This new album is Lappo’s most focused effort to date - the tight songwriting and sharp hooks result in an album that flows at an exciting pace. A vocal-forward album, Lappo leans even harder into pop tactics to provide catchy choruses supported by crafty song structures and melodic dynamism. Fans of the solo artist’s prior work will rejoice in the continued display of Lappo’s rip-roaring guitar soloing on Skyline, while also finding new intrigue in the riffs and synth concoctions that he boasts this time around.

Lyrically, the album confronts the past and the personal with forward-looking vigor. The zeal of the opening track “Never Look Back” is paired nicely with the electrifying lead single “One More Day”. With their anthemic choruses, this opening one-two punch is sure to hook the listener to Skyline. Shimmery tracks like “When Was the Last Time” and ”Skyline” put a positive lens on the past, while "Soulless Streets” and “Forevers” offer more somber takes on lost memories and frayed personal connections respectively. “Hold This Spark” exemplifies Lappo’s ability to meld prog metal theatrics with pop-banger ebbs and flows.

The album's title is a play on the absurdity of life, reflecting on how major life events (such as death) can be explained easily with logic but are incredibly difficult to overcome in reality.

On this album Lappo returns to his prog metal roots, but folds in inspirations from 90’s industrial, 00’s pop and 2010’s prog. Tracks like the opener "Recurring Dreams" display Lappo’s familiar lush prog-metal leanings, while songs like "Where Nothing Exists" and "Shy-Hearted" are the most aggressive and energetic tracks he has ever done. The album goes full pop on the Britney/Max Martin-esque "Break the Spell" and the power-balladry of "Bloodline", while the song "Light Pollution" presents a modern take on 80s AOR. As a whole, Reasonable Nonsense is an eclectic and engaging listen.

Lyrically, the album highlights the contrasts between existentialism and nihilism. While "Break the Spell" is a triumph over anxiety, "Unenviable Inevitable" questions the meaning of life and doubts the ultimate value of existence. Other tracks take a more personal bend: "Light Pollution" is about excessive jealousy and "Long  one Years" is a song about grief. On a lighter note, the twangy “Falling” celebrates letting old habits die and embracing the path forward. Reasonable Nonsense masterfully weaves its way through some of life’s contradictions over the course of its 10 eclectic tracks.

This new album sees Lappo double-down on his pop rock leanings, with hefty synth-pop and prog influences to keep listeners on their toes. The album starts with the tenacious AOR-tinged “Neverending Storm” - a nod to Lappo’s prior prog metal leanings. In contrast, the floaty synthwave of “Last of Her Kind” and the disco swagger of “Creature Comforts” embody Lappo's love of pop music. With this new album, Lappo reaches new highs vocally - both figuratively and literally. On “Move On” his voice seamlessly hops between a soothing baritone and a soaring falsetto, while on "New Lines" he delivers an anthemic chorus bound to thrill any rock fan. Songs like "My World on Pause" and "Monochrome" combine glistening pop rock choruses with playful dueling piano and guitar solos. Lappo shows off his compositional finesse elsewhere with tracks like the cinematic “Out of Touch” and the luminous album closer “No Cloud”. As a whole, Abandoned Corners is an eclectic and delightful listen.

Genre-wise, Naturealism can best be described as cosmic progressive metal with a hefty dose of pop elements. There’s driving riffs and catchy hooks aplenty here, as the tight songwriting ensures that every track holds the right balance of direction and surprise. The album’s 10 tracks all seamlessly flow into one another, yet are all strong enough to stand alone as singles as well.

To sum up the album's sound, it's basically what would happen if Ghost were inspired by Rush instead of Blue Oyster Cult, and if Devin Townsend took the producer's seat. Trancevoicer is equal parts catchy and otherworldly. The earworm vocal melodies pair nicely with the wormhole created by Egor's cosmic synths and extraterrestrial guitar solos. This new album is a space prog-metal concept record about two warring worlds. The story follows a renegade who decides to betray his home planet to save another one from occupation after a cosmic catastrophe. Through his journey, other turncoats join him in pursuit of a detached but peaceful life. Both worlds reach the brink of destruction in the end: one from stubbornness, mistrust and solar flares, and another from possession, greed and wars.

Description/Reviews: 

The second thing to notice is the influence of Devin Townsend. The album kicks off with a heavy, djent-y sound mixed with some very Townsend-esque vocalisations and ‘tweedley’ lead riffs. A nice mix of ethereal sounding prog metal. There is lots of quick, technical riffs throughout, mixed in with some death metal styled riffing and vocals. It sounds almost like a mix sometimes of Gojira and Devin Townsend at points, particularly on Imperfection.
