David Pugh - convention artwork, part 1

Following on from my interview with comics artist (and now writer) David Pugh (here) I thought I'd look back at his (many) contributions to comic art convention programmes that he made over the years.

So without further ado, here's part one...

United Kingdom Comic Art Convention (UKCAC) 1989 - 'Loner' by David Pugh

United Kingdom Comic Art Convention (UKCAC) 1990 - Dan Dare and Digby - by David Pugh

United Kingdom Comic Art Convention (UKCAC) 1991

David Pugh signing Loner comic collection - today

This is today folks, don't forget!

For all Bristol-based comic fans...great news, to celebrate the publication of Loner the comics artist David Pugh will be making a rare appearance at your Forbidden Planet store on Saturday 14th September, from 1pm

MEAN. TOUGH. RUTHLESS. ALONE!
Ex-mercenary Loner always works alone. Even if it means being on an alien planet as the sole member of one of the spacecraft Wildcat s exploration teams!
With only his customised six-shooter, Babe , and some alien fur balls as company, Loner must contend with psychic aliens, subterranean monstrosities, and angry shapeshifters. He might be the toughest, but can he survive being shrunk, melted, and transformed on a planet that seems to want him dead?
David Pugh moved from advertising to comics in 1977 when he started to draw Sláine for 2000 AD. He later worked on the Wildcat and on Dan Dare for Eagle. His most successful work in the American industry was on Neil Gaiman's Phage: Shadowdeath. He has also worked for Games Workshop and produced the graphic novel Obvious Tactics for Black Library Publishing. He is a published author and helped set up Bus Fare, a charity set up to help migrant workers and refugees reunite with their families.

A signed copy can be ordered here

David has also shared this image of his plans for September (Friday) 13th + (Saturday) 14th

Here's some of Loner's more obscure appearances, first up is the 1990 holiday special - a 4 pages strip illustrated by Sandy James.

Then there's a 4 pages strip in the 1991 annual by Eric Bradbury...

and finally from the 1989 UKCAC programme...

Loner - a collector's guide - part 1

In anticipation of the Treasury of British comics reprint of Loner (coming this September it says here) - here's the start of my two part guide to collecting all things Loner.

Issue 1 (of 7) contains 29 pages reprinting episodes 1-6 from Wildcat

Issue 2 contains 30 pages of reprints from episodes 7-12 of the Wildcat stories.

Issue 3 has 30 pages again - this time reprints from new Eagle 29/04/89 - 20/05/89 [4 episodes] plus 2 one-off stories [01/07/89 and 29/07/89]

Issue 4 - 30 pages again, 15 by David Pugh and 15 by Eric Bradbury (who took over when David Pugh switched to drawing Dan Dare). Three one-off stories (19/08/89, 30/09/89 & 14/10/89) and then five episodes of a continuing story from new Eagle (21/10/89 - 18/11/89).

Issue 5 - 28 pages of Eric Bradbury art from new Eagle 25/11/89 - 27/01/90 (so that's 10 issues)

Issue 6 - 9 issues of new Eagle reprints (03/02/90 - 31/03/90), by Eric Bradbury

Issue 7 - 3 issues of Eric Bradbury new Eagle reprints (07/04/90 - 21/04/90) plus a 5 page strip by David Pugh that I can't find where it was originally printed. There's also another Wildcat reprint and 2 x 2000ad reprints (art by Chris Weston; art by Ron Smith)

So all in all there's 104 pages of David Pugh art followed by 84 pages of Eric Bradbury art - maybe that's how Treasury will split Loner into 2 volumes - who knows?

Wildcat Winter Special

As promised a long way back here are some highlights of the hard to find Wildcat Winter Special

It's graced by an Ian Kennedy cover

Keith Page (illustrator of multiple Commando comics, among many other things) tackles Joe Alien

David Pugh provides one of his trademark outrageous aliens (for the Loner strip).

This John Gillatt page shows him drawing all the key characters here...
