Blank Dogs - On Two Sides [2008]

Blank Dogs Interview :

Flying under the radar for most of 2007, Blank Dogs went relatively unnoticed, even though Mr. Blank Dog was releasing material at an astoundingly rapid pace, which set the bar higher for what defines a prolific songwriter. But that period didn’t last for long as people began to detect the immense talent in the bedroom rock of Blank Dogs and embrace the mystery. Bloggers hurriedly slotted Blank Dogs into their year-end best of lists, while others are just starting to rave about the band now. The likeability of the band is immediate. Washes of synth fuzz, strident guitars, indifferent vocals and undeniably catchy bass lines, Mr. Blank Dog fuses these elements into haunting, atmospheric songs. He has an innate ability to write psych rock melodies with pop touches that fixate listeners for days. Though he is releasing material at a daring speed, he consistently delivers quality, perspective-changing songs. He shows no signs of stopping now as 12 releases are planned for this year alone.

You are extremely prolific with recording and releasing material. Would you tell me about your recording process, and how you choose which labels and forms to release your music through?

I record from home. I just write some melodies and record them. I get a bit perfectionist when it comes down to mixing and adding effects, but they tend to wash out into some blur. I guess that's a process? As far as labels, mainly I like to work with people whose prior output is stuff I like a lot, but I also like to help people starting up labels too. As far as format, I think vinyl is the best way to listen to music. CDs have no intrinsic value, it's just data. Also, it seems like they just fall out of magazines whenever you pick them up, these days. Giveaway junk. It cheapens the music, in my opinion. Besides, it all winds up on SoulSeek anyway, that's why I have everything that's already out downloadable from the website. Cassettes are cheap and easy for people who don't have enough money to start a label but love music, that's why I've agreed to do a bunch. They also require active listening instead of clicking on a link. Some people just prefer the analog format too.

Bardo Pond - 4.3.06 [2006] / Bardo Pond & Pre - Split 10" [2007]

Bardo Pond live @ The Maze, Nottingham. Thursday 30th November 2006.

For years, I compared Bardo Pond to Sonic Youth, for anyone who had either never heard them or heard any of the lesser known bands similar to them, only because Sonic Youth is the most famous band that sounds kind of like Bardo Pond. The second comparison would be to My Bloody Valentine. But, over the years, Bardo's sound has evolved, and these comparisons are no longer accurate. Nowadays, to be precise, one must use references from all spectrums of rock, and even avant garde jazz, to describe the full fuzz of Bardo Pond.

Trying to use no comparisons at all, imagine the sound of an electrified hummingbird: sometimes there will be motion, with twists and turns in their songs; other times, the sound is feverishly kept, hovering in place. Bardo Pond creates an intense wall of sound that you expect to break through your skin, but, instead, it just hums and buzzes all over you.

Psychedelic Horseshit

I never thought I would find the courage to disgrace a complete scene of music, but shitgaze really is abysmal. Another of these silhouettes of shite is ’Psychedelic Horseshit’, I mean seriously which member of the band was drunk when that name was conjured up. ’New Wave Hippies’ sounds like a toddler playing with something that has thousands of buttons. The guitars are scratchy, and deliberately out of tune. It’s almost as if this band has gone out of its way to completely undermine every musical convention every proposed. This band is either a load of idiots on speed who suddenly thought they could play music while tripping, and sounds like a very massive pile of utter drunken shit, or it’s just some very clever chimpanzee’s who’ve evolved and suddenly realise they ’might’ be able to play some music. In one song, ’Bad Vibrations’ the vocalist literally says over and over again ’ahhoooowaaaooo oooo oooo oooooooo’. I’ve actually given up on summing up this utterly pointless way of life. I would rather shave all of the hair off on my body and commit myself to a life of celibacy and become a neo-Nazi. My flat mate has put this review out of its misery and very kindly summed up this entire music scene in two words, ’utter bollocks’.

Ted Milton • Odes [2007]

Ted Milton (born 1943) grew up in Africa, Canada and Great Britain. He published some early poems in magazines like Paris Review. In 1969 his poetry was published in the anthology Children of Albion: Poetry of the Underground in Britain. In the mid-sixties he began performing as a puppeteer, participating in numerous international festivals and appearing on So It Goes, the TV show hosted by Tony Wilson. He contributed a short scene for Terry Gilliam's film Jabberwocky.

In the late seventies he began to play alto-saxophone and founded the group Blurt. The first single "My Mother Was A friend Of An Enemy Of The People" was soon followed by the live album In Berlin (1981). Since then Blurt released more than twenty records. While living in Brussels in the mid-nineties, Milton started making book-objects with found materials. These were shown on several exhibitions and have been taken up in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris as well as in the British Library.

Ted Milton also makes art-objects and installations, having had shows in "Nadine" in Brussels and bookstore "Tropisme" in Brussels,

In 2000 he published the CD Sublime with the Andreas Gerth (loopspool). In 2001 Ted Milton staged a hommage to the Russian author of the absurd Daniil Kharms: "In Kharm's Way", a mixture of music, puppeteering and spoken word, with the electronic musician Sam Britton. In 2007 he collaborates again with Sam Britton in the "ODES"-project; an overview of 25 years solo work outside of Blurt.

Black Dice

Black Dice is an experimental electronica group currently based in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

They formed in spring 1997 soon after guitarist Bjorn Copeland met drummer Hisham Bharoocha at the Rhode Island School of Design. Joined by Bjorn's brother Eric Copeland on vocals and bassist Sebastian Blanck, their early sound has been described as thrash-influenced noise. They released several 7"s and embarked on a few brief tours before Blanck left the group and was replaced by Aaron Warren. In 1999 the band moved to New York City and began to experiment with their sound, with Warren and the brothers incorporating more pedals into their setup and slowly leaving their earlier hardcore-leaning style in favor of a more atmospheric. They are currently signed to Paw Tracks. The release of Broken Ear Record in 2005 and Manoman in 2006 saw the band innovating, incorporating elements of Afrobeat and breakbeat into their releases.

Y Pants [1998]

Jad Fair & Daniel Johnston

A good disc, I feel calm in the sofa to understand on the sonic transfer that it is given in total and natural unit of thoughts, once the tape goes, the field of colors dances in the distance, a horizon of surge that begins inside if same, for me, an immobile look towards his dance in the air is my form of thank, the life always returns, always it goes away, and there does not stay anything any more than a trip as astronaut.

The Residents - Commercial Album

Over the course of a recording career spanning several decades, the Residents remained a riddle of Sphinx-like proportions; cloaking their lives and music in a haze of willful obscurity, the band's members never identified themselves by name, always appearing in public in disguise -- usually tuxedos, top hats and giant eyeball masks -- and refusing to grant media interviews. Drawing inspiration from the likes of fellow innovators including Harry Partch, Sun Ra, and Captain Beefheart, the Residents channelled the breadth of American music into their idiosyncratic, satiric vision, their mercurial blend of electronics, distortion, avant-jazz, classical symphonies and gratingly nasal vocals reinterpreting everyone...

Sonic Youth ...

Lydia Lunch & Thurston Moore - Drowning in Limbo. (1995)
