Ride of the Sabre

Here's another fantastic miniature from Albino Raven miniatures.  There is a wide variety of genres covered in the line... everything from fantasy miniatures to modern era soldiers, as well as larger and smaller scale figures.

Here's a link to the website:

There was certainly a lot of action going on with this figure, and a lot of dramatic lights and darks to enhance that look.

The base is constructed from tree bark and branches as usual.  I really love how such simple materials can make something so realistic and dramatic!

I had to be sure that the warm tan colors of the sabertooth didn't get lost in all the natural tones of the wooden surfaces, so those were a bit more saturated than those background colors.  The rider was painted with the most blueish-gray tones to make him stand out.

Once again, an instance of controlling contrast mostly through the brightness or purity of color, instead of basic light vs dark contrasts.

Dinos on Dragons!

This is something quite wonderful from Albino Raven miniatures.  This Wyvern figure amazed me from the moment I saw it on the website.  Even then, I imagined it as a possible Rhinosaur mount for my Kings of War Salamander army.

Obviously, the rider is a cold one cavalry saurus.  It shocked me at how well it fit, and how easy he was to convert!

I primed both figures an off white to illustrate just how well they do mesh.  Four of these will comprise my heavy cavalry Rhinosaur unit.

Since the theme for the Salamanders is the "Army of Ash", I wanted to have as many fire breathing dragons as possible.  The army already has Fire Drakes and Ember sprites, and this seemed to be the icing on the very hot cake!!

The positions of the wings should make it pretty easy to fit all four of them on the movement tray.

The original Wyvern figure has an orc rider.  Check out the website to see the original version...

Snow Bound

Here we have a larger scale figure from Albino Raven Miniatures, loaded with detail as usual :-)

It was very easy to get all kinds of interesting subtle color transitions in the darker areas, as those were very carefully sculpted and finely rendered,

The penny is for scale (he's on a 50mm base)

Now for some close ups!!

The Raven in the Forest

Before I posted the finished images of this figure from Albino Raven Miniatures, I thought you might like to see the base in its raw form.

He is a 54mm figure, with all the details you would expect from ARM.  Such details make a painter's life easier, and that is always fun!

There are many articles on the blog showing how I create the "Bark 'n Branch" bases.  Larger figures such as this one are a interesting to create, as I have enough space to add the larger branches, and utilize the smaller branches to get that forest look.

These are also bargain basement cheap materials as well... as in mostly free.    Grab branches and bark that's sitting there on the ground... pieces of mulch, all kinds of goodies!  Stay tuned for the finished pictures!!

Don't curse the Raven

The these wee hours of the morning, we have something from Albino Raven Miniatures!  This ork figure is one of many very unique and diverse designs they have created.

Here's a link to the facebook page, which will show you some of the newest creations that are under way:

I had a lot of fun painting this guy!  The figures are cast in very solid resin, with not a lot of tiny pieces to worry about.  There was a sculpted base that came with the figure, but I wanted to make a different base for him.

Check out their webstore to see the kind of variety that I'm talking about.  There are sci-fi and fantasy figures of various scales.  I am working on more of these figures, as well as a fun conversion project!  So, as always, stay tuned!!
