1. Escape his evil, controlling clan.2. Get a job. 3. Work magic on HIS terms.4. Avoid all dragons.
Tori was doing great until sexy dragon Baldewin interfered.
Between the little gifts, constant protection, and the steadfast confidence from the overgrown lizard, Tori wonders if maybe that last step needs revising. He has no chance to consider it.
Not before trouble called Jaeggi REALLY hits. Now he’s on the road trip from hell to the one place he’d never thought would be a safe haven. A clan of dragons.

I live in Texas, as most of you know. So, here's the deal. If I can't find food at the grocery store and I'm still having to boil water to make it usable, there is no way in hell I will spend time reviewing. But, I finished a couple of books lately.
This one was good. Fun. Great world. Dragons. That's all I've got.
Another captivating story from this fantastic world, the action is just in the right places, the tension putted me on the edge of my seat, perfect dosage of frighting and lovable (and steamy) moments made this story so pleasant! Congratulations to A.J. Sherwood and Jocelynn Drake!!!
I’m completely satisfied, can’t wait to read the next book!!!
I have this book on Audible as well, the narrator Joel Leslie gave a spectacular performance, so committed, amazing acting, high praises to him!!!
I enjoyed this book. I did and I’ll start with that. It’s another super sweet read. A slow burn. It’s difficult because I liked the story, the characters and I’m waiting for the next book. But...
It felt over long at times. And it just felt like something was missing. This could just be that it’s such a sweet read and it’s missing a bit of edge. I’m not sure. It’s certainly not a book I’d re-read
Another wonderfully entertaining entry in this paranormal series
I really am enjoying this series from AJ and Jocelynn.
The world building is excellent, although as I said with book one, they don't feel particularly European even though the setting is there.
That's not to say it takes anything away from the excellence of the narrative or the storytelling.
I love the world they've created with its dragon clans, missing mages, mates and magic.
This book gives us Baldewin and Tori's romance and it's utterly charming, a combination of prickly, distrusting mage and serious minded, security conscious dragon.
It also introduces a new mage clan and we get to meet and find out more about the Ice Dragon Clan.
What I really appreciated was the time taken to break down Tori's reservation and his fears as everything he thought was true is turned on its head.
With a strong secondary plot drawing on the series long enemies, this one races through with great pacing.
Wow! Just blown away by this magnificent reading experience!
Not sure how these two authors just totally upped their game in this second book so very much! So much love, so much humor that had me giggling like a madman! And so many sweet instances between the two MCs that I must melted! Love these dragons and mages!
Okay, so...... Loved the story (it's almost like a TV series at this point..... Slow plot, big romance. But still interesting.) And I still love the world. I mean, Dragons and Mages. Who wouldn't? And some of the characters are definitely very intriguing. But, all the things that went wrong for me in the first book have become more apparent because I'm already used to the world and the majority of the characters. I feel like I'd have enjoyed it a lot more if about 150 pages were chopped off of it and it had sat with the authors maybe a few more weeks.
Still mostly an entertaining read, though I enjoyed this one less than the first book. Things got a little repetitive and at times the pace just dragged. Tori (I have a hard time taking a Finnish character who goes by a nickname that translates to "square" seriously, btw) and Baldewin made a cute enough couple, but I can't say I was greatly invested in their romance. Also, it has to be said: The Finnish settings and characters in this one felt even less Finnish than the German ones felt German. I guess I'll just have to accept that the various interesting settings and different cultures involved in these books are mostly window dressing.
Breath is the second book in A.J. Sherwood and Jocelynn Drake’s Scales ‘N Spells series. Here we get a continuation of the Burkhard clan’s journey to find more mages and bring them to safety (and also find some potential mates). As with the first book, I find the strength here is some creative world building. I love the magical world the authors have built and it is clear that there is a lot of thought and detail put into the story. It was nice to see the focus shift here to a mage who was familiar with dragons and his abilities, but who had a different set of struggles than we saw from Cameron in the first book. Unlike Cameron, Tori knows he is a mage and knows about dragons, but everything he has been told is a lie. This story gives a chance to expand beyond the lore we learned in the first book, as well as to feature dragons from a different part of the world. We also get to see more of the Ice dragons here, and so I enjoyed seeing the universe expanded in this story.
this series is getting addictive, yes most of it is a tad predictable but at the moment that is what i am needing.
Tori and Baldewin were adorable together, they compliment each other well. I was glad we got to see another clan of dragons involved in this, made it seem like there could be an opportunity for more books in the future.
There is a novella with Warin before Ravi's book which i am looking forward to reading. The audio has book 2 and 2.5 put together which is lovely.
I am really enjoying this clan of Fire dragons and i am waiting to see the real purpose of the Jaeggi is and what they want to do to dragons and mages, i mean there are some ideas but nothing concrete.
Oh man, yes! I loved this story. I love A.J. Sherwood's writing. I enjoyed Tori and Baldwin together, I loved Tori escaping from his clan and their stupid ways. I love him finding the dragons and how not trusting he was of it all. His clan had certainly twisted his brain up with what dragons were and how much of a threat they all are.
I felt for Tori and how much he had been told that he was nothing just because he was a guy. His magic was nothing and could never be. Yet he knows so much more than he ever thought. I loved him slowly finding his footing amongst the fire dragons and with Baldwin as his mate. He is a mage and a really talented one at that. He gets to get his back from his people too which was wonderful. I love this series. It's feel good, it's magic, and most of all it's DRAGONS. I'm in my little happy heaven. Can't wait for the next book.
I’ll start with the story/plot. We have Tori, a 35 yr old man who actually comes off as 25. He has been sheltered and lied to his whole life, deciding to finally break free. We have Baldewin ..... I honestly can’t tell you much about him. His whole character seems somewhat generic. Is there anything actually special or unique about him ? Hate to say it, but not really. You compare him to say Warin and they’re basically the same character. That being said, I liked him. I liked the way he handled Tori and his issues. The thing is, I’m finding this book had perhaps more issues than the last one. I feel like in this book, we are told more, in GREAT detail, about what is happening and what everyone is doing and how a room is decorated, than actually giving us the two main characters interacting and living the story.
First of all, so damn repetitious, an issue obviously carried over from book one. We are constantly being reminded of something or everything , and it’s unnecessary. Heard it once, heard it twice, more than that is just filler, which this long book, does not need. Now my next issue, although it’s quite a small detail in the grand scheme of things, it’s also .... very THERE. I said the same thing about the first book, but this was was even more noticeable. We have mages who pull out little vials of fallen star, and morning dew, and all these super special ingredients right ? Yet every single spoken spell ends in “gev adi” AGAIN which means what ? Who knows !!! It seems so incredible unoriginal when compared to a vial of idk, moonlight from a still night. And I get it, I’m nit picking, it’s just two words, who really cares. Lastly, the book is long, and it got kinda boring at times. I honest to god did not need to know what a freaking room was ever used for or why. I think this author pairing is just not for me. I will of course continue to read just about everything Drake will release, but not when paired with Sherwood. Will I read book 3 ? Oh man, that's a tough one, and it will either be a no from me, or I'll skim through it and just not review it at all, because I this point, I think my feelings on on this series are pretty clear.
This book took a long time to tell me about not much.
Quick summary: Tori is trying to survive after having left his clan. The Burkhard Dragon clan finds him and tries to get him to come back and join their clan. He eventually accepts, and they have to make their way from Finland to Germany. After some mishaps, they get back there, and Tori and Baldewin formalize their relationship. They also try to reach out to Tori’s old clan to see if there’s any other people who want to leave. The end.
● I’m not a fan of the writing, and the characters aren’t memorable, relying on a lot of tropes and over-exaggeration to mark them out as distinct characters.
● The dragons are nothing but large walking battery packs for the mages, as they’re constantly being beaten by the villains and need to have their asses bailed out by the mages. They’re ineffectual and I have no sympathy for them.
● The plot is predictable and the villains are hilaribad. In order for the main characters to be informed of what the Jaeggi clan is up to — since dragons are so fucking ineffectual at anything, they can’t even investigate — the villain has to tell them in detail what they’re planning to do.
I wasn’t looking for a deep plot in this book, I just wanted to see if I would like Baldewin and Tori as a couple. Didn’t turn out so well.

