TOKYO BEAT 1964

Spy Vibers might be trapped inside during this pandemic, but that doesn't mean you can't travel! There are lots of museums and destinations that are offering virtual tours and experiences right now. And after our recent two-part radio series about the Japanese ninja/spy series Phantom Agents on Spy Vibe, I thought it would be fun to take the Tardis on a trip to 1964 Tokyo. Youth Culture: Life Magazine helped to fuel a fascination with Japan in anticipation of the Summer Olympics scheduled for October 1964 with a special September issue. Ambassador Edwin O. Reischauer wrote about the partnership between the US and Japan (I have a spy novel out with agents now that includes some shocking secrets Reischauer kept from the public!), and author Yukio Mishima shared his frustrations with both cultures. Much of the issue focussed on tensions between traditional and contemporary society, with features like "The Modern Paradoxes" by Brian Brake and "The Talisman," a short story of rebellion by Masao Yamakawa. A major highlight was "The Young in Revolt," an in-depth essay photographed by Michael Rougier (seen in top photo below). Rougier and correspondent Robert Morse followed a sub-culture of teens obsessed with a Tokyo Beatles band and captured both dynamic abandon and intimate fellowship among the "lost ones." The aim may have been to document disaffected youth, but the images tell us much more about cultural revolution and new styles of expression. Life magazine's timing couldn't have been better, as A Hard Days Night debuted in Japan in August of 1964 and Beatlemania is still going strong.  Forty years later, I filmed and photographed The Silver Beats, a Beatles cover band at the Tokyo Cavern Club, as they re-enacted the period night after night with scholarly zeal and quite a lot of musical talent. Although our scene was probably more subdued than Rougier's in '64, it was a highlight of my art life to publish a photo of the group in Rolling Stone and to help the band land a spot in Liverpool's Beatles Week events. The series of images below from 1964 serve as a valuable window into early '60s Japan, exploding with new-found freedom and the pulse of Beat Music. WORLD OF SPIES

New release: LIFE Inside the World of Spies: The Lives They Lead. The Secrets They Keep. Published in August by Time/Life, this deluxe magazine-format book is now on the shelves at local pharmacies, grocers, and bookshops in the States. From the press release: "The truth about espionage goes much deeper than the Bond types that fill our big screen. Mary Queen of Scots, the Man in the Iron Mask, Mata Hari, the Enigma machine, the CIA, Watergate, and WikiLeaks: Spies and spying have rewritten human history and now affect how we all live. With sections on codes and cryptography, moles and double agents, wiretapping, detectives, and even the age-old art of seduction, this fascinating book reveals the true stories of the bold spies who- whether motivated by patriotism, greed, or a love of adventure- risked everything. Rare and remarkable photos from the archives of LIFE magazine, plus illuminating text, make this a compelling read for anyone with an interest in the practiced- and powerful- art of deception." Spy Vibe has always been more about the world of fictional/fantasy spies rather than the real thing. Somehow the image of romancing foreign agents on international trips in an Aston Martin seems more accessible than the true world of deception and betrayal. But it has been interesting to look at true cases and perhaps see where some of the great writers got their ideas. And what gadget lover doesn't enjoy seeing just how ingenious those espionage boffins were during the Cold War. I suppose with our current chapter of the Cold War now emerging around us, it will interesting, and perhaps prudent, to have a stronger context in history- lest we be doomed to repeat it. LIFE Inside the World of Spies: The Lives They Lead. The Secrets They Keep. is also available on AmazonFor Spy Vibe radio action, check out my episodes of Cocktail Nation: Episode #1 (Danger Man) and Episode #2 (The 10th Victim), Epsiode #3 (On Her Majesty's Secret Service), Episode #4 (Roger Moore/The Saint), and Episode #5 (The Avengers), and Episode #6 (The Prisoner), Episode #7 (The Ipcress File). Enjoy!
