Antiquis Malleum is one step closer!

Mick Leach shared these last night. What you can see are the master castings of Tim Prow's miniatures and the greens sculpted by Drew Williams.

Mick hopes to launch the Kickstarter for these (or whatever crowdfunder he chooses) in a matter of weeks.

I will keep you informed.

Antiquis Malleum: 21st Century Slomm and co!

I expect some of you old hands and Oldhammer history buffs will recognise the image above. Its Leaping Slomm Two Face, one of the chaos characters used to illustrate the mutation system in the First Citadel Compendium back in 1983 (I think!). This really was a forerunner of what would later be published in Slaves to Darkness, and several examples of the creatures that could be made with the system where provided. Slomm was one of them.

Like the other examples in that article, a series of limited release miniatures were produced to represent them, though sadly the Slomm example is now extremely rare - so rare I have never actually see another example save for this photograph and I believe that Steve 'Citadel Collector' Casey doesn't even own one!

Now that IS rare!

Later on, Citadel released a different version of Slomm, this one looking much more dynamic and aggressive than the first example - who to be honest, looked a little forlorn! This second example so fairly large scale production and can be picked up on eBay for about £15 or so these days.

Tim Prow, former 'Eavy Metal painter and Antiquis Malleum sculptor, had an example of this second model on his desk as he had long been a fan of the figure. So for no other reason that because he wanted to, and having a bit of spare time, he created his own 21st century version entitled rather provisionally 'The Son of Slomm'. Earlier on this week we shared a few teaser pictures of this model, but I am now happy to say that we can reveal the whole thing!

Here we go!

The Son of Slomm!

The model is multi-part and can be broken down as such into four pieces. Talking to Mick Leech, owner of Eastern Front Studios, he told me that he plans to do most likely produce a set of different heads and or weapons to further customise this model. So look out for more news there when we get it!

When I posted up the details of the other models, those of Matthias Witherheart and his warband, there was much talk of more close up images so that fans could have a look at the detail. Well, Tim has provided that too, and its here. One thing that is worthy of note though, is that this is only SOME of the miniatures that will be available (hopefully later this year) as many others are in the US and were sculpted by Drew Williams. So watch this space!

Oskar the Writhing, Matthias Witherheart and Gregror Sinblister built and ranked up. Don't worry, you don't have to use round bases!

Two of the beastmen that will soon see the like of day. There will be other models in this range too - with an emphasis on .non-goaty' beastmen.

A scale shot showing off the smaller miniatures alongside the snakemen. As with the Son of Slomm, hopefully we will see additional parts for the snakemen to help create additional figures.

The Son of Slomm figure alongside Oskar and Gregor. He is a good size, but should match the other larger creatures produced in metal during the 1980s.

Here we can compare the relative sizes of the snakeman champion and the proposed Son of Slomm model.

And finally, a shot of all of the models put together.

What do you think?

Antiquis Malleum Master Castings Have Arrived!

And here they are! The metal masters of the miniatures we have waited a long time to see. Designed by Tony Ackland, sculpted by Drew Williams and Tim Prow and put into production by Eastern Front Studios.

I really am looking forwards to painting these up!

Now, where is that Kickstarter?

Antiquis Malleum Is Coming....

Snakeman by Tim Prow
The Antiquis Malleum project has been quiet of late. If you need a reminder about the project, click on the labels below or follow the link here. But noises are starting to be heard once more. These noises suggest that master castings are only days away from delivery and Mick Leach is hoping for a winter launch.

Realm of Chaos 80s will continue to bring you news of these Third Edition inspired models as soon as we can.

Until then, what could these belong to?

Antiquis Malleum Snakeman by Tim Prow

I had heared some rumblings online about Mick Leach's Antiquis Malleum doing a snakeman model. I wasn't aware that there were any concepts for the piece and I am wondering if this model comes straight from the imagination of Tim Prow.

Now, if you haven't heard of the snakemen before, they were a range of Citadel models sculpted by (I think) Chaz Elliot in the mid '80s. Highly collectible today, that are occasionally criticised for their poor execution and high trade price online. I have owned two of these models in my time, and always found them rather charming, in a chunky sort of way. Still, you are looking at about £10 to get hold of a single model these days on eBay so the attraction must still be there.

As you can see from this WIP green, the modern snakemen are much more dynamic than their '80s cousins, yet there are plenty of subtle nods to the glory days of old: the chunky shoulder pads, the mail 'skirt' and that incredibly detailed shield. I am not quite sure what Tim plans to do with the brass rod, but be it axe, sword or spear this will be a striking model when complete that should delight any painter or collector who enjoys the 'Oldhammer' look of models.

