Speakout!

Here's an odd one for you, it's a yoof orientated magazine from Leeds Building Society (in 1988). I've highlighted issue 13 (thanks to Brandon Kapp on the '2000AD tat & chat' group on Facebook) for the Brian Bolland cover obviously...

Speakout #13, Summer 1988

Other issues don't have Bolland covers or indeed any comics related content at all. Here are a couple of examples.

Speakout #8, Spring 1987 1988

As the ebay seller says...
This was an unusual quarterly magazine produced by The Leeds
Building Society for the 'YOOF' of 1987 - hopefully enticing them
in as future savers. In style and content it is very derivative of
Smash Hits and No1 but considering this was produced and printed
in Leeds this was a passable effort in the Genre. This magazine was
distributed in branches and at Colleges and was a freebie...
To be fair the Leeds kept financial matters and advice out of
the publication (apart from an Add on the back page)..
The rest of the magazine's 30 pages was made up of very
reasonable content with interviews, charts and letters from
Readers.. Competently put together and graphically well ordered

UPDATED: To help pass the time in the iso-cubes

I've looked at Comics calendars before (see here and here) but didn't realise there had ever been any Judge Dredd calendars before until a conversation about it popped up on the '2000AD & Judge Dredd tat and chat' facebook group.

I started looking for traditional 'wall' calendars for this post but I've decided to expand it to look at all types of calendars. All new material is in red.

So with thanks to Ian Anorak Hollingsworth (and ebay!) here we go...

The 1989 calendar - presumably published by Titan as the images look like the covers from their reprint volumes

Early Brian Bolland commercial advert for burger bar up for sale

For anyone who recalls my piece last week on an early Brian Bolland Christmas card being offered for sale on ebay (starting price £50; sale price £50) the same seller is now offering as a lot an item he describes thus...

clearing the old studio....a hamburgher menu by brian bolland whilst at Norwich school of art...in very good condition..a 2 sided paper plate sized table menu sheet...layout by me...pictures by brian.....12 inches across....produced in 71 or 72.....this is one of his first ever commercial printed pieces...very hard to find..as 99% were used...the burgers were and still are top notch....still open...a little slice of history...look at those prices..fries at 5p...burgers at 45p....happy days ..a rare example of very very early bb art....

No sign of a Bolland signature so you'll have to take the seller's word for it I guess

The menu is for sale here and the opening bid is £100 - the auction closes just after 7pm on Wednesday (16th).

Here's that Christmas card again :)
