Chad VanGaalen - Soft Airplane [2008]

"No one knows where go when we're dead or when we're dreaming."

After powering through most of
God Is Not Great on the plane yesterday, it's hard to immediately change gears and spend time questioning what happens after you die. That being said, when the questions come courtesy of the beautiful songs Chad VanGaalen wrote for Soft Airplane, the experience is a rewarding one. Chad has always written tales of death, murder and rage, but in a way that forces you to start asking the same questions and feeling the same emotions.

I read an interesting review of the new Okkervil River record on Rawkblog where Dave mentioned that "critics as musicians are failures, much more often than not; they know too much to fuck up, which is unfortunately a preventative measure to playing rock 'n' roll music." If that statement is true, the other side of the coin would indicate that only when a musical soul is secluded from the shouts and whispers of the critical public can true greatness or incredible failure occur. Such is the case for VanGaalen.

I hesitate to rely on the easy play of labeling him as a musical recluse riddled with insecurities when I talk about his songs, because that cheapen the success of this record. Even if it's only subconscious, those words force the reader to think the sounds were contrived by luck or simply good timing; the result of someone stumbling upon the combination of sounds without much thought and that couldn't be less true when it comes to VanGaalen.

He's obviously a unique man with social anxiety and an unquenchable thirst for creative expression and as a result Soft Airplane is incredibly spontaneous and challenging, but at the same time multiple listens show how well the record is thought out. Sound effects, textures and emotion are nestled into the folds and corners, and until you can listen to the complete song, you aren't really hearing Chad's visions.

Tara Burke of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania employs voice, guitar, organ, dulcimer, accordion, Casio and more to create her home-recorded acid folk as Fursaxa. Prior to her Fursaxa work she was an active ingredient in Clock Strikes Thirteen, Ted Casterline and his Perfectly Perfect Pieces of Fruit, UN, Her debut album Mandrake was produced, engineered, and released in Japan by none other than Kawabata Makoto of Acid Mothers Temple. She also self released the cd-r's Trobairitz Are Here From Venus, and The Cult From Moon Mountain. She has also contributed to these songs to the following compilations: Free My Mind (V/A Nice Pooper #23, zine 2001), Artemisia (V/A Sound Collector #7, zine 2001),
Kniphofia (V/A Surrounded By Sun, Fonal 2002), Porpoise Wings (V/A Hand/Eye, Hand/Eye 2002), Chartreuse My Green (V/A The Invisible Pyramid, Last Visible Dog 2003), and of course her piece for this issue’s cd as well. Her LP Madrigals in Duos on Time-Lag Records is due any time now, and presents Fursaxa at her finest musically with the gorgeous packaging we have come to expect from Time-Lag. She is also going to be part of the Jewelled Antler Library of 3" cd-r's, which makes perfect sense. Her sound combines folk, lo-fi, hashish smoke mixed with incense drifting out of a cathedral doorway, dreams that skirt the edges of nightmares, hallucinatory droning organic primitive sophistication.

Bill Callahan - Woke On A Whaleheart [2007]

B e i r u t

Beirut is the band of 22-year-old Santa Fe native Zach Condon. The band's first official release was assisted by Jeremy Barnes (Neutral Milk Hotel, A Hawk and a Hacksaw) and Heather Trost (A Hawk and a Hacksaw); it combines elements of Eastern European and folk sounds. Condon plays the trumpet and the ukulele as his main instruments, having been unable to play guitar because of a wrist injury that prevented his hand from reaching fully around the neck of a guitar.

Though young, Condon has already released a few albums. He recorded under the name The Real People when he was 15, making The Joys of Losing Weight, which is a lo-fi electronic record (ie, generally in the style of 'Scenic World' on Gulag Orkestar) fashioned consciously after The Magnetic Fields. At 16, he recorded an entire doo-wop album that was inspired by Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers. Zach also released a three-song EP titled "Small Time American Bats" under the name 1971. The album was recorded in 2001-2002 and has never been officially released. Condon attended Santa Fe High School, where he was a student until he dropped out at the age of 16 to travel Europe (with his brother Ryan Condon) where he was first exposed to Balkan gypsy music, notably including the Boban Marković Orchestra and Goran Bregović.

Live, Beirut's shifting roster generally consists of Condon accompanied by Perrin Cloutier (cello/accordion), Jason Poranski (guitar/mandolin/ukulele), Nick Petree (drums), Kristin Ferebee (violin), Paul Collins (organ/keys/tambourine/ukulele), Jon Natchez (baritone sax/mandolin/glockenspiel), and Kelly Pratt (trumpet/euphonium).

History

In 2006, Beirut released two Balkan-inspired recordings through Ba Da Bing, Gulag Orkestar and Lon Gisland, both also available as an expanded version of Gulag Orkestar LP through the UK label 4AD. Beirut has also released other individual songs, three available on Pompeii EP, and the one on a split with Calexico, and one on a compilation for The Believer magazine. While living in Brooklyn, Condon also shot a video for "Scenic World" at the Sweet'N Low factory, and performed several venues in New York and Europe.