This was a full book and a short story in the same audio, so I will review it as separate stories.
Breath was about an older mage who left his village due to the homophobic and anti-male mage feelings of the clan. He ran away to a big city and of course got noticed by the bad mages. Baldewin shows up and after a really bad first meeting, started wooing him with food and socks. Surprisingly this worked and they end up together 'cause they were mates. The kings of the Ice and Fire clans go out to meet the clan that Tori came from, end up saving them from the evil mages, and start a dialogue with them.
Tori was a virgin and they end up living with a HEA.
Wish was about a young mage from the southern United States who hunts down the dragons and ends up finding Warin. I'm going to spoil the story by telling yall that they are actually mates and fall for each other instantly.
North was raised by parents who did not like that he was femme and gay. They wanted him to marry a girl and work in the business and to stop looking for dragons. His grandfather was the only one who supported him.
North was also a virgin and they end up living with a HEA.
I love Tori. He has been through so much because of his nasty clan, but he managed to survive and even teach himself magic. I think that Baldewin is the perfect support and mate for Tori.
Sept 2023 Great book. I loved it. Tori and Baldewin are a great couple. Loved Baldewins patience
First review oh, I really enjoyed this one. it was quite different than the first but I adored Baldewin and Tori was great. can´t wait for the next one
Tori grew up in northern Finland in a narrow-minded, homophobic clan of mages, where he was despised as both a gay man and because he couldn't do magic their way. He fled to Helsinski, where he appeared on the radar of both the evil mage clan, and the Fire Dragons. Baldewin is sent to help retrieve the precious mage, but Tori distrust them and refuse to cooperate.
I like this story much more than the previous book. I liked the world building, the characters, the plot. The road trip across Europe sounded like loads of fun, and I love reading that. Tori was embraced by the dragons, at last he was appreciated for what he is, and that part of the book was very interesting.
Baldewin and Tori as a couple was okay, it was very sweet and romantic, but they did not melt my Kindle. I was very invested in their HEA, but they did not make my heart beat even a bit faster.
However, I still enjoyed the book enough already, I already begin reading the next book, as it is all part of plot that spanned several books, and I can't wait to see what happens next.
What I Liked… As I previewed a bit in my last review (see if here). I got to the end of the first book and immediately started BREATH that night, despite being 2 am. Well, this book delivered just as much as the first one. Again, it was a fast-paced book that incorporated drama, adventure, romance, magic, and of course: Dragons!
In their search for mages needed for their ultimate survival, Tori, happens to wander into the boundaries of the seeking spell. Setting off a series of events to persuade him to join their clan. There is some unconventional woo-ing involved…including socks. Yes, you read it correctly: SOCKS. Oh, and a gnome hunt!
Yep, the cast ancillary of characters still delivers! The first novel follows Cameron and Alric, whereas Breath has them in the cast and focuses more on Tori, the mage, and Baldewin, the head of the dragon guard. The authors even pull in members of the other major dragon clan (Ice Dragons) into this book.
There is adventure here also. OK, I am going to try to avoid spoilers: Car chase, magic fights, pissed off Fire Dargon and Ice Dragon Kings, attempted kidnapping, rescue the villagers… Now I am starting to sound like some of AJ’s out there tags she puts on her books!
Speaking of out there tags by the author, AJ. After sending her an email at 2am when I finished the first book and took her how much I enjoyed it. She said she might add a new tag: “Beware of sleep deprivation”
The Bottomline… Breath is ABSOLUTELY on my recommend list. I am truly looking forward to the next book, not to mention all of them to follow. I can easily see this series going on for a while. This is my new favorite paranormal romance series!

