo was the name applied to the infrequent collaborations between Psychedelphia space-rock combo Bardo Pond and New Zealand-based experimental guitarist Roy Montgomery. They first teamed in March of 1995 to record the guitar freakout Well Oiled, and when Montgomery returned to the U.S. in 1998 to appear at San Francisco's Terrastock II festival, he made a stop at Bardo Pond's new Philadelphia area recording studio to team for a second session which a year later yielded the album Under Glass.

Mogwai - Come on Die Young [1999]