The skulls around the torso of the model help cement the model amongst the other pieces produced by the project by Tim and Drew. Though, if I am honest a snakeman was the last type of model I was expecting to see come of of Eastern Front's forthcoming Kickstarter. This got me wondering what other delights will be heading our way soon, especially when you consider that both Tony Hough and Kev 'Goblinmaster' Adams are also connected to this exciting and growing miniatures project.

What are your thoughts on the snakeman? And also, what other races would you like Antiquis Malleum to produce? If there anything in particular that you would like to see made?

Antiquis Malleum Update: New Concepts and Greens

School is out! I have two weeks off ahead of me and I plan to do a LOT of painting, gaming and blogging in that time. A family holiday to Center Parcs in Suffolk provided the required R&R to get my mind focused on all things old school Citadel as well as a little bit of historical wargaming.

A quick update today. Tim Prow has finished the green to another beastman for the Antiquis Malleum range. Its the batfaced one from a few weeks back, while Anthony Ackland has produced a new concept of a rather hideously deformed mutant.

Thoughts, as always.

Antiquis Malleum: Another terriying beastman concept from Anthony Ackland

Mick Leach is very keen that you should see this today. This is Tony Ackland's latest beastman concept that he has been developing for us here in the Oldhammer Community. His latest offering is far more horrific than most, largely thanks to that spiderface though the additional arm isn't going to help this chap win any beauty pageants either!
It reminds me in many ways of the classic 'Spider Mutant' from Slaves to Darkness, brought so skilfully to life by Mortis some years ago in his memorable conversion.
I really like this concept and I feel that The Grandmaster of Chaos is beginning to get into his stride with this project. Over the last couple of months we have seen warriors, daemons and now hideously mutated beastmen emerge from his twisted imagination.
It makes be ponder (in trepidation) about what he will produce next!
What do you think about this latest concept? And those of you who have been contributing to the project by providing your thoughts and opinions, do you think the concepts are moving towards that hotchpotch of creatures that so many of you are hoping for?

Female Beastman Design for Antiquis Malleum: Opinions Sought

Over that past few weeks there has been much debate about the proposed Antiquis Malleum range being developed by Eastern Front Studios. Not so long ago I asked you to talk about your opinions on how a beastman range so look and the general consensus was to move away from the 'goatman' archetype and develop something more akin to early '80s mutants.

You would have seen Anthony Ackland's initial beastman concepts here and here and you will be no doubt familiar with Tim Prow's first sculpt here

But what about this?  A design for a female beastman!

What are your thoughts?

Antiquis Malleum: New Beastmen Concepts from Anthony Ackland!

A quick update on the behind the scenes work on Antiquis Malleum, Eastern Front Studio's upcoming retro inspired range of fantasy miniatures. The Grandmaster of Chaos himself, Anthony Ackland, has been busy working on the problem of mutated beastmen. Having played close attention to all the suggestions interested parties have made, he is beginning to produce a selection of concepts to illustrate beastman in their myriad forms.

Not just the goatheaded man type.

Here are two of his concepts. Have a look.

As before, feel free to make any comments or suggestions about the images I am sharing with you. Remember though, that these are concepts for miniature sculptors and NOT pieces of illustrative art.

I, for one, am looking forwards to getting my hands on some of these models in the not to distant future (hopefully)!

Antiquis Malleum Beastman Designs

Last post I shared with you the latest concept sketches from the workstation of the great Anthony Ackland. After a string of chaos warriors, it was the turn of the lowly beastman to see the Grandmaster of Chaos' twisted attentions. As I stated, the sketch represented the first in a series of similar models and your feedback was very constructive, so thank you. It seems that many of you prefer your beastmen 'non-goaty' to coin a term and I am please to report that Tim Prow has completed the first green. A green complete with old school style 'beastman armour!

This one could have stepped right out of Slaves to Darkness or Fantasy Warlord!

What do you think?

That shield is really impressive is it not? Hmm... Is it me, or could we have had our first view of the 'Visage of Malign'?

How do you like your beastmen? Antiquis Malleum proposes beastmen miniatures

Mick Leach has released one of the concept drawings by Anthony Ackland for a proposed set of beastmen figures for the upcoming Antiquis Malleum project. The emphasis on these designs has been a return to the beastmen of the early '80s that were more of a hotchpotch of different creatures rather than the ubiquitous goatman.

So what do you think? How would you like your beastmen?

Just before I go, I would just like to point out that these images are concept sketches for the miniature sculptor rather than illustrations for publication. Their purpose is to inspire the figure sculptor into producing something close to what the project managers are after. The dimensions of limbs, pose and other interpretations will be down to the chap who sculpts the model. After all, they often have the knowledge of what works best.

