An easy, quick, double-thick headband to keep your ears warm with a little bit of 1960s cool-girl
charm. This project will help you learn (or practice): casting on, double-knitting, casting off, and
seaming. These headbands make a great scrap yarn project or a quick gift!

NEEDLES & TOOLS YARN

• US 8 (5 mm) knitting needles (you can use Knit Picks Swish Worsted, or substitute for
flat or circular) another worsted weight yarn: ~35 yards (32
• tapestry needle for seaming meters)

GAUGE MEASUREMENTS
20st & 26 rows in a 4” (10cm) swatch • 2.5” (6.5 cm) wide
• 20” (51 cm) length -- or custom length based
on your own head circumference

TECHNIQUES:
I have a full video tutorial for this headband if you’d like to follow along step-by-step!

- double knitting
- casting off in double knitting
- long-tail cast-on
- mattress stitch
- weaving in ends

ABBREVIATIONS
- k: knit (eg, “k1” = “knit 1 stitch”)
- k2tog: knit 2 stitches together. Put your needle through two adjacent stitches knitwise, then
knit one stitch, joining the two stitches into one (shown in cast off tutorial above)
- RS: “right side” of the headband (visible when worn)
- WS: “wrong side” of the headband (not visible when worn)
- sl1wyif: move the yarn to the front as if to purl, slip the stitch from your left needle to your
right needle purlwise without purling it. Move the yarn to the back between the needles before
you move on to the next knit stitch.

PATTERN
Use long-tail cast-on to cast on 26 stitches to your US 8 (5 mm) needles.

Now you’ll begin working in double knitting:

Repeat (for both RS & WS): *k1, sl1wyif* repeat until end

Continue working each row in the double knitting repeat until your headband measures 20” (51 cm)
long -- to customize the length, measure your head circumference around where you’d wear a
headband then subtract about 1.5” (4 cm) to account for stretch.

Once you’ve worked to the length you’d like, cast off all stitches like this:
Repeat: k2tog, *k2tog, pass first stitch on right needle over the stitch you just knit* repeat between
** until you have 1 stitch left on your right needle.
Cut your yarn, leaving an 8” (20 cm) tail that you’ll use for seaming the ends together into a circle, and
pass it through the remaining stitch on your needle.

Use your tapestry needle and the end you left to use mattress stitch to seam the two edges of your
headband to each other.

Weave in all ends, then block your headband according to your yarn’s care instructions.
