After exactly ten years on this journey, it’s time to say goodbye to Avatar News

Over the course of a decade from September 6th, 2013 to September 6th, 2023, Avatar News has gone from a little blog for keeping up with The Legend of Korra when it was airing, to a blessing that has changed my life, and, I hope, been a positive factor in the lives of the countless people who have crossed paths with it in the end.

From the smallest moments of connection in our Avatar News community that made my day, to the biggest exclusives that put me on the map, thank you for coming on this journey with me, whether you were a supporter or a hater, whether you were a casual fan or in the highest ranks of the cast and crew itself– we all experienced this together.

A new chapter begins, and I have to leave Avatar News behind. Call it destiny, but I feel like it was meant to be that this came with the ten-year anniversary– a finish line I never could have imagined on that day a decade ago.

And like the cycle of the seasons, the cycle of the Avatar began anew….

The Avatar’s Fury tattoos!

About a year-and-a-half ago, I did an overpainting/edit of Alexandre Cabanel’s famous 1847 painting The Fallen Angel on a whim, transforming the subject into Aang.

It went a bit viral and to my surprise people started getting it as a tattoo, which is definitely one of the coolest, most mindblowing things to have come out of running Avatar News for almost ten years now.

Avatar News Wrapped 2022

Welcome to Avatar News Wrapped 2022! It was a BIG year. 💥

The biggest news of 2022 was the full live-action ATLA cast with a whopping 90.4 million impressions across all our official Avatar News social media accounts and site, followed close behind by the adult Gaang movie with 85.6 million. 🤯

Switching gears from Avatar news to Avatar News, this was by far our biggest year ever!

Both Twitter and Instagram hit that magical milestone of 100 thousand followers in 2022, and our total followers across all social media went from under 100K to almost 250K!

I’ve been counting down to this for a couple of months now and it finally happened: Avatar News has crossed 100k followers on Tumblr, Twitter, and Instagram combined!

As of writing this:

Thank you– yes you, reading this– for being what makes this crazy achievement exist!

Something interesting is that I started the Tumblr in 2013, the Twitter in 2016, and the Instagram in 2020, but the follower counts are the opposite of what you might think, with the newest being biggest and the oldest being “smallest”. And I know that the vast majority of people on Twitter and Instagram followed since 2021, so most of the tens of thousands of you (!!!) are relatively new here! But whether you’ve been around since Korra was airing or joined the party as the new shows and movies ramp up, I’m happy to have you along for the ride!

This art is inspired by the official TLOK Book 2 mid-season poster, which I traced Korra and Wan from. I then added Aang and Kyoshi in the same art style. The background is inspired by the official ATLA Book 3 finale artwork. The Chinese text is taken from the book Jinora reads in Wan Shi Tong’s library in The Legend of Korra Book Two: Spirits, Chapter Ten: A New Spiritual Age.

I love how you worded this as a question when you clearly already knew the answer. 😂 Yes, there is and for anyone wondering why I didn’t post about it I guess this is a good opportunity to tell you about a change in the content I’m going to be posting.

More Avatar news doesn’t mean I have more time in my life to run Avatar News. Moving forward with way more stuff coming, I’m gonna be focusing only on “bigger” stuff, for example the movie from Avatar Studios. For “smaller” stuff like this comic, you can most likely find it retweeted or shared to my Instagram story, but I won’t be talking/posting about it myself. I’ve already been doing this with stuff I consider “smaller” and just personally less interesting/relevant to myself, like action figures, and I thought this new change was gonna happen with the live-action series two years ago lol, but better late than never.

If you’re interested in the stuff Avatar News won’t be covering very much, there’s lots of other sites/social media accounts that do post about it!

If you don’t follow Avatar News on Twitter or Instagram, you might not know that I got the amazing opportunity to interview Avatar/Korra composer Jeremy Zuckerman!

I just had a one-hour talk with him and it was seriously one of the best hours of my life. The main focus was covering specific themes from both shows, but we also went into the current status of soundtrack releases, his involvement in the Netflix live-action series, and… some hypotheticals, I’ll leave it at that. :)

I learned so much and got to discuss some of my favorite things in the world with one of the people who made them, and he did pass on some new information so I’m really excited to share!

It’ll take a little while to type it up and edit and stuff to create a polished final product. For now, I posted a point-form early access summary including the new info on my Avatar News Patreon! Check it out if you’re interested, otherwise stay tuned for the final published interview! Again, it was such a cool conversation so I’m really excited to share it!

Welcome to the new Avatar News website!

To go with the recent rebrand from korranews to Avatar News, I just finished the new site redesign. It’s a pretty big change with the goal of showing more information in less space, since the focus of the site/blog has shifted to longer, more in-depth posts (while Twitter and Instagram are for quicker shorter updates and discussion).

The domain (URL) change to avatarnews.co is also now finalized. All korranews.com (and korranews.tumblr.com, and avatar-news.tumblr.com) links should properly redirect to the right page on avatarnews.co!

The new site is fully desktop/laptop-, tablet-, and mobile-friendly (basically I’m saying all screen sizes lol), and it’s pretty nice if I do say so myself, so please enjoy the next time you’re on it! :)

✨ I also set up a memory lane page showing past headers, logos, etc. Shout out if you remember some of those older ones! I’ve learned a lot doing the graphic design and web development for korranews/Avatar News myself, so it’s a nice retrospective on that if you’re interested in that kind of thing.
