함수 여러 가지 다른 칼륨 채널이 신경계의 전기 신호와 관련된 것으로 알려져 있다. 한 클래스는 탈극화에 의해 활성화되는 반면 두 번째 클래스는 그렇지 않다. 후자를 내적으로 정류 K+ 채널이라고 하며, 칼륨이 세포 밖으로 흐르기는커녕 세포 안으로 흐르도록 하는 경향이 더 크다. 칼륨 이온 전도성의 이 비대칭은 근육 세포와 뉴런의 흥분성에 중요한 역할을 한다. 이 유전자에 의해 인코딩된 단백질은 일체형 막 단백질이며 내부 정류기 칼륨 채널 계열의 구성원이다. 인코딩된 단백질은 이 단백질 계열의 다른 구성원에 비해 작은 단일 전도성을 가지고 있다. 이 유전자에 대해 동일한 단백질을 인코딩하는 두 개의 대본변형이 발견되었다.[5]
