FAB DRESSES

One of the more interesting corners of 1960s merchandising was the production of Beatles shift dresses. Images of music and film stars had appeared on goods in the past, but the 1960s offered the unique inclusion of ready-to-wear fashion. In the post-Warhol world of Pop Art, manufacturers cultivated a market for cloth and paper garments that combined notions of pop imagery, advertising, disposability, and idolatry. GET SMART POP

One of the treats of sifting through the archeology of 1960s pop culture is the constant discovery of little treasures. While gearing up to make some collages of spy tv ads and listings a while back, I came across this neat series of portraits of Agent 99 (Barbara Feldon of Get Smart) by Andy Warhol. Apologies to Get Smart collectors, who have probably had this on their radar for 50 years, but these are quite cool additions to my inner landscape of mod spy imagery from the period. These ran originally in the March 5th, 1966 edition of TV Guide. BATMAN GALLANTS

The Batman theme by Neil Hefti quickly settled into the pop consciousness in the 1960s, spawning what would become decades of cover versions, references, and parodies. One gem from from the show's debut year 1966 was this tribute by The Gallants. The European sleeve design was pure Pop Art and really captured the show's sensibilities, as well as the current work by Andy Warhol and other artists. Released on Capital as a 7" 45 single, the singer cried out, "Oh Batman. We need you now!" In light of the recent news of Adam West's passing, it sounds more poignant than ever.
