The Waltones - Spell It Out

THE WALTONES
Spell It Out
1988 Medium Cool

Notes :
The Waltones were a guitar pop band from Manchester, active as part of a scene centred around The Boardwalk club and Dave Haslam's Temperance nights at The Hacienda, and releasing records between 1987 and 1989.
They released four singles (Downhill, She Looks Right Through Me, Spell It Out and The Deepest) and and album (The Deepest) on the Medium Cool label - also home to The Raw Herbs, The Siddeleys and Rain - as well as contributing two tracks (The British Disease and Bold) to the label's sampler album Edge of the Road. They also featured on the Sarah Champion-compiled Bop Cassettes release Manchester: North of England, which also included James, The Milltown Brothers, The Man From Delmonte, The Railway Children, Inspiral Carpets and Dub Sex.
Influences came from the typical indie-pop canon of the day (Orange Juice and The Beatles) although frequent use of a harmonica gave them - along with other of the Medium Cool artists - something of a country rock feel as well. Although firmly in the guitar pop tradition, the band were championed by fanzines and followers of the growing pre-baggy Manchester scene, many of who were also listening to hip-hop and house music. None of these influences seeped into The Waltones' work, although befringed guitarist Mark Collins later went on to success with The Charlatans.
As well as counting as one of Manchester's many 'great lost pop hopes' the band also provided a welcome touch of fun to a city whose music scene often takes itself too seriously. Along with The Man From Delmonte, they were one of few bands of the time and place who appeared to actually enjoy themselves and exhibited very little in the way of Manc 'attitude' - indeed, the album track first released to the public on the Manchester: North of England cassette, was encouragingly titled Smile.
A compilation of pretty much all of their recordings was released on Cherry Red Records in 2007.

The Bodines - Decide

THE BODINES
Decide
1989 Play Hard Records

The Bodines, comprising of Mike Ryan, Paul Brotherton, Tim Burwood and Paul Lilley, emerged from Glossop, England, near Manchester, in 1985. Fronted by the floppy-fringed Ryan, they became one of the better-known outfits from a crop of jangly indie bands that sprang up around that time. They made their debut with “God Bless”, an early release by Creation Records. Shortly afterwards, Lilley was replaced on drums by John Rowland. Two further singles followed; their second, “Therese”, was included on the famous C86 compilation album. Like their contemporaries Primal Scream, The Mighty Lemon Drops and the Weather Prophets, The Bodines went on to sign up with a major label with great hopes of transferring their success to the mainstream charts. The group joined Magnet Records, where a remix of “Therese” became their major label debut.

The Bodines’s debut album, Played (produced by Ian Broudie, later to enjoy success as a recording artist as the Lightning Seeds) was a fine jangly pop artifact, but it only scraped in to #94 in the album charts, in the summer of 1987. Sadly, none of the Bodines’ singles for Magnet got into the top 75. Under pressure for failing to deliver the hit record that their major label backers required, the Bodines split up, albeit temporarily. Rowland went on to play with The Rainkings.

In 1989, a reformed line-up of Ryan, Brotherton, new bassist Ian Watson, and new drummer Spencer Birtwistle released the single “Decide” on Manchester’s Play Hard label and contributed a further new track to the same label’s Hand To Mouth compilation. A couple of years later, Ryan reappeared with a new band called Medalark Eleven (mis-named after Harlem Globetrotters’ Meadowlark Lemon), assisted by Gareth Thomas on bass and Adrian Donohue on drums. Reunited with Creation Records, they released a couple of singles ahead of Shaped Up, Shipped Out, an album of pleasant, if rather unexceptional indie pop.

Catwalk was great early 90's UK indie band fronted by late 80's/early 90's Melody Maker journalist Chris Roberts. They released two singles ''Damascus'' & ''Ballerina Country'', featuring guest musicians Kim Deal and Tanya Donelly, also produced by Ed Buller.
''Damascus'' featured on Indie Top 20 Vol. 14 in 1992 and that's how i find out about this obscure band. For more than 8 years i was looking for this two singles, finally i received copies and both will be posted on the blog.

After Catwalk, Chris Roberts together with Richard Bell (ex-The Blue Aeroplanes) formed Scalaland and released one album and two singles in 1995 for Mother Records.
