Before I sat down to write this post I overheard a conversation going on between Jenna and Korinne as they were coloring. They were talking about what they wanted to be when they grew up. Jenna talked about being a girl soccer player, a teacher, or a Mom. I was standing by the girls when Korinne said, "I want to be what you are when I grow up." Flattered, I responded with, "Oh, you want to be like me?" She looked at me and said, "No, I want to be what SHE is when I grow up" pointing to Jenna. Moted. But then she said, "I want to be a Mom, (pause) but if that doesn't work out then I want to be an artist." Good to know, Korinne.
Adam had a big day this week.
He turned 34. (He had just taken off his hat when I took this picture) He was so busy with work and the Father and Sons campout that night that we weren't able to do much to celebrate. He asked for, and received, a blender and shoes. Really, you can't get more exciting than that which is why we didn't even try. My parents were in town for the night and participated in the fun/madness. Adam and Britton went to the Father and Sons campout for the dinner and fireside and then started for home when the rain started coming down around 9 p.m.. It was cold and rained steadily for the next 8 hours. They were glad they hadn't plannned on staying the night. Maybe next year. . .
This week Britton participated in the 2nd grade program, "Service Heroes" at school. There are five 2nd grade classes at the elementary school and all year long they have been doing service projects and learning about how service helps our communities. They started out the year by doing service in their own homes, then they raked the leaves at the school, visited an assistant living center to sing and visit residents, tied quilts to be donated to hospitals and other community programs, and put school kits together to sent to children in Haiti affected by the earthquake. They also had parents come in and share what they do for work that allows them to serve in the community.
Here they are ready for the program:
Britton is looking at my camera:
Here are just a few words from one of the song that they sang:
Together each boy and girl, we can make a better world
with a little prayer that you say,
with a little heart you gave away,
with a little laughter that you bring,
with a little song that you sing,
with a little tear that you cry,
and a little faith that you can fly,
Together each boy and girl, we can make a better world
It was really quite a touching program and they had a little video they put together that had pictures of all of the service projects they did throughout the year. In the first grade they focus on patriotism and then in the 2nd grade they move on to serving others and making a difference in the world through service. I'm a fan of their school and I really enjoy the programs they put together.
