Dear Hiring Committee,
I read on indeed.com that there was an open position for a substitute teacher in (my local)
school district. I think that I would be a good match for this position. My strong social
communication skills and work ethic lead me to believe that I would be a good fit, along with a
few years of experience as a teacher’s assistant.
My social communication and teamwork skills stem from high school, where I was part of a
floriculture team in the FFA Club (Future Farmers of America). We had to communicate, assign
roles, and work together through various scenarios. I currently work at Starbucks, where I am
often told by my coworkers, managers, and customers that I have great customer service and
communication skills. My work ethic is responsible for my recent increase in hours (from about
20 to almost 40 hours a week). Before I worked at Starbucks, I was a waitress at a retirement
home, where I was also recognized for my social skills. One of my coworkers told me I have
“the gift of gab” and that I am capable of making a room full of strangers feel comfortable. I think
that I could bring this same comfort and communication skills into this position.
My experience as a teacher’s assistant has taught me a lot about patience with children, along
with the importance of time management. I have been an assistant teacher in 1st grade, 3rd
grade, 4th grade, and various high school classes. The 3rd grade class I was an assistant for
was the group that showed me teaching was the profession for me. For the most part, I graded
papers and practiced timed readings with the students. Except, there was this one student that I
worked with more often than others, because he needed extra help with his assignments and
refused the teachers help. At first, he did not want my help, but after just a few short days, he
had his assignment completely finished, grinning from ear to ear while showing his teacher and I
what he had done. Every time I left that classroom, I left with the feeling of accomplishment and
pure joy, which is exactly what I want to do for the rest of my life.
I currently have an associate degree in the arts of education, and I am in the middle of obtaining
my bachelor's degree in educational studies. I think that my work ethic and communication
skills, teacher’s assistant experience, and degree make me a great candidate for this position. I
can further present you with my qualifications and a resume at an interview if you wish to
interview me. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
/signed/