Thoughts please!

NEW Antiquis Malleum Greens by Drew Williams and more Ackland Concept Art

Great news this morning for those of you eager for more info about Eastern Front's Antiquis Malleum range of Oldhammer inspired miniatures. As you will have seen, Drew Williams (the other principle sculptor we have on the project, along with Tim Prow) has completed his first three greens. What do you think?

Additionally, more of Tony Ackland's concept art has oozed out babbling incoherently from the Realm of Chaos. Among them are the striking images of the proposed 'chaos steeds' that will, hopefully, be used to produce mounted versions of the figures above. And before you ask, there are plans afoot for armoured versions of these mounts too. As with the other models, these steeds will be scaled to the '80s Citadel range so if you are having difficulty finding chaos mounts for your old school models, these will prove to be rather useful.

Have a look at the ideas and tell us what you think.

The new concept for the lesser daemon of Malign. There is talk of developing the blades into pincers.

The new concept for the greater daemon of Malign.

A variant of the Chaos Steed idea for the initial run of Malign figures.

Another variant of the Chaos Steed.
As always, please comment below if you have a suggestion or opinion about what you have seen as your ideas really do help this project develop. Additionally, if you want to become more involved, pop along to the Oldhammer Community on Facebook and sign up. Mick Leach, owner of Eastern Front Studios, is a very active member and regularly posts ideas and WIPs that we don't share publicly.

NEW! Antiquis Malleum Greens by Tim Prow

Good morning Oldhammers!

Mick Leach has released some more greens from the Antiquis Malleum project so I thought I would share them with you here. These are two further models sculpted by Tim Prow and represent Gregor Sinblister and Oskar the Writhing. As you will know, your comments are extremely valuable to Mick, Tim and Drew, so don't hesitate to share your opinion below!

Additionally, if you want to know more about the background to these warriors of Malign just follow the link here.

Oh, and there are loads of comparison pictures of the whole range and their relative size to old school miniatures on the Oldhammer Blog, so don't forget to visit there when your done.

Gregor Sinlister: I love Tim's shield design, I suggested something similar to an old Anthony Ackland illustration and there were mumbles of 'it can't be done' about the image - well, Tim has pulled it off! Mick hopes to produce more shields in this style as a possible stretch goal on the kickstarter.
I have heard of eyes in the back of your head, but a skull on your back? Creepy!
Oskar the Writhing. Lovely detail on this one, especially those gribbly tentacles. This would make a good Nurgle alternative champion model too!
I like the allusion of the rib cage in this rear shot.

'Antiquis Malleum': Snaplimb Lusthowl: New Green Revealed by Eastern Front Studios!

Only a week or so after the release of Tim Prow's first green in the Antiquis Malleum project from Eastern Front miniatures comes the second sculpt in the series. This time its Snaplimb Lusthowl by Drew Williams from a design by Tony Ackland.

Influenced by the ethos and artwork behind the seminal Realm of Chaos Slaves to Darkness, this range hopes to produce further miniatures in the near future.

So, what do you guys think then?

Tony Ackland's 'Antiqus Malleum' Concepts from Eastern Front Miniatures: The Retinue of Matthias Witherheart Champion of Malign

With Tom Barbalet posting a review of Warhammer Visions and White Dwarf Weekly on Youtube (see his review here if you haven't seen it yet) I am sure that there are many of you in morning for the glory days of a good fluffy article. If you are anything like me, the monthly ritual of going into town on a Saturday morning to pick up the latest copy was the pleasure that you savoured, especially as you knew you had the entire weekend to pour over the magazine and soak up the meaty articles.

Sadly, this looks to be a thing of the past. The glossy 'Visions' is little more than a collection of souless photographs and 'miniature porn' I am sure that there are a great number of people out there who will no doubt enjoy this experience, but I won't be one of them and I doubt many of the readers of this blog will either.

So, with the help of Mick Leach of Eastern Front Studios and Tony Ackland, I have crafted this little article for your reading pleasure. What follows is my attempt to write a background for the series of miniature concepts that Tony produced for Antiquis Malleum and tie them in with the range of daemonic creatures being developed as we speak. Though these creatures will be inspired by the daemons from RoC, they will be entirely new creations and will need a new IP friendly name. We have come up with Malign as a possibility and the following article is used to begin to sketch out the background to this 'god' in hope that it inspires others to get painting, collecting, creating and gaming in some way.

Perhaps in the future I will get the chance to develop these characters further, and begin to develop scenarios and narratives in which they can exist, and this would be doubly favorable if a miniature line helped support them! For now, I hope you enjoy the narrative that I have constructed. As ever, please do chip in with your ideas and comments.

