On April 21, the eight-Tony Award-winning musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street premiered at DeLaMar. In this musical classic by legend Stephen Sondheim, you journey into Sweeney Todd’s dark world. During his quest for revenge, this barber meets Mrs. Lovett, a widow who just can't seem to sell her pies. Together, the two devise a murderous plan that could solve all their problems…

The role of Mrs. Lovett was portrayed by none other than Simone Kleinsma. She has already received much praise for her previous portrayal of this iconic role. “In 1993, I had the privilege of playing this special and challenging role for the first time. The fact that I get to sink my teeth into this brilliant music again 30 years later is, in addition to being a challenge, very special to me,” says Kleinsma.

Hans Peter Janssens took on the title role of Sweeney Todd as her co-star. He also previously portrayed this role. “To now be able to play this mysterious man alongside Simone is truly a bucket list moment,” says Janssens. The two lead actors are supported by an absolute top cast featuring well-known actors as well as new talent. The music and lyrics remain Sondheim’s brilliant original, but in this version, the musical takes place in the timeless setting of a prison: a special design for the main hall of DeLaMar, with the iconic red barber’s chair as the main centerpiece. In this way, this classic musical becomes a contemporary performance full of suspense, plot twists, and humor.
