Making a Difference

A cool day after hot ones
called for a major pruning chore...
which called for a fire.
This was followed by smaller jobs
like sprucing up a couple
of garden frogs.
We enjoyed attending to a few tasks
that make a difference
on a day when making a difference didn't involve
enduring high temperatures!

on the way

On the way to deadhead our do-nothing-roses (see previous post)
I paused to take in the beauty of our lilies.

Memorial Day 2017

After storms and more rain yesterday,
my husband kept busy cleaning out his shed
and pulling weeds to prepare for this new cover of mulch.
Definitely a full and productive day!

Several additional pieces of yard art were uncovered in the shed.
I found places for them!

Haircuts!

It was time for a haircut!
So we began with THIS one - beginning at the ground and working up.
Still have a bit of trimming of the tops to do....
and will add mulch to the newly-exposed ground,
but SO pleased with the result.
Maybe a hosta or two to help fill in the bare spots,
but I suspect it will only be a matter of time until the Lily of the Valley claim this space!

Another Day/Another Garden

Thinking we would see progress at the local County Extension Garden,
we were met by only Nature's progress.
Apparently, the Master Gardeners responsible for maintaining this garden
are still busy in their personal gardens...
 Nature, however, did not disappoint.

The Lilac Department was especially glorious!

We'll return soon.
Meanwhile, my husband is out early mowing the yard
before the rains expected the next two days...
I'll pull a few more dandelions and transplant a few more hosta
to a a flowerbed freshly groomed yesterday.
What's keeping YOU occupied in YOUR garden?

April 22

A newly transplanted heuchera blows in the breeze....
 while other perennials bloom heartily.

It's been a cool but productive day in the flower beds today.
Edging,
weeding,
transplanting.

busy hands are happy hands

After sanding, a mixture of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits
will be applied to some aged-wood outdoor furnishes
to make them last for another season.
Keeps the men in our household busy--
and busy hands are happy hands!

First We Mow

April 8, 2017
Finally dry enough to get the job done.
What a perfect day for outdoor work--
even if the flower beds were a little too wet to work in...

First Day of Summer

He spent the morning weeding and trimming in our beds this morning.
This clematis is hidden from view from our house, so it wasn't until he sent in the phot
from is cell phone's camera that I realized it was blooming!
A major chore was accomplished with the trimming of The Three Sisters
as we've come to call these three viburnum bushes growing along our property line.
For better or for worse, this is how we've been trimming them.
Somehow it appeals to us, but the look requires periodic "pedicures"!
In another part of our yard sits this potted tomato plant.
We are very inexperienced in the vegetable-cultivation department.
Maybe that explains our excitement over finding FOUR tomatoes on the vine last Saturday.
Why in the world have we not done this sooner???

A Big Deal

We're taking our gardening to a whole new level!
Planted "fruit" today!
It's staked, watered, and ready to grow!
(I know.  This is elementary.  But it's a big deal to us.)

Hodge Podge

A hodge-podge of photos showing results of one man's labor
on the 8th of March 2016.

Pre-Spring Cleaning

He took advantage of the mild morning temperatures to clean out the two front flower beds.
What a difference!
....and THIS one...
Gearing up for the NEXT phase....
Stay tuned.
