Avatar at SDCC 2023
Here’s your rundown of the Avatar franchise’s presence at San Diego Comic-Con this year:
👉 [CANCELLED] Avatar: Braving the Elements—Live! on Thursday July 20th at 1pm!
The Braving the Elements panel this year has been ***cancelled*** last minute due to the SAG-AFTRA strike meaning that hosts Janet Varney (the voice of Korra) and Dante Basco (the voice of Zuko) aren’t attending SDCC.
This is the panel that Avatar Studios revealed their first animated movie, the adult Team Avatar one, at last year; we don’t know what would have been revealed, if anything, this year.
It’s possible the soundtrack that was just announced today completely out of the blue was supposed to be revealed at this panel.
👉 Water, Earth, Fire, Air: Continuing the Avatar Legacy on Saturday, July 22nd at 12:30pm!
This year’s publishing panel is still on. This is where we could get news on novels, comics, etc.
This is the panel that the Azula in the Spirit Temple solo graphic novel was announced at last year, as well as the new Korra comic trilogy/trio, the first of which is supposed to be focused on Mako. This SDCC, we’re hoping that Mako comic is fully revealed, as well as maybe preview pages for Azula, and an even longer shot would be finding out who the next ATLA and/or TLOK comics will be about (Azula/Mai/Ty Lee; Mako/Bolin/Asami??)
It’s also possible with The Legacy of Yangchen just having coming out this week that the next Chronicles of the Avatar novel will be announced, revealing which Avatar the next books will be about, but they haven’t previously had news at comic cons so it’s not a sure deal.
👉 Mattel ATLA collector set
Mattel is releasing an Avatar: The Last Airbender collector set on the Barbie movie’s release date this Friday!
It will be available at the Mattel Creations booth, check out more info here.
👉 The Legacy of Yangchen exclusive edition
An exclusive edition of The Legacy of Yangchen is available at booth 1216!
That’s it as far as I know. It’s a pretty low-key SDCC this year across the industry due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. For Avatar, keep an eye out for potential publishing news and don’t have any expectations beyond that.
Just announced at NYCC: Next year′s comics slate consists of an Azula solo graphic novel in Summer 2023 and a Mako solo graphic novel later in the year!
Following Azula’s solo graphic novel titled Azula in the Spirit Temple, announced at SDCC and coming Summer 2023, we now have news that an untitled Mako solo graphic novel will then come out later in the year!
Both are expected to be the first in a “trilogy”/collection of standalone stories focusing on one character each, three ATLA solos starting with Azula and three TLOK solos starting with Mako!
(Source: Murphy’s Multiverse at NYCC)
Previously there has already been one such collection for ATLA, focusing on the female characters of Team Avatar: Katara (Katara and the Pirate’s Silver), Toph (Toph Beifong’s Metalbending Academy), and Suki (Suki, Alone).
Who do you think will be the other characters in these new collections? I’m personally thinking Azula/Mai/Ty Lee and Mako/Bolin/Asami!
Lastly, a quick update on yesterday’s Braving the Elements panel: there was no news! This was the panel that the Aang movie was revealed at at SDCC, so it was possible there would be news at the same panel at NYCC, but there wasn’t any.
Coming this December: “The Ultimate Aang & Korra Collection” ATLA & TLOK box set with 80+ minutes of NEW bonus features and 8 collectible art cards
There’s a new complete series bundle box set coming on December 7th, 2021, and it has some notable features that make it more newsworthy than other box sets.
First, it’s interesting that they’re referring to this by Aang and Korra’s names rather than the show titles. This feels like it could be moving to a new norm where more Avatars have media in the future, which would make sense because it’s highly likely most, if not all, Avatar Studios shows and movies feature an Avatar and/or their era. Moving forward, it could be cleaner to refer to the shows/eras by the Avatars’ names rather than long show titles (for example a hypothetical “Kyoshi Collection”).
Second, and also on the topic of naming, one of the bonus features is an interview with the “Avatarverse creators” so I guess that’s a point for “Avatarverse” being the official (or unofficial???) name of the franchise. “Avatar: The Last Airbender” has mostly been used as an umbrella term including other media/eras, but recently there have been a lot of (informal?) uses of “Avatarverse". This feels like the first formal/“official” use, but it’s still not conclusive. We’ll see if some kind of official name/naming scheme becomes clear when Avatar Studios projects are announced.
Lastly, this is the first release in a long time to include new bonus features, which is why I emphasized it so much in the title. I doubt they will contain any monumental reveals or news, but it still is notable and something to watch for.
Here’s the official description:
“The ultimate Aang and Korra Blu-ray collection features over an hour of all-new and exclusive bonus features including an Auditory Exploration with the Avatarverse Creators, a conversation with Janet Varney and Dante Bosco [sic], hosts of the Avatar: Braving the Elements podcast, and 8 collectible art cards! Experience the complete Avatar saga with Aang and Korra. From the discovery of Avatar Aang in the iceberg in Avatar: The Last Airbender to Korra’s heroic journey to set things right in Republic City through The Legend of Korra, relive all the epic air, earth, water and firebending in the ultimate Avatar Collection.”
Update! Here’s a better look at everything that comes in this box set.
