If you want to use QEMU/KVM on Linux as your virtualization environment, you can install and start a virtual OpenCCU system with the following steps.

Requirements

  • A Linux system with QEMU/KVM installed (incl. qemu-img).
  • For the virtual machine: 2 CPU cores, 2 GB of RAM and a virtual disk with at least 6 GB (recommended: 8 GB).
  • A network bridge on the host through which the VM is directly accessible in the local network (in the following example via the tap interface tap0).
  • A supported USB or network-based radio module, e.g. HmIP-RFUSB, HB-RF-USB-2 or HB-RF-ETH.

Installation

  1. Download For QEMU/KVM, the *.ova is used. Download it from Releases. Note: The *-ova.zip is only required for later WebUI updates of the already installed VM. For the initial installation, the *.ova is sufficient.

  2. Extract the OVA QEMU/KVM cannot import an OVA in one step. Therefore, extract the file first:

    mkdir OpenCCU
    cd OpenCCU
    tar xvf ../OpenCCU-X.XX.XX.YYYYMMDD.ova
  3. Convert VMDK → QCOW2 Convert the OpenCCU.vmdk contained in the OVA into QEMU's own *.qcow2 format:

    qemu-img convert -O qcow2 OpenCCU.vmdk OpenCCU.qcow2
  4. Enlarge the QCOW2 The virtual disk of the OVA has a size of 6 GB. Enlarge it e.g. to 8 GB so that the user partition (/usr/local) has sufficient space; it is adjusted automatically during the first start:

    qemu-img resize OpenCCU.qcow2 8G
  5. First start Start OpenCCU with QEMU/KVM, e.g. like this:

    qemu-system-x86_64 -vnc :1 -m 2048 -smp 2 --enable-kvm \
                       -drive file=OpenCCU.qcow2,if=virtio \
                       -netdev tap,id=net0,ifname=tap0,script=no,downscript=no \
                       -device virtio-net-pci,netdev=net0 \
                       -chardev socket,path=/tmp/qga.sock,server=on,wait=off,id=qga0 \
                       -device virtio-serial -device virtserialport,chardev=qga0,name=org.qemu.guest_agent.0

You can then connect via VNC, e.g.:

    vncviewer :1

The VM console should be visible and show the startup. Afterwards, the WebUI is accessible at http://openccu/ (or the IP address assigned via DHCP). Afterwards, the first steps after installation help with the further setup.

  6. Pass through a USB radio module (optional) To pass a USB radio module connected to the host through to the VM, add a USB controller and the device to the start command, e.g. for an HB-RF-USB:

    -device qemu-xhci -device usb-host,vendorid=0x0403,productid=0x6f70

The USB IDs of the common radio modules are:

    Radio module vendorid productid
    HmIP-RFUSB 0x1b1f 0xc020
    HB-RF-USB 0x0403 0x6f70
    HB-RF-USB-2 0x10c4 0x8c07

Updates

Updates are performed via the update function of the WebUI or manually with the *-ova.zip archive.
