 It is an accessible and distinctly atmospheric laden variety of the form we get here, and one that probably is closer to the neo-progressive tradition than anything else. We get a liberal amount of careful and elegant synthesizer and keyboard parts here that flow along in a manner not too dissimilar to an artist such as Vangelis. These exist as standalone interludes as well as combined with rhythms, a firm bass and carefully wandering guitars that combine into a flowing and atmospheric laden landscape of the kind that fans of neo-progressive rock will find to be strikingly familiar sounding. Occasionally with darker toned electric guitars added to the bottom end for a more impact-oriented and striking type of arrangement. Janais used to release music under the project name Echo Us, and those familiar with and that enjoy those albums should find themselves right at home with this first production released under the artist name Ethan Janais too. metanoia sets off with the opulent opener “Katabasis”, drawing dramatic, cinematic soundscapes mixed with electronic influences. The soft, clear vocals of Marc Martins alternate with sharp growls and pierce through constantly changing riffs. PERSEFONE balances soft passages with intense walls of sound on tracks like “Aware of Being Watched” – in which clean vocals and jazzy sections alternate with intense riffing carried by dense drumming – while solid, rich sound takes on orchestral dimensions on songs such as “Leap of Faith”. Vivid and dynamic instrumentation, tempo and rhythm make up the intense ride “Merkabah”, showcasing the band’s hardest yet most vulnerable sides as screams and blast beats are followed by soft instrumentation – spanning the song’s intensity to its maximum. A special surprise is the 11-minute masterpiece “Consciousness Pt. 3”, which continues a series of songs from the band’s fourth album Spiritual Migration (2013). The album closes with another opulent set of songs, “Anabasis Pt. 1”, “Anabasis Pt. 2” and “Anabasis Pt. 3”. “Anabasis Pt. 1” starts off with calm, dreamy piano sounds, drifting over to the intense “Anabasis Pt. 2” and leading seamlessly into “Anabasis Pt. 3”, gently closing the album with a cinematic outro."

Composed of both newly written material and songs that haven’t found their way onto a release before, Hirschbrunnen is a treasure trove of wonders, impressively covering ambient, electronic, prog and psychedelic rock. Much like his work with Elder, the songs DiSalvo’s written here reveal themselves gradually, taking the listener on six uniquely stimulating instrumental journeys. Comparisons to his band are bound to be made, and perhaps Hirschbrunnen’s nearest relative would be The Gold And Silver Sessions EP from 2019, which saw the four-piece embrace a more ambient, prog-influenced sound.

On album number seven Duda extends his musical explorations to include dark Scandinavian and Slavic folk referencing bands like Heilung or Wardruna. Through Shaded Woods is completely devoid of electronics and is the first album in Duda’s discography, on which he plays all instruments. 

Mariusz Duda appears to have put the personal darkness that inspired his previous albums behind him, as more optimistic elements shine through in his new music. The album becoming musically "brighter" as it progresses – from the atmospheric introduction of "Navvie" through to the title track, which leads the listener to a melodious, trance like "Oblivion", echoing the style of Dead Can Dance.

Over a layer strings and oozing synthetic chords we’re brought into a state of self awareness, building for just over a minute before dropping us into the start of ‘Confessional Lock’ which could easily be mistaken for a modern descendent of Pink Floyd’s ‘Comfortably Numb’. Guitars ring across a widely drawn soundscape as Kyle’s vocals stretch across this musical infinity. They’re strong, the sign of someone who’s in complete control of his talent. He uses different voices throughout the song (and throughout the album itself), something that draws you in, especially on headphones.

...My Arrival offers music that is keyboard-led, more than anything else.  It is gentle, reserved, and laser-focused on melody.  It lathers, bubbles, and foams with luxurious, pulsating beauty.
Don’t get me wrong here: the album has plenty of wonderful instrumentals and guitar work, including some great solos.  It has moments of oomph and energy.  However, the album almost doesn’t qualify as “rock”, per se.  It has more pop elements found in the rich, catchy choruses and the milder style.  You will also hear plenty of electronic elements, making for an album fomenting with atmosphere and space.  In the end, exploring this style feels even more ambitious than just creating another progressive rock album.
