Sean Phillips painting

I really should feature the work of Sean Phillips on the blog more (sigh) but he seems to be doing ok without my help.

Anyway, I spotted this painting up for sale on that ebay (here) with bids starting at £500 and thought I'd flag it up to all you fans of Sean's work. Bidding ends on Tuesday night, good luck if you bid!

Here's an image from Sean's website showing the painting 'Nude, 2005'

Gosh comics - new signings announced

In Gosh comics the other evening and I spotted these posters for upcoming signings - not sure I've seen them on the Gosh Twitter feed yet. Anyway, dates for your diary in May & July.
Interestingly, Mary's events listing for 2023 (here) notes that she'll be at the Cartoon Museum the evening before (so, Friday 12th May) doing a talk (with Bryan) about the book. Look out for tickets for that going on sale some point soon.

Comics festival 2000 - part 2

I've previously looked at the great spin-off 'decks of cards' that Kev Sutherland put together for the comics festivals he ran in the early '00s. So far I've looked at...

The (2001) hearts suit of cards is here
The (2001) diamonds suit of cards is here
The (2001) clubs suit of cards is here
The (2001) spades suit of cards is here

He then repeated the exercise in 2003...
Part 1 of the 2003 deck of cards is here
Part 2 of the 2003 deck of cards is here

Part 3 of the 2003 deck of cards is here

And the 2003 London (winter) comics festival here
And then some extra items here
And then the cards from the 2003 London (winter) comics festival here
And then my first look at the 2004 charity deck of trump cards here and part two is here
Comics festival 2004 calendar is here

And now the A2 leaflet /programme for the Comics 2000 festival has been found and the 'deck of cards' theme is present, but just in terms of illustrations provided for the programme. So without further ado let's see who's in here...Part 1 was here and now on with part 2...

Ok, so here we have art (in descending order) by Sean Phillips, Charlie Adlard, Neil Googe (drawing Bazooka Jules), Roger Langridge (centred, Doctors Who) Marc Laming draws 2 people in coats, Methaphrog (yellow person - this is actually Martin Nitram from their first comic series Strange weather lately), Hunt Emerson draws his characters and Terry Wiley draws a King Kong themed image.

and again from top to bottom...
Shaun Bryan draws Octobriana, Staz Johnson draws Bat-women, Simon Perrins draws a man with a colourful coat, John Higgins draws Razorjack (centre, black & white image), Steve Yeowell draws daffodils, George draws Judge Dredd, Tim Perkins draws a warrior nun, Al Davison draws a man with a pendant and Andrew Livesey draws a superhero all in blue.

Thanks to Simon Miller for allowing me to share this with you all...

London super comic convention, 2012-2017

So far in my look at the various souvenir programmes that were produced to tie-in with comic conventions I've looked at...

Bristol comic expo (2004-2014) is here
London comic festival 2003 is here
Kev Sutherland festival original art is here
A 'Lawless 2019' miscellany is here
Boys and Girls exhibitions of the 1950s and '60s is here
Glasgow comic art convention is here
Edinburgh art convention is here
UKCAC - part 1 is here
UKCAC - part 2 is here

...and today it's the turn of London super comic convention booklets. Slightly larger than A5 these acted as guide to the con and gave (some) artists the chance to present some sketches. I'll look at those sketches another day but for starters we'll just go with the programmes.

Wikipedia tells me (here) that the London super comic convention ran from 2012 to 2017 so there should be 6 programmes to collect, here's what I've found so far...I didn't go to any of these convention so I don't know if 6 programmes exist...

London super comic convention, 2012, rear cover art by David Petersen

And then the cards from the 2003 London (winter) comics festival here

A number of these images have been provided thanks to friend of the blog Simon Miller. One of the image he sent was the one below showing his collection of the cards.

The image on the right was of interest because it gave me the best 'evidence' that a final deck of cards existed. I'd previously been alerted to its existence by friend of the blog Ewan Brownlow, he'd provided me with the images below

Not a bad start but not it left a lot of cards to find! Luckily Simon has filled in all the gaps in one fell swoop :) So here's part 1 of my look at the 2004 Bristol charity deck of trump cards...