Enjoy.

So what of the Gods themselves?

It was argued by classical scholars that our deities are nothing more than a contraction of our own puny thoughts, our most primitive feelings and instinctive responses. That their power is sourced from the wellspring of powerful emotions, be they lonely melancholy, sudden, surging agony, deepest violence, or even the lustful passions themselves. In a sense, it seems that those early philosophers were more precise than later intellectuals gave them credit for. We now know that the dominant emotions exhibited by humanoid cultures seeped through the very fabric of existence, into dimensions unfathomably more ancient than our own. There, these raw psychic pulses amalgamated into 'warpforms' or 'interdimensonal entities' that advanced to such incredible power, that their wills could extend, however subtly, into our own plain of existence and in places, for a fleeting moment anyway, break down the very barriers between the worlds and inhabit our own. Of course, the autonomy of these beings, I dare not call them gods, waxed and waned as the varied humanoid cultures of our material plain began their upward spiral towards what we call civilisation. With darker, more violent gods ascendant during times of violence and strife, and those that favoured artistic expression, or compromise, rising to prominence during periods of peace, prosperity and cultural expansion. The titles that their worshippers bestowed upon them were manifold, but the sentient core remained unchanged, immune to the ravages of the eons and only susceptible the the whims of humanity's urges and traits.

Malign was different.

If collective thought, focused in a particular direction or empowered by a particular emotion, was responsible for the sentient forms that now rule over us, however insubstantially, then what brought forth the 'god' of parasitic destruction? The 'god' that feeds on that very fabric of congealed emotion itself? The truth was a brutal irony, for the source of the beetle headed god was not faith, nor even fear, but disbelief itself. That was Malign's paradox, for his power intensified during the so called 'Ages of Reason' or the more modern 'Enlightenment'. When the previously subservient cast down the centuries of conformity and began to question. The existence of ancient deities was for the first time in doubt. Temples were torn down. Books were burnt. There were pogroms and schisms and theological cleansings.

The age of the atheist dawned.

And where did those collective thoughts of disbelief surge? Those emotions that soared through the fabric of dimensional space so assertively, and with such arrogance? The logic of those so certain in their reasonings that 'gods' were mere illusions, props for the ignorant savage in his measly cave, or the obedient thrall bound in dogmatic fetters? The answer was simple, those puny thoughts, those arrogant assertions, they seeped between the barriers that preserve us from insanity and slowly consolidated into the sentient being that some call Malign.

The Parasite.

The God-Eater.

That was Malign's final irony. For here was the God of those who had denied the very existence of a higher power or powers. Who had laughed at the meek, faithful man or the beserk wallower in blood and death. Both deemed mindless and weak for not questioning the rule that pervaded every atom of their lives. This disbelief, this arrogant mockery, gave birth to Him and condemned a thousand million gods and goddesses to extinction.
Extract from 'The Wane of the Gods' by Hiedylmire XXIIV

Matthias Witherheart Champion of Malign

Of all the vocal non-believers that spout their rhetoric into the world, Malign's preferred slaves are forged from those who reek of hypocrisy.  Those who condemn the cultural constructs, or religious beliefs, of others for being feeble and backward, for lacking in logic, only to become no better than the bigoted ignorantthey berate. To some, these people are doubters, to others the atheists or even, when extreme enough in their views, agnostics. So secure are these fools in their own righteousness that they fail to feel the insideous tendrils of Malign coiling around their souls in their final, gasping moments. Great pleasure is found in Malign's servants when witnessing the realisation that a lifetimes' worth of scoff that there are 'no gods' is shattered by the unutterable visage of The God-Eater himself. These slaves are forced back out into the world to seek places where extreme forms of emotion dwell, namely dimensional entities or 'daemons' to give their primitive name, and to ensure their destruction and subsequent harvest for the God-Eater.

