Pearls-on-a-string Sweater

Sizes: 6 (9, 12-18 months // 2, 4, 6, 8, 10) years


Full length from shoulder: approx. 26 (28, 32 // 35, 40, 45, 50, 55) cm [10.25 (11, 12.5 // 13.75, 15.75, 17.75, 19.5,
21.5) in] – or as desired
Width at underarm: approx. 24 (26, 29 // 32, 35, 38, 41, 44) cm [9.5 (10.25, 11.5 // 12.5, 13.75, 15, 16, 17.25) in]
Inner sleeve length: 18 (19, 20 // 21, 25, 28, 33, 37 cm [7 (7.5, 7.75 // 8.25, 9.75, 11, 13, 14.5) in] – or as desired
Needles: circular needle and double pointed needles, sizes 3.5 mm (US 4) and 4.5 mm (US 7)
Gauge: 18 sts x 26 rows = 10 x 10 cm using 4.5 mm needles in st st
Yarn: Knitting for Olive’s Heavy Merino, yardage approx. 225 m / 100 g
The sweater above is knitted in Knitting for Olive’s Heavy Merino – Dusty Moose and Dusty Rose
Yarn requirements: Color 1+2: 50 + 100 (50 + 100, 50 + 150 // 50 + 150, 50 + 200, 50 + 250, 50 + 250, 100 + 300) g

The Pearls-on-a-string Sweater is knitted in the round, from the top down.
The neckline is shaped by knitting short rows.
The sweater has a circular yoke which is embellished with pearls.
It is knitted in 2 colors, but you can easily knit the sweater in one color if you like.
The length of the sweater is easily adjustable as desired.

Cast on 56 (56, 60 // 60, 64, 68, 72, 76) sts using 3.5 mm needles and color 1
Pm at the beginning of the round = center back

Neckline

K 1 round
Knit 2 (2.5, 2.5 // 3, 3, 3, 3.5, 3.5) cm in ribbing: k1, p1
K 1 round

Yoke

Change to 4.5 mm needles

On next round increase as follows:


*k2, m1 (insert left hand needle from front to back, under the bar before the next st and k tbl)*
Repeat from * to * throughout the round
= 84 (84, 90 // 90, 96, 102, 108, 114) sts on your needle

Now begin shaping the neckline by knitting short rows


This pattern uses the German Short Row technique, but any short row technique can be used

Set-up row for short rows


K 1 round and at the same time, place two markers to mark the turning points as follows:
Begin center back
K29 (29, 31 // 31, 33, 35, 37, 39), pm,
K26 (26, 28 // 28, 30, 32, 34, 36), pm,
K29 (29, 31 // 31, 33, 35, 37, 39) = center back

K until you reach the first marker, sm to right hand needle, k1, turn and work double stitch (t&w)
P back to the marker center back, sm to right hand needle

Continue in p until you reach the next marker, sm to right hand needle, p1, t&w
K back to the center back marker, sm to right hand needle

Once again k until you reach the first marker, sm to right hand needle, k3, t&w
P back to the center back marker, sm to right hand needle

Continue in p until you reach the next marker, sm to right hand needle, p3, t&w
K back to the center back marker, sm to right hand needle

K until you reach the first marker, sm to right hand needle, k5, t&w
P back to the center back marker, sm to right hand needle

Continue in p until you reach the next marker, sm to right hand needle, p5, t&w
K until you reach the center back marker, sm to right hand needle

Now continue knitting in the round across all sts


K 1 (1, 1 // 1, 2, 2, 2 , 2) round(s), at the same time remove the 2 turning point markers

On next round increase as follows:

Repeat from * to * throughout the round
= 140 (140, 150 // 150, 160, 170, 180, 190) sts on your needle

K 1 (1, 2 // 2, 3, 3, 4, 5) rounds

On next round, knit in both color 1 and color 2, as follows:

K2 using color 2, *k1 using color 1, k4 using color 2*


Repeat from * to * until 3 sts remain before the marker, k1 using color 1, k2 using color 2

On next round, knit in color 2 ONLY, as follows:

K2, *slip next st (color 1 -st) purlwise to right hand needle, k4*
Repeat from * to * until 3 sts remain before the marker, slip the next st (color 1 -st) purlwise to right hand
needle, k2

Pearls-on-a-string

Now knit the pearls using color 1 for knitting all color 1 -sts

*k using color 2 until you reach the color 1 -st, using color 1 knit a pearl in the color 1-st as follows:

K5 in the color 1 -st, (k1, k1 tbl, k1, k1 tbl, k1), turn,


P the 5 sts, turn,
k5, turn,
p5, turn

Using color 2 (important!) knit the 5 sts together in 1 st by knitting 5 sts together tbl, (the easiest way to do
this is to place the 5 sts as close to the tip of the left hand needle as possible)*

Repeat from * to * throughout the round, k the last 2 sts using color 2
From this point, finish the rest of the piece in color 2

K 2 rounds

On next round increase as follows:


*k5, m1*
Repeat from * to * throughout the round
= 168 (168, 180 // 180, 192, 204, 216, 228) sts on your needle

K 8 rounds

Size 6 months:
Continue to section: Separate stitches for the sleeves

Size 9 months:
On next round inc 16 evenly across the round:

Separate stitches for the sleeves

Now put sts aside on scrap yarn for sleeves, as follows:

K24 (26, 28 // 30, 33, 35, 37, 40)


Place the next 36 (40, 43 // 45, 46, 49, 52, 53) sts on scrap yarn,
Knit the front piece: 48 (52, 56 // 60, 66, 70, 74, 80) sts
Place the next 36 (40, 43 // 45, 46, 49, 52, 53) sts on scrap yarn,
k24 (26, 28 // 30, 33, 35, 37, 40) until you reach the center back marker

Now continue knitting across the body sts


= 96 (104, 112 // 120, 132, 140, 148, 160) on your needle

Continue knitting straight up until the piece from the arm hole measures 16 (17, 18 / 19, 22, 25, 28, 31) cm

Sleeves

Place the 36 (40, 43 // 45, 46, 49, 52, 53) sts from the scrap yarn on 4.5 mm double pointed needles
Pm at the beginning of the round and continue knitting in the round in st st

On the 7th round, decrease as follows:


Start at the beginning of the round
K1, k2tog, k until 3 sts remain before the marker, sl1k, k1, psso

If you have an uneven number of sts, p the last 2 sts together
Bind off in ribbing (k the k sts, p the p sts)

Sew the holes under the arms together and weave in all the loose ends
Wash and block