I love when authors come up with new ideas and this is a refreshing new series with dragonshifters and mages. It has a continuing arc and focusses in each book on a new couple so far. And I looooove it. I absolutely adore this series.
I Loooved Baldewin and Tori - that was higly entertaining. Also the focus was completely different to the first book. So I enjoyed that this time the mage actually knew he was a mage but did distrust dragons. Not an easy thing to overcome but ...yeah...also we get lovely additions to the cast, like Cassie coming to rescue. It was funny and entertaining. I'm so happy that "Wish" -a shortstory will be released in the Winter Wonderland Giveaway.
This is something I need to say - the continuing arc is not so prominent that you feel like there are huge cliffhangers (which I hate). Each book feels complete when finished.
Took a little while to get used to this one. I’m not usually into road trip stories and that’s partly what it was because Tori is scared of heights. I liked how devoted Baldewin was with all the little gifts and not knowing why. I also liked that Tori is such and awesome mage but it was sad how he was brought up. Favourite part was everyone getting in a rage and Tori laughing. It’ll be interesting where this one goes next. Favourite character was Ravi but he had a little less screen time this time, so Cassie for being her usual bonkers self.

This was ok for me. I felt the same way I did in the first book. At times, the writing seems juvenile or cliche. It's hard to explain. But I felt the same exact way during the first book. It's going good, and then all of a sudden there's a conversation with the characters and my head snaps back because the dialogue doesn't seem to fit.
While it feels like a slow burn, it's really almost insta love. The slow burn feel comes from the fact that at times it just dragged.
A good enjoyable read lending more insight into the world created in the first book Origins. Partly a road trip through norheast Europe which makes me want to visit Helsinki and Warclow in Poland just to find the brass dwarves hidden throughout the city. Partly a budding romance between a mage and dragon who are being hunted by sinister elements. It is also a coming of age tale of how childhood repression can be overturned with nurture and love.
I did not like this one. I was in for some shallow story, but this was SO shallow… I had to actually force myself to finish this one. Tori had his world turned upside down and only a few days and a few gifted meals later, he is all in for a whole new life with the dragons. Two thirds of the book was running around Europe, finally some steamy encounters, a light sprinkle of pushing the overall story forward, finish. While being basically the same plot as book 1. Mage: Doubting if he is good enough. Dragon waiting for the mage to realize he is the one and only. Jaeggi about. Kidnapped mages. With all the angst and general upset, mage realizes to be mate. Mating ceremony. Finish. I did enjoy Alric and Cameron. It was a nice romance and story. But Baldewin and Tori? Just not buying it…

I love the way the Scales 'n' Spells series is shaping up. Breath is a fantastic second outing in the world where dragons and mages are mates. It's the story of how the wonderfully sweet Baldewin wins over the snarky and suspicious (with reason) Tori.
This is another great collab between two authors who know how to world build and who have romantic action/suspense down pat. The pacing and storyline work reall well for me. The cast of supporting characters (many of whom we already know from book 1) is strong, too. The MCs, though, are just great. Baldewin is everything a loving, supportive dragon who's just found his mate ought to be; whilst Tori is very much the product of his upbringing struggling to find his own way in the world. It's just lovely when he realises that Baldewin *is* his way.
5 fabulous stars from me for this fated mates, enemies to lovers, found family treat. I can't wait for the next installment!