'Orrible Murders

The David Lloyd bibliography (here) has a one line mention of a comic from September 1992 called 'Orrible Murders! The question is though...what is this comic? Until just the other day I had no idea what it was, the good news is that I'm much clearer about that...

Published by the Society for Strip Illustration as a limited edition (of 200) the issue I've picked up has been signed by a number of the creators involved - specifically David Lloyd, Nick Vince, Duncan Fegredo, Hilary Robinson, Dave King, Ian Ellery, Brad! Brooks and Roger Langridge...
Neil Gaiman's plot is set in Deathwatch manor and sees a number of characters attempting to survive 3 nights at the manor in order to inherit the estate of the recently deceased, eccentric millionaire owner, Silas Gore.

Here's the list of creators involved...

Here's Sean Phillips and Duncan Fegredo (whatever happened to them?) contribution...

Masters of comics signing today

This is today, don't forget! See some of you there?

Gosh comics have announced (here) that they'll be having a signing to celebrate the publication of Joel Meadows book 'Masters of comics'...
As it says on the website...

To celebrate the release of Joel Meadows’ new book Masters of Comics, we’ll be hosting a signing with three of the incredible artists profiled in the book: Laurence Campbell, Posy Simmonds and Sean Phillips will be here (along with Joel) on Saturday June 15th, 1-2pm!

Similar to his 2008 book Studio Space, Joel has spent time in the studios of some of the most celebrated talents in the comics business, taking photos and conducting interviews.
Readers are invited into the studio spaces of some of the most popular and prolific comic artists in the world. Through dynamic photography and exclusive interviews, Masters of Comics offers a rare, personal look at these artists' unique creative environments-spaces in which some of the greatest comics and graphic novels of the last fifty years took shape. Curated by Joel Meadows, editor of Tripwire Magazine, the book includes chapters on such legends as Milo Manara, Mike Kaluta, Walter Simonson, and more. The first in a series focusing on artists at work in a variety of mediums and industries, Masters of Comics offers a glimpse "behind the veil,"  shining new light on the artistic process, as well as providing a wonderful learning tool for aspiring artists wishing to learn from the greats.

Laurence Campbell, a former 2000AD contributor, is a long-time artist on the Mignolaverse titles, notably now bringing the long-running BPRD saga to its close.
Sean Phillips has carved out a place as one of the preeminent crime storytellers in comics, particularly in his collaborations with writer Ed Brubaker. The new series of Criminal has just recently launched.

Posy Simmonds is the pioneering British graphic novelist behind classics such as Gemma Bovery, Tamara Drewe and her newest title Cassandra Darke.
Laurence, Sean and Posy are all featured in the book and will be appearing with Joel to sign here on Saturday June 15th, 1-2pm!

If you can’t make it but would like something signed, drop us an email to info@goshlondon.com to arrange a reservation or mail order. Copies of Masters of Comics can be pre-ordered via our webstore.

Crisis magazine - spin-off titles to collect - part 1

I'm working my way through collecting Crisis magazine from back in the '90s and have realised that there were a number of dedicated spin-off comics from the magazine, so without further ado let's see what's out there to collect. Part 1 today, part 2 coming soon...

These are all traditional US comic sized, none to hand so don't know page length or which issues (from Crisis) are reprinted in each issue. To be updated when I can find these.

The collected story all in one big volume (c.240 pages)

Comics 2001 charity deack of cards - Hearts

It was comics creator Kev Sutherland who took the idea of people doing sketches for a convention and, instead of putting them in a convention brochure, put them into a deck of cards.

With hindsight I wish I'd got both the decks he produced (he did a second set in 2003) but I did get the 2001 edition - here are the hearts from that year...

Note that the 6 of hearts of is by Gary Spencer Millidge (but for some reason his signature didn't scan, hey-ho)
