Gaslands and Briscon

I was in Brisbane last weekend, and realised to my good fortune that Briscon was happening. In the nightmare petrol-guzzling dystopian mire maze that was the carpark, I received good preparation for a Gaslands Refuelled particiption game. Ross Williams ran this as well as made all the scenery and cars. The tyre piles are sliced Nerf rounds.

Buggy with rocket turret and shotgun

Car with turreted machine guns and napalm dropper

The course. Ross proudly told us that noone had made it to the second gate.

Start your engines!

We race to the first gate, which activates weapons.

I veer infront of the buggy and drop a molotov accurately on it

Mayhem! I dodge a rocket; napalm is dumped and the buggy crashes into the other car

Both my opponents blow up, I try to squeeze through the eye of the needle
and we called the game. Great fun!

Other participation games I saw included Lion Rampant crusades and Wings of Glory. There was an impressive 15mm Johnny Reb display game of Gettysburg, but it lacked any explanation or crowd-wranglers. I'm getting crotchetty.

There were a few tournaments going on, including Armada (Star Wars and Mantic), Battletech, Bolt Action, DBA, Team Yankee, 9th Age, Kings of War, Star Wars Legion, and One Page Rules' Grimdark Future.

I had a good time at the bring & buy stand, including an absolute bargain on OOP Forgeworld renegade milita and metal Catachans.

CanCon 2022

After a pandemic hiatus, CanCon was back for 2022. It suffered from dealer and participant uncertainty, not to mention not enjoying a public holiday long weekend, and was reduced in size. However, it still felt and looked like CanCon and there were a few new traders. It wasn't as blisteringly hot as previous years, either.

Entry was (cheaply) ticketed for the first time, to allow for venue capacity limits and attendance tracking with QR codes. Masks were compulsory. The second hand stall wasn't as mosh-pit-like as usual due to this, which was great!

I didn't grab a lot of photos, but concentrated on scenery which grabbed my attention. The system which was booming was Star Wars: Legion.

There was a bit of Bolt Action as well.

Battlefield Accessories continue to reinvent themselves with photo-realistic pre-printed MDF. They also have backdrops you can see in these photos.

There was a participation game which I think was the 1941 Battle of Fallujah, with the British Habbaniya Brigade (including Gurkhas) having to capture and hold a bridge from the Iraqis.

My loot: A few impulse buys and second hand bargains.

CanCon 2020

I went down to CanCon last weekend, and I'll put up a couple more blog posts this week about what I did down there. I've been a bit busy otherwise, so the blog has suffered. Similarly, we didn't organise a Bloggers' Catch-Up this year, which was unfortunate. I did, nevertheless, manage to chat with  fellow Analogue Challengers Paul of the Man Cave and Slowpainter John.

I only took a few photos this year of some participation and demo games which caught my eye:

Wings of Glory. There were Tripods as well!

Here's my swag: a mix of boardgames, paint, scenery, and new and second-hand figures!

CanCon 2019

I made the trip to CanCon this year. Due to circumstances over which I have no self-control, I missed out on a seat at the Blood Bowl tournament so instead spent time perusing the trade stands and catching up with friends. It was stinking hot...

We had the 2019 Bloggers and Challengers' Catch-up, and it was great to see old mates and put faces to cyber-acquaintances.

I only took a few photos- the highlight for me was some gorgeous jungle terrain being used for some Two Fat Lardies games. I haven't seen anything so realistic.

Here's my loot- I got some cheap stuff at the bring & buy (brand new 40K 8th edition, it was only $40, they made me buy it) and a bit of MDF, and some hobby supplies.

CanCon 2018 Part 2: Pictures, loot, friends

This was the 40th CanCon. CanCon has now spread to a third hall, which meant things weren't as packed as previous years. There were more food vendors, which was a relief.

Most importantly, we had the Aussie Wargames Bloggers meet-up, where numbers were down compared to previous years. Millsy, Kaptain Kobold and myself caught up for a photo during the day and later we all went out for dinner with friends on Saturday night at the Ducks Nuts.

Being busy coaching Blood Bowl, I didn't get a leisurely look around. Here's some pics of demo games I saw:

I picked up some goodies from Slave 2 Gaming. My eye was also caught by their 18mm Teddysburg ACW range, and some lovely 54mm WW1 figures.

I took a number of photos of scenery that caught my eye. Many of these are not in-progress games.

I missed taking photos of a very impressive 6mm Team Yankee game based on the Soviets doing an amphibious invasion of the Jutland Peninsula, with some monstrous air cushion landers.

I was walking past the Age of Sigmar tables when they had their armies on display:

The second hand stall was in a much larger area this year, but I didn't pick anything up.

I did buy a few boardgames, particularly some escape room and puzzle games which I've enjoyed with The Skirt Swisher previously.
