BLU BASKERVILLE

New release: Spy Vibers waiting for a region 1 Blu-ray release of The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959) can look forward to finally seeing the film in hi-def next month. Twilight Time is dropping a limited-edition Blu-ray on June 14th that will include some great special features such as commentary tracks by our friend Lee Pfieffer (Cinema Retro) and other film historians, Christopher Lee's actor's notebook and readings from the original Sherlock Holmes book, and much more! Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous story gets the gorgeously gothic Hammer treatment in The Hound of the Baskervilles, starring Peter Cushing as a wry and brilliant Sherlock Holmes, AndrĂ© Morell as an unusually sensible Dr. Watson, and Christopher Lee as Sir Henry Baskerville, seemingly threatened by a ghastly family curse. Horror stalwart Terence Fisher directs, and James Bernard provides the atmospheric music. Fans interested in seeing more work by director Terence Fisher should check out his television work for ITC's The Adventures of Robin Hood and Sword of Freedom, and his many Hammer films such as The Curse of Frankenstein, Horror of Dracula, The Mummy, and The Devil Rides Out. Fisher returned to Conan Doyle with Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace (1962), this time with Christopher Lee donning the deerstalker and pipe as the great detective. The Hound of the Baskervilles Blu-ray is limited to 3,000 units. You can pre-order at Screen Archives Entertainment here. The game's afoot! NEW SHERLOCK BOOK

New release: Otto Penzler will release a new compilation of Sherlock Holmes stories this fall. As the editor of Vintage Crime and Black Lizard anthologies, and proprietor of the Mysterious Bookshop in New York, Penzler is deeply immersed in the rich history of genre fiction. Spy Vibers may also remember him for his scholarly writings about collecting Ian Fleming's publications and the sale of his historic collection in 2010. Now Penzler has his sights set on the great detective in The Big Book of Sherlock Holmes Stories. US editions will be released by Pantheon (HC) and Vintage (PB, Kindle) on October 27th. UK editions will be published by Head of Zeus (HC) and Vintage (PB). In addition, Goldsboro Books in the UK is offering a limited hardcover edition signed by the author (available September 28th). More info at AmazonAmazon UK, and Head of Zeus. Penzler previously published a Sherlock Holmes library in the 1990s. From the press release: "Arguably no other character in history has been so enduringly popular as Sherlock Holmes. From his first appearance, in Arthur Conan Doyle's 1887 novella A Study in Scarlet, readers have loved reading about him—and writers have loved writing about him. Here, Otto Penzler collects 83 wonderful stories about Holmes and Dr. John Watson, the majority of which will be new to readers. Among these pages are tales by acclaimed Sherlockians Leslie S. Klinger, Laurie R. King, Lyndsay Faye and Daniel Stashower; pastiches by literary luminaries both classic (Kenneth Millar, P. G. Wodehouse, Dorothy B. Hughes) and current (Anne Perry, Stephen King, Neil Gaiman); and parodies by Conan Doyle's contemporaries James M. Barrie, O. Henry, and August Derleth." JEREMY DUNS: TOP 10 SPY GADGETS

JEREMY DUNS: TOP 10 SPY GADGETS
Bugged rocks and exploding rats? Our Man Jeremy Duns, author of Free Agent, has posted his top-10 list of real spy gadgets on his blog, The Debrief. Along with some rather wild inventions, Spy Vibers will recognize a few toys that showed up in the fictional tales of John Drake (Danger Man) and James Bond. If you are interested in seeing more on the illustrated history of spy gadgets, check out the book The Ultimate Spy by Keith Melton. By the way, the hardcover edition of Jeremy's novel Free Agent is currently on sale for under $3 on Amazon. Penguin is gearing up to launch the paperback edition on June 29th in the US with this fantastic design by Jonathan Gray.
Don't miss it!

For spy book lovers and collectors, you may also want to check out the auction catalog for the Otto Penzler Collection. From The Debrief: On April 8, the famed bookseller, publisher and friend to many thriller-writers Otto Penzler is selling off part of his massive collection at the Swann Auction Galleries in New York - specifically, his British espionage and thrillers. This must be the finest collection of its kind in the world, and offers both a deep insight into the history of the genre, and is part of that history. It includes rare correspondence between Ian Fleming and Richard Chopping about the jacket art for the James Bond novels, signed first editions by Eric Ambler, Len Deighton, Graham Greene, John le Carré, Adam Hall and Dennis Wheatley, scarce editions by William le Queux and E Phillips Oppenheim... and much more besides. The asking prices are a little too high for me, but what a gorgeous, gorgeous catalogue. You could read it for hours. -Jeremy Duns
