Last week in Atlanta, I had the honor of sitting down with Habitat for Humanity International CEO Jonathan Reckford for a fireside chat at its affiliate conference. The room was full of Habitat leaders from around the world, all working on the same thing: making sure people can afford to live in the communities where they work. But my morning actually started on the ground, seeing what we'd all come to talk about. I toured a newly built Habitat neighborhood and got to meet one of the homeowners about to move in, even surprising her with a gift basket of Amazon devices. She walked me through her new place. The kitchen island, the countertops, and the room her son picked out for himself. You could feel what having a home of her own meant to her, and I can't wait for her to move in. Just a few months ago, Amazon volunteers actually helped build the first homes in Langston Park. It's the kind of neighborhood our Housing Fund is also built around: close to transit, so families keep more of their paycheck and spend less time commuting. It's been five years since we launched the Amazon Housing Fund, committing $3.6 billion to create and preserve more than 35,000 affordable homes. We want to help teachers, healthcare workers, and frontline employees afford to stay in their own community. There are so many parallels in the work Amazon and Habitat do: start local, listen to the people, and build from there. No company, and no organization, solves housing alone. I look forward to HQ2 Community Day every year, and Saturday's event at Met Park was one for the books! This past weekend, thousands of neighbors joined us for Amazon's 3rd annual HQ2 Community Day. Getting to welcome our neighbors onto the HQ2 campus is one of the best parts of this work. From the community library, to the science shows, to our small business partners at the farmers market, there was a little bit of everything — and it was wonderful to celebrate the Amazon Housing Fund's 5-year anniversary alongside it with KellyAnn Kirkpatrick and Jami Benson, MBA. Some days at work don't feel like work at all. 💛 Our Amazon Nashville communications team recently spent an afternoon at the Special Olympics Tennessee Unified Fore Joy Topgolf ProAm, and I'm still smiling about it. We were paired with two incredible Special Olympics athletes, Theo and Will. When the day began, both were a little quiet, taking it all in. But with every swing, every cheer, every high-five, they came out of their shells a little more. By the end, they were full-on teammates! And then one of our teams took home silver in our category. When they placed that medal around Theo's neck, I watched him absolutely blossom. The pride on his face, the joy, the huge smile. I don't think any of us will forget it. Honestly, I'm not sure who was more thrilled, Theo or the rest of us. That's the magic of Unified sports. It puts people side by side as teammates, and the lines that usually separate us just disappear. I'm so proud to work for a company that treats its relationships with the communities where we live and work as a priority, not an afterthought. Amazon in Action is what it’s all about. Showing up matters. Listening matters. Spending time with our neighbors, the way we did last Friday, is one of the best parts of being part of this community. Amazon has been helping with disaster relief since 2017, using our logistics expertise and assets – planes, trucks, delivery vans – to bring much needed supplies to communities hit by wildfires, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and so on. The team has been working to expand those capabilities to bring technology to communities because we’ve learned that just as much as water and diapers, communities need power and connectivity. We've built a handful of solutions that we can now bring in when disaster strikes so that our communities can communicate with family and loved ones, insurance companies, employers, relief services, etc. With the technology built, we wanted to test it out—to see how any Amazon employee (in this case, yours truly) could lend a hand – with the help of other first responders in the area – to get power and connectivity up for our communities. Big thank you to our Disaster Relief team and all the local and national groups we worked with – I learned a ton and met some great people.
