BOND CAPTION CONTEST

Ian Fleming Publications is running a caption contest this week! To celebrate the release of the original James Bond comic strips by Titan Books, readers are invited to enter captions to a vintage strip drawn by the great John McLusky for The Express. Winners will receive copies of the Dr No and Goldfinger comic strip collections and cool 007 merchandise. Click the "naked" strip below to download a larger image. More info at IFP. In other news, my next episode on Cocktail Nation is coming up! In the meantime, you can hear Episode #1 (Danger Man) and Episode #2 (The 10th Victim), Epsiode #3 (On Her Majesty's Secret Service). In each segment I do a short introduction to a film or TV series and share some classic (often rare) music. Enjoy!

CONTEST WINNERS

The winners of Spy Vibe's vintage TV spy book contest are Michael from North Carolina, USA and Richard from Leeds, UK. Your books will be shipped out after the holidays! These Spy Vibe agents shared some thoughts about their favorite 1960s spies. Michael wrote about Secret Agent: "Even as a kid I was intrigued by the line "They've given you a number and taken 'way your name." My young self wrestled with the existential implications of that - a concept indicative of the more serious spy culture of the 60s." And speaking about The Avengers, Richard said, "Steed was all that was good about the Britain that has now disappeared. A debonair, charming English gent with a taste in fine wines and good living. His assistants were all fun, glamorous and full of energy, which reflected the so-called "Swingin' Sixties". When it was shown in colour, it was perfect for the time. So exciting and bright, and sometimes exotic. Mother was fun and full of wonder, as were his numerous bases where he'd have his chats with Steed. The Avengers made the 60s chic and I think the world would have been a poorer place without it too." Thanks to all of the Spy Vibers who entered the contest. I like to offer prizes to readers once or twice a year, so look out for more contests in the future. Happy Monday, Spy Vibers!

SPY VIBE FRIDAY

Why face the crowds out there when you can get cool stuff for free right here on Spy Vibe? It's been a while since we've had a proper give-away contest here and I've picked up a couple of 50-year-old treasures to share with two lucky readers. First the rules: All you you have to do is send an email to me at spyvibe[at]gmail.com with either "Avengers" or "Secret Agent" in the title (depending on which prize you want). And in the body of the e-mail, please describe some of your favorite 1960s spies and why you think they are good examples of 1960s culture. Also include your mailing address. I will choose 2 winners at random on December 16th. Notification will be by e-mail and prizes will be shipped to you at no cost. All emails will be deleted after the contest. Spy Vibe maintains the right to print/quote your spy descriptions to share with readers. Want to share your ideas but don't need a prize? That's OK! I'd love to hear from you. Now, let's get on to the prizes! Prize One: The Avengers: The Laugh Was on Lazarus by John Garforth, US paperback edition, 1967. Prize Two: Secret Agent/Danger Man: Departure Deferred by W. Howard Baker, US paperback edition, 1966. As you can see below, both books sport wonderful photo sills and designs featuring actors Patrick McGoohan, Diana Rigg, and Patrick Macnee. Cool reads and fun artifacts from the great Spy Boom. Good Luck! **NOTE: I had to update my address after posting the contest info, so please re-send your entry if you haven't done so yet. Apologies and Thanks! -Jason
