I answered one of these calls recently because the number was on a local exchange.

A recorded message said I was supposed to press one to schedule a fibre upgrade for my Bell modem. (I'm not on Bell because they don't have high speed internet to my house. Also Bell doesn't call me from my neighbourhood exchange.)

So I pressed one to get scammed. The real person quickly pivoted from scheduling an upgrade to wanting to know if I had a laptop or desktop computer, into needing me to log into my desktop computer.

I said I couldn't do that right now (unsaid: because I was cuddling a puppy) and he abruptly hung up on me. Rude.

This news item says they found a much more cooperative victim.

John Gruber, writing in Daring Fireball said at the time: If you told me that the ads in Apple News have been sold by Taboola for the last few years, I’d have said, “Oh, that makes sense.” Because the ads in Apple News — at least the ones I see1 — already look like chumbox Taboola ads. Even worse, they’re incredibly repetitious. I use Apple News to keep up on topics that I don’t find in sources I pay for (The Guardian and The New York Times). But there’s no way I’m going to pay the exorbitant price Apple wants for Apple News+ – £13 – because, while you get more publications, you still get ads. And those ads have gotten worse recently. Ordered NE5532 opamps (10 MHz gain-bandwidth product, 9 volts/μs). Put them in my project, wasn't performing correctly. Set up the standard test circuit (gain of 10, non-inverting, output load 800 ohms + 100 pF) and started measuring them...

These things actually have a GBW of only ~520 kHz! And a maximum slew rate of less than 1.3 volts/μs! They're absolute junk!

I don't know what part they remarked to get these. When I first suspected they were fakes, I thought maybe the ancient and cheap NJM4558 (aka 4558D) - but even that should have a 1 MHz bandwidth. Maybe 4558s that failed quality control? 🤣 Anyone have an idea what they might be?

Others created online marketplaces dedicated to supporting scams - one stop shops for buying social media accounts, pictures, SIM cards, and ready-made scam sites. Some groups even offer registered corporations with valid business licenses. This ecosystem has supercharged the raging billion-dollar scam epidemic, empowering anyone to become a scammer.

This is absolutely nuts. And the main thing that jumps out at me is old folks actually answer their phones when they don't know who's calling. WHY???

I made an #OpenToWork post on #LinkedIn today partly as an experiment, and as before was immediately inundated with HR bots. I spent a few minutes from time to time stringing one along, out of curiosity. One way I know it's a bot is that no human recruiter would stick with me for that long a duration given the nonsense I was entering. Anyway, at one point it emitted that there was a job it was "recruiting" for, titled "Generative AI & LLM Remediation Consultant | United States (Remote/Onsite)" at a company named "Independent Consultant (Contract Role)". It's fairly clear to me that the bot was tasked with constructing fake job listings based off information people share. I can only guess what its actual purpose is.