Matthias was one such self assured individual. An artist by trade and a man ever ready to spout his beliefs across the world, condemning those who dare give sermon, with a sermon of his own. Not seeing that his own art was but a pulpit of hypocrisy, his soul was claimed with great satisfaction upon the hour of his death. Forced by a will of unimaginable scale and power to search the surface of the world for the raw material of daemonic power, Matthias and his followers are drawn towards any disturbance in the fabric of existence. They live so they may slay the entities of other awesome powers, carving the daemonic substance from which such beasts are formed and burdened with the task of organising the consumption and removal of this substance back to Malign's twisted plain of reality.
Gregor Sinblister
Before the insectoid limbs of Malign closed around Gregor's soul, this fool of a man was a cynic of such appalling ingratitude that he cast out his own mother to further develop his political motives. Born into a rich and influential family in a northern city-state, Gregor was afforded every luxury his high birth allowed him. But privilidge was not enough, Gregor needed the raw stuff of influence to match the splendour of his possessions. In a world where oratory and intelligence were worth more than precious metals, any sign of intellectual impairment was deemed the ultimate disgrace. As the years caught up with his own mother, her mind began to wander and whispers could be heard that such behaviours were not uncommon in Gregor's House. His political opponents circled, casting barbed warnings about in high places about the suitability of a candidate who's closest living relative conversed with inanimate objects. Rather than face ridicule, Gregor ordered the exposure of his mother during one of the coldest nights of the year. Her frozen body was recovered days later and her death ruled a tragic accident. The self belief this concurred upon Gregor was strong enough to attract the attention of a daemonic servants of Malign and the soul of this matricide was doomed for eternity.

Gregor is the jealous second in command of Matthias' warband. Less favoured of their God's whims, Gregor has lived in the shadow of his master for two hundred and seventy-five years and it remains a shadow he would be keen to step out of. Without divine intervention, such an act would be impossible, for Matthias is twice the warrior, and Malign finds his slave's bitter frustrations a great amusement, one he is keen to preserve indefinitely.
Snaplimb Lusthowl
Not all the servants of Malign are drawn from those souls deemed foolish enough to attract the attention of The Parasite. Others come willingly. One such slave was the man who would become Snaplimb Lusthowl. His birth name is now long forgotten, and he exists only to serve the god he once denied. Exposure to the warping influence of dimensional barriers has caused parts of Lusthowl's body to twist into a poor reflection of his master's visage. Antennae like growths have spurted from his head, his eyes have begun to bloat and bulge like those of a spider while his arm has split into a cleaving appendage ideal for the butchering of daemonic creatures. Snaplimb thinks of little but the need to appease his god and attract the attention of his master for even the most fleeting of moments.
Moritz Flaytooth
Moritz is close to achieving the nirvana of Lusthowl. Little of his original personality remains, save for a few crazed recollections of his time amongst the ranks of a town militia. These martial remains have proven useful to the aims of Malign, and Moritz has caught the attention of the God-Eater on more than one occasion. Gifted with a Face of Malign, Flaytooth's head is slowly transforming into a fleshless skull, resplendent with two twitching, antennae like horns. Command is not to be the fate for Moritz, his mind is too deranged for tactical thought, but he serves his master faithfully and wants only to kill and be killed in Malign's ever hungry service.

Udo Warpbeetle
Ambition cursed Udo, and that ambition continues to drive this servant of Malign to the present day. Though blessed by a Gift of the God-Eater, Udo remains locked out of the decision making in the warband, though this set back does little to limit his dreams of power. He is certain that one day he will replace Gregor as second in command and this will eventually lead to Udo contesting leadership with Matthias himself. For now, Udo is willing to bide his time and watch, seeking only to better himself in the eyes of his Patron until the day dawns for him to take his rightful place as the head of the warband.

Oskar the Writhing
Oskar is different to the other warriors in the warband as he originally served another Dark Power. Crippled by a period of self doubt, Oskar found himself doubting the attentions of his chosen Power and Malign, ever willing to exploit such an emotion, chittered his seductive promises into this warrior's weakened ears. Abandoning his long held beliefs, Oskar embraced Malign wholeheartedly, murdering his fellows in the thick of battle and dedicating their daemonically tainted corpses to The Parasite. Oskar now lives to serve. He leaves the thinking to others within the warband and focuses on prowess in battle. His successes have seen him rewarded but such high favor has had unforeseen consequences, as Gregor is deeply envious of Malign's attentions and wrongly assumes that Oskar is the greatest threat to his position.

Gotfreid Soulshiver
Depraved, twisted and despising company of any sort, Gotfreid serves as the warband's scout. He roams before the warband, revelling in his isolation and independence, tasked with leaving signs for the slower moving warriors to follow. Gotfreid is particularly suited to daemon hunting and once a location has been unearthed that may present with daemonic flesh to harvest, the Soulshiver sends out psychic thought patterns that attracts the mortal followers of Malign in their scores. Unsurprisingly, Matthias prefers to keep as close as possible to Gotreid's trail to ensure that he is first on the scene of any potential harvest.
Bloateye Stagstalk

A step away from spawnhood, Stagstalk is Matthias' personal favourite and the champion hopes to unlock secret messages from his Patron in his pet's wild gibberings. Little more than a beast, Stagstalk indulges the only pleasures remaining to him, the wild joy of open battle and pleasing his master's every whim.