Zach appeared in the June/July 2007 issue of The Believer, with a song entitled "Venice".

His first official music video was for the song "Elephant Gun". The video was directed by Alma Har'el. The second video, which was for the song "Postcards from Italy", was also directed by Alma Har'el, and was released later. Lauren Tafuri was the costume designer for both of these videos.

In June 2007 they played the Glastonbury Festival's Jazz World Stage. Later in 2007, Zach appeared as a guest trumpeter on the second album from Get Him Eat Him, titled Arms Down. He has also appeared as a guest trumpeter on A Hawk and a Hacksaw's album The Way the Wind Blows, a band founded by former Beirut members Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost.

Beirut's second album, The Flying Club Cup, was leaked onto the Internet August 25, 2007 then subsequently released in shops and on Internet music sites on October 9, 2007.

On April 3rd, 2008, Beirut cancelled a previously announced summer European tour. Condon explained the cancellations in a post on the official Beirut website, stating that he wanted to put the effort into ensuring that any shows would be "as good as humanly possible". Soon after, The Stranger reported that Condon is working on a third album tentatively scheduled for a fall release.

Pink Reason - Cleaning The Mirror [2007]

Jad Fair & Daniel Johnston

A good disc, I feel calm in the sofa to understand on the sonic transfer that it is given in total and natural unit of thoughts, once the tape goes, the field of colors dances in the distance, a horizon of surge that begins inside if same, for me, an immobile look towards his dance in the air is my form of thank, the life always returns, always it goes away, and there does not stay anything any more than a trip as astronaut.

The music that floats about the sonorous orbit Freezer, is transmitted by great fluency in the immensity of the body, contemplative man, to think inside a spaceship, so far away of the vegetation, bankruptcies I cement!, burn his your head!, the sudden impulse of begin impregnates in the harmony, of bases Post-rock, Lo-Fi, Shoegaze, Dream Pop, Experimentally. To major distance, the frozen air stabs the heart of free bird in the sky, black, toxic smoke!!!.
Now, the nice caress in every playful arpeggio, which moves in a small, sharp note, but uterine material.

Future Bible Heroes - Memories of Love [1997]

The Future Bible Heroes are one of several lo-fi projects headed by vocalist/keyboardist/songwriter Stephin Merritt (others include Magnetic Fields and the 6ths). 1997's Memories of Love featured songwriting and production contributions from Chris Ewen and vocals by longtime Merritt collaborator Claudia Gonson.

The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs [BOX SET] (1999)

The Magnetic Fields are a bona fide band, but in most essential respects they are the project of studio wunderkind Stephin Merritt. Merritt writes, produces, and (generally) sings all of their material, as well as plays many of the instruments, concocting a sort of indie
pop synth rock. While the Magnetic Fields may draw upon the electronic textures of vintage acts like ABBA, Kraftwerk, Roxy Music with Eno, Joy Division, and Gary Numan, Merritt's vision is far more pointed toward the alternative rock underground. His songs are also far warmer and more pure pop-oriented than the above reference points might lead you to believe, sounding at times like late-20th century equivalents to Phil Spector or Brian Wilson.

Merritt had been recording on his own four-track from a very young age, but didn't issue the first Magnetic Fields album until 1990, when he was well into his twenties. The first pair of discs featured the choirgirl vocals of Susan Amway, and are probably the most accessible offerings for general listeners wary of electro-rock. On subsequent releases, Merritt handled the vocals himself in a deep croon not far removed from his European influences. The synth pop quotient also became heavier, although Merritt has always taken care to mix in quite a few natural instruments with the electronic ones, often with the help of Claudia Gonson (percussion) and Sam Davol (cello, flute). The emphasis has always remained on the pop hooks and eccentric, romantically reflective lyrics rather than the bedrock synthetic rhythms and textures.

In addition to his work with Magnetic Fields, Merritt has involved himself in several side projects, the most notable being the 6ths' Wasps' Nests album (1995). Merritt sang only one track himself on this disc, for which he acted as composer/producer/multi-instrumentalist, employing well-known alternative rock singers like Barbara Manning, Dean Wareham (Luna), Lou Barlow, Georgia Hubley (Yo La Tengo), Chris Knox, and Robert Scott (the Bats) to handle the lead vocals. After releasing 1997's New Despair as the Gothic Archies, Merritt finally returned to the Magnetic Fields aegis for 1999's 69 Love Songs, released as both a trio of separate discs as well as a limited edition three-CD box set. Merritt spent the next few years releasing more side projects, including records from the Gothic Archies, Future Bible Heroes, the 6ths, as well as numerous soundtracks. It wasn't until May 2004 that Merritt and his Magnetic Fields finally got around to making i, a collection of songs that begin with the aforementioned vowel.
