The Waltones - Spell It Out

THE WALTONES
Spell It Out
1988 Medium Cool

Notes :
The Waltones were a guitar pop band from Manchester, active as part of a scene centred around The Boardwalk club and Dave Haslam's Temperance nights at The Hacienda, and releasing records between 1987 and 1989.
They released four singles (Downhill, She Looks Right Through Me, Spell It Out and The Deepest) and and album (The Deepest) on the Medium Cool label - also home to The Raw Herbs, The Siddeleys and Rain - as well as contributing two tracks (The British Disease and Bold) to the label's sampler album Edge of the Road. They also featured on the Sarah Champion-compiled Bop Cassettes release Manchester: North of England, which also included James, The Milltown Brothers, The Man From Delmonte, The Railway Children, Inspiral Carpets and Dub Sex.
Influences came from the typical indie-pop canon of the day (Orange Juice and The Beatles) although frequent use of a harmonica gave them - along with other of the Medium Cool artists - something of a country rock feel as well. Although firmly in the guitar pop tradition, the band were championed by fanzines and followers of the growing pre-baggy Manchester scene, many of who were also listening to hip-hop and house music. None of these influences seeped into The Waltones' work, although befringed guitarist Mark Collins later went on to success with The Charlatans.
As well as counting as one of Manchester's many 'great lost pop hopes' the band also provided a welcome touch of fun to a city whose music scene often takes itself too seriously. Along with The Man From Delmonte, they were one of few bands of the time and place who appeared to actually enjoy themselves and exhibited very little in the way of Manc 'attitude' - indeed, the album track first released to the public on the Manchester: North of England cassette, was encouragingly titled Smile.
A compilation of pretty much all of their recordings was released on Cherry Red Records in 2007.

The Waltones - Deepest

THE WALTONES
Deepest
1989 Medium Cool

Notes :
One of the most beautiful albums from late 80's period is ''Deepest'' by great Manchester band The Waltones.
Any band that have members as Mark Collins (later The Charlatans) on guitar and Clint Boon (later Inspiral Carpets) on organ (two of the most talented musicians from madchester era), must be great.
Clint Boon organ sound  is evidenth on tracks as ''She's Everywhere But Here'', ''What's Going Wrong'', ''I've Got Nothing'', etc.

I've tried to find some info about this album on the net, here's most interesting :

'' The band consists of Alex Fyans (drums), Mark Collins (guitar), James Knox (vocals, harmonica) and Manny Lee (bass, backing vocals). Their debut release was the "Downhill" single, released by Medium Cool Records in April 1987, which, like the follow-up, "She Looks Right Through Me", placed on the UK Independent Chart. Third single "Spell It Out" gave them their biggest success, peaking at number 20 on the Indie Singles Chart. Debut album ''Deepest'' eventually saw a release in 1989, by which time they had lost momentum. The band also recorded a session for BBC Radio 1's John Peel Show in August 1988.
In 1990, the band moved to the Midnight Music label, and recorded a second album ''Re-invent the Wheel'' co-produced by Kevin Harris. After recording was completed, Fyans left the group to be replaced by Adrian Donohue. The band relaunched themselves as Candlestick Park. One single, "All the Time in the World", was issued from the album sessions, and a collaboration with Manchester-based House producers K-Klass was mooted. However the album was never issued and the band split, as Collins went on to greater success with The Charlatans. ''

'' The all-pervasive rise of Madchester stars The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Inspiral Carpets has latterly overshadowed the fact that the Manchester hinterland was nurturing its fair share of quality jangly guitar pop in the mid-to-late 80s. Along with The Railway Children and early Creation hopefuls The Bodines, The Waltones tilted at greatness in this post-Smiths/pre-baggy void, recording four singles and one album, The Deepest, for Andy Wake’s Medium Cool label circa 1987-89.
Ironically, it wasn’t the advent of Madchester that would directly sink The Waltones. Medium Cool’s distributor, Red Rhino, went bankrupt after The Deepest sold out its first pressing, leaving band and label to flounder before guitarist Mark Collins quit and joined The Charlatans. ''

The Corn Dollies - Be Small Again

THE CORN DOLLIES
Be Small Again
1987 Medium Cool

Notes :
The Corn Dollies were UK indie band from London, active between 1987 and 1991.
Originally comprising Steve Musham (vocals and guitar), Tim Sales (guitar), Steve Ridder (bass), & Jack Hoser (drums) .They released several singles on Medium Cool Records. Ridder returned to his native USA & was replaced by Stuart Knowler who played Bass on "Be Small Again" which was an indie hit, reaching #28 on the independent chart. The follow-up (originally released on the band's own Farm label), "Forever Steven", produced by Robert Forster of The Go-Betweens reached #16, and was a Single of the Week in both Sounds and Record Mirror.
Other singles followed namely; "Map of the world" & "Shake" (Released July 11 1988). Touring frequently they built up a solid UK fan base & gained further popularity throughout Europe after a tour in 1989, building a particularly strong fanbase in Spain. Jono Podmore (violin) joined in early 89 to boost the live line up, Knowler left in 1990 to be replaced by the returning American,Steve Ridder.
When Medium Cool collapsed, they moved to Midnight Music, releasing two albums, the first of which was a compilation that pulled together all of the band's singles and b sides from the Medium Cool period. In support of the album 'Wrecked', they undertook a national tour supporting Ian McCulloch.
Shortly afterwards, Steve Ridder again returned to the States, and Tim Sales left the band. Ridder was replaced on bass by Noko for the single 'Joyrider' and the following tours in the UK and Europe.
He also played bass on much of the final, unreleased, album 'Past Caring'.
The band split in 1991.
