First look at Avatar: The Last Airbender, coming 2024
Check out the first look teaser video for Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series, including the new official logo and release date, revealed at the Tudum Global Fan Event today! No footage from in the show, just the four elements, but man is it epic.
Netflix lists live-action ATLA as “Coming Soon” at 2023 upfront
Netflix held its first ever upfront today, a long-standard industry event where studios advertise their upcoming content to advertisers; it’s Netflix’s first because this is their first year with ads.
As part of its upfront, Netflix officially listed their live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series as “Coming Soon” in their “Fall 2023 Series Slate Highlights”. However, Netflix DID NOT announce that the show is coming in the fall.
My best understanding of the current situation is that they don’t know when VFX will be done, so they don’t know when the show will be ready. As I’ve said before, this is honestly a good thing because it means they’re not rushing it out before it’s ready– it’ll be done when it’s done. So it COULD be this fall, but it could also be earlier or later– once they find that they’re done, then they can figure out when to release it. It could be super quickly from that point (since, you know, it’s done), or they could intentionally decide to wait for a later strategic release date. We can’t speculate one way or another right now, besides that it’s officially coming “soon”!
Adult Gaang movie international release dates
Here are the officially listed release dates around the world so far for Avatar Studios’ first movie, following Aang and Team Avatar as adults and coming to theaters.
Wednesday October 8th 2025:
- Belgium
Thursday October 9th 2025:
- Austria
- Brazil
- Czech Republic
- Germany
- Hungary
- Slovakia
Friday October 10th 2025:
- Canada
- Poland
- USA
Wednesday October 15th 2025:
- France
Friday October 24th 2025:
- Turkey
These seem to be pretty standard differences from the “main” US release date as most movies, i.e. it’s typical for movies to come out in Belgium on Wednesday two days before they come out in the US on Friday.
And once again, these are the official listings so far, the movie will be released in many more countries that just don’t have public release dates available yet.
Exclusive: Animated Zuko movie coming to theaters confirmed for 2026 with a projected date of October 9th, 2026!
Last month we hit you with the mother of all Avatar News exclusives for 2025, and now we’re going even further with the big ticket item of 2026.
We have new confirmation from our sources at Paramount (Avatar Studios’ parent company and the owner of the Avatar franchise) that the previously-reported Zuko-focused movie is officially currently on Paramount’s schedule for theatrical release in 2026!
This will be Avatar Studios’ second animated movie, following the theatrical release of their first, feature Aang’s Team Avatar as adults, which has a publicly confirmed release date of Friday October 10th, 2025.
Based on Avatar Studios’ plans of one movie and one show per year, we can currently project that the second movie will come a year after the first, taking the same Friday slot in the next year’s calendar: October 9th, 2026.
AGAIN: The day and month are a projection, but the year, 2026, is currently official at Paramount.
Right now we know less about the Zuko movie than the adult Gaang movie. We don’t know what time period the Zuko movie will take place in. We literally just know it’s a movie with a Zuko-focused storyline. It’s probably a safe assumption that the Zuko movie will take place in a similar time period as the adult Gaang movie, but we do know that the three movies of their first-three-years plan are not a trilogy, but three separate standalone stories (at least, that was their plan last year). Therefore, it’s totally possible that this one will surprise us– imagine, for example, that it could actually be about old Zuko in the era of Korra!
One thing we can be pretty sure of, assuming Zuko is young or an adult in the movie: Dante Basco will return to voice him, as he’s already attached to voice adult Zuko in the 2025 movie!
The image above is official artwork of Zuko from Avatar Studios edited to have Zuko’s canon adult hairstyle.
BREAKING: Avatar Studios’ first animated movie, featuring Aang and Team Avatar as young adults, hits theaters on October 10th, 2025
It has been pushed back a year from the late 2024 date Paramount, Avatar Studios’ parent company, previously estimated. I do want to confirm that the this was a real internal Paramount estimate; obviously they didn’t announce it publicly because they weren’t sure yet (which is why you follow us for early non-final stuff!), but now they’re confident enough on their progress so far to set a date.
The movie is currently designated “Untitled Animated Aang Avatar movie”, but we know a bit more than that: check out the official tag for everything we know!
Get ready for 10.10.2025
No, Netlix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series is not coming this year
There have been some news articles today claiming that the new show is coming this year because the Netflix page says 2020.
That page has looked like that since the show was announced in 2018.
Given that they haven’t even started casting yet, it’s essentially impossible for the first season to be done within this year.
As always, it depends on when they actually start, but even if they were to announce that casting begins today, an estimated release date of March/April 2021 (the GOT slot) is pretty much the earliest it could be.
Hello! I saw on your sidebar you put Live Action ATLA: 2020. Is that the estimated release date (since the rest of the sidebars' dates are release dates)? But afaik Bryke also said that they just gonna start casting in early 2020, so is it plausible for a 2020 release? Thank you!
Ah that’s outdated, I put 2020 when the show was announced in 2018 but now it’s looking more like 2021. I’ll update it but it’ll still just be an unofficial estimate.
Also, they never said they’re gonna start casting in 2020. The last update we got was on January 3rd 2019 when they said that open casting would start “likely sometime later this year” (meaning 2019), but clearly even that was an underestimation.
