NEW RECORDS
If your vibe is vintage soundtracks, check out a few of the limited-edition LPs released today for Record Store Day. Whovians can look forward to a modern release of The Genesis of the Daleks, a really fun audio-drama style record that presents one of Tom Baker's best serials. And for the first time, the soundtracks to Peter Cushing's 1960s Doctor Who films are available- as a double-album in yellow vinyl! See below for a groovy video clip (note: the second track contains an ascending bass line similar to the James Bond theme). The 2LP set also includes sound effects by Gerry Anderson maestro, Barry Gray! If you're more into black velvet and gothic mansions, there is also a Dark Shadows score pressed on purple vinyl, and a silver edition of Nosferatu. Spy Vibers might also find a Piero Umiliani release of La Legge dei Gangsters. Other notable RSD releases include The Animals, David Bowie, The Easybeats, The Kinks, Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo), The Remains, Ravi Shankar, A-Ha, Mick Karn, Cambodian and Japanese 60s garage rock, 13th Floor Elevators, Gerry Casale (Devo), Monster-A-Go-Go vol 1, and Across the Universe. FABULOUS 1960s
Saturday Pin-Ups: Fabulous. Fabulous magazine began in 1964 and featured photographs, pin-ups, and articles for the youth market. As we saw in teen magazines in the US during the 1960s, covers often sported pop idols like The Monkees, The Beatles, and Batman. Fabulous was interesting for its better coverage of UK stars like Rolling Stones, Manfred Mann, and Small Faces. The publication later changed its name to Fabulous 208, and by the 1970s became known as Fab208. The Man From U.N.C.L.E. covers are of interest, of course, but I especially loved seeing a few Beatles images that hadn't crossed the Spy Vibe radar: Paul McCartney as Chaplin and a wonderful sequence of John Lennon as detective Sherlock Holmes. Also of note is the January 1966 issue with Space-Age theme. All the fun of Space Fashion must have leaked out the air lock during the Manfred Mann photo session. Stock up the fridge and warn the neighbors because Spy Vibe is having a 1960s garage party weekend. Track Four: The Kinks emerged from humble blues beginnings (see video #2 below) to define their sound in 1964. Here is their fourth single (the follow-up to You Really Got Me), All Day and All Through the Night -with some encouragement from stage dancers.

Happy Birthday to Ray Davies! There are many great clips on Youtube of the Kinks and Davies' solo career. In honor of Ray, the amazing mash-up of his You Really Got Me with Get Back. Love it! Want to learn more about Davies? I recommend that Spy Vibers check out the excellent interview he did on Fresh Air in 2008 during the release of Working Man's Cafe. It's interesting to hear a consummate storyteller talk about studying the people around him and gathering characters and experiences to write about. MOD EXHIBIT
The music, the fashion, the scooters! Spy Vibers interested in Mod Culture should check out the exhibit, Reading Steady Go: Life through the eyes of a 1960s Mod, at the Reading Museum: "The early Mod pioneers were known as 'Modernists', because of their liking for Modern Jazz. They approved of all things new and reveled in the coffee bars and supermarkets that came to Reading in the late 1950s. The town’s Mods soaked up the influences and latest trends from London. They listened to black American R & B artists, wore smooth cropped hairstyles, tailored jackets and neat Italian rounded-collar shirts. Our exhibition intends to be an insight into the real Mod world. It goes beyond the popular myths to show their passion for music, fashion and being young." MUSIC STARS ALIGN
The music stars have aligned. Just As Spy Vibe covered the release last week of a new graphic novel about The Beatles early Hamburg days, the love story between Astrid Kirchherr and Stuart Sutcliffe, and Sutcliffe's handing the bass role in the band to Paul McCartney, it appears that we were riding the same wave as Gibson Guitars. Gibson announced today that McCartney has been named "best bass guitar player of all time" for his great influence in shaping popular music. They even tread into Spy Vibe's story here: "To think it almost didn't happen at all - McCartney became the Fab Four's bassist by default after original bassist Stuart Sutcliffe left the band to return to art school." Read more at Gibson here. McCartney began as a great music fan himself and has remained so throughout his career. There are lovely moments with Paul and Carl Perkins worth seeking out on vhs or youtube. McCartney once received a special gift from his wife, the photographer Linda McCartney, who gave him Bill Black's original upright bass that was used on the Heartbreak Hotel recording sessions by his boyhood hero, Elvis Presley!
